Title: Passing in the morning
Post by: Kadri on June 02, 2012, 01:34:41 AM
Just wondering how many of us feel passable in the morning after waking up (before makeup), and how long it took to get that way? I was passable in the street before I started hormones, but have looked indisputably male in the morning until fairly recently.

I suppose voice should be included as an element of passability. I tend to get down to a croakier, male-like voice in the morning until I remember to crank it back up to the right level.

In the last few weeks I've noticed that I stopped getting too depressed about what I look like in the morning, because something is beginning to shift.... it's nice.

You tell me! :P
For me it was about... 6-8 months I think? When I caught my reflection in the mirror and I didn't see a guy standing there.
And my voice is.. well, my voice. my natural voice is apparently quite passable. No training at all. It's just a lot softer in the morning when I'm half asleep.

I live alone at the moment, so I don't have to worry what a partner thinks I look like when I wake.
As I am a confirmed Lipstick Lesbian I won't leave the house without my mascara and lippy properly done.  I will admit I can live without the rest of the makeup.

Karen.

Hair aside, I think fairly OK. Nevertheless, I still feel naked without a little makeup

That must be really nice! I have a feeling my voice will be one of the more difficult hurdles to overcome in my transition, so small favors like these are certainly a blessing.

You'll get there! I was just really lucky with what nature gave me. I don't hear what others hear in my voice so I constantly worry about how I sound, despite passing vocally. I just got off the phone with a stranger and got called ma'am no problem. And I had been asleep.

My hair actually looks better in the morn,

it's so darn straight in the day time but when I get up its wavy and messy...I've seen girls pay big money to get the same look, lol

I don't really wear make up but I always make sure my skin is completely clear and moisturized. When I've answered the door to the postman (mailman) in the morning I'm just out of my bed and in my nightdress. Postman or delivery drivers often call me dear or darling, so it's not a problem.

I hate wearing make up and think I look worse with make up on.

Do you want my honest opinion? you have too much designer stubble and your eyebrows are too bushy! if you had laser to take away your beard growth (seen on both of your pictures) and plucked your eyebrows you would look more convincing.

Well at $350 a pop, a family of 5 to feed and working 7 days a week, I'm having to slowly save for the hair removal. Eyebrows I was going to work on tonight actually. But thank you. ^_^

I find that a camera flash actually makes me look worse, so I'm not going to be brave like Keaira and post one of my morning ones up there...I have permanent dark circles under my eyes which grow and shrink but never disappear altogether.

Also, even though all of my dark facial hair was lasered off, there is still a good crop of slow-growing blond hairs that needs to be attended to in the morning.

I would imagine your not Full Time yet? but we all have to pay for our laser and other treatments and transitioning is expensive. I would have thought laser would be your first port of call even before clothes etc.

Actually I am. And between the fact that I dont have an adams apple, my height and voice, I consistently get gendered correctly outside of work. Which surprised me. At work is a different matter because all the bigots there still remember when I was "That cute Johhny Depp-looking guy who changes molds.".
Title: Re: Passing in the morning
Post by: ZDR on June 03, 2012, 05:32:31 AM
It all depends on how I'm dressed (or not dressed ;D) when I wake up. I was lucky that my only facial hair is on my upper lip, I'll get around to zapping it later, but I can't afford it right now. Anyway, I feel that not ever having 5 o'clock shadow plays a part in my passability in the mornings. That, or that my hair is permanently in a high pony-tail which isn't what you'd call masculine.

Even in that groggy state, Keaira, I wouldn't say you looked like a guy. A butch woman, sure. But not a guy.

I don't have an adams apple either and my voice didn't break either but the first thing I noticed with all of your pictures was the large amount of facial hair you have.

Sorry but I thought Keaira looked like a regular unshaven guy in the white vest pic, a bit like one of the guys in a band like the Black Crowes!

5' 5" is a really good height and is an average height for a female over here in the U.K. I'm a little taller at 5' 7".

The Black Crowes are a band from the late 1980's and 1990's and still going strong today: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Crowes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Crowes)

I think once you work on removing that facial hair and trimming the eyebrows and maybe getting some highlights in your hair you will notice a lot of difference.

By the way your still wearing the same vest in the top pic and the recent one you posted!

Title: Re: Passing in the morning
Post by: Keaira on June 03, 2012, 12:27:12 PM
I am not! That is a different vest. And I am well aware of what I am wearing, why do you think I posted that particular one? :P
And I'm not doing highlights. I had red hair which I loved, but people said it brought out too much red in my skin. So I'm staying with my natural black.

BTW, I too am British. Here in the US, Males tend to be a lot taller. Which helps me blend in even more, whether I'm in uniform or my PJ's.

Also the updated, just woke up picture.

My morning look is my everyday look, hair aside (and even then, my hair is often good enough when I wake up). I don't wear makeup anymore, as I'm too lazy to buy any, and even if I weren't... makeup is very unnatural and gross and chemical. Furthermore, I don't find that I benefit from it all that much, aside from my dark circles - which, even with makeup, are very difficult to conceal anyway. Aside from my nose, my facial skin is very soft and smooth-looking.

Perhaps I should have those under-eye veins minimized sometime... I have clearly cried too intensely, and too much.

 Hm.

I don't move around much in my sleep, I guess, and my hair is hardly average. I have never seen my hair resemble that before, though... I have had a few times where I wake up with perfectly styled hair, even.

Makes up for the disasterous hair days that I can have, like today. My curls decided to riot.

Here's a woke-up-like-this with my nasty waves: http://imgur.com/drLbv (http://imgur.com/drLbv)

Some like my waves, but they are very irritating in my opinion. However, I prefer shorter hair in general... long hair is tedious and inconvenient.

It's a bit older, but it applies. Like, March old. In any case, I try to look neater... like in this pic (one of the few pics I like of myself): http://imgur.com/Hlwhc (http://imgur.com/Hlwhc)

You can't look hideous when you're living true to yourself. It's not possible. The true beauty of a person shines from inside, from behind their eyes. And that's apparent even when they've just woken up. To me, anyways. :)

Well done for taking the challenge. :P

Stepping out our comfort zone is how we take that first step from hiding in the house to the open world after all. I just happen to be reckless enough to try to do things first. Oh btw, I hope you like my new avatar. ^_^

Hiding in the house? what do you mean by that Keaira? I transitioned 15 years ago! no hiding around here!

Nice pic Vanna Siamese! but it doesn't look like you've just crawled out of your bed!

Oooh, that's right, EVERYONE here in the US has a spare $300 dollars or so just laying around. While I'm at it I'll just put SRS on layaway. I mean, silly me, I shouldn't spend all my money on things for my family or a roof over our heads. I'm just blowing money like it's going out of style.

Honestly I think laser is more important than clothes and makeup, maybe even more important than HRT. This facial hair kills my self confidence when it's at that awkward length where I can't quite cover it all up, and can't quite shave it off. Plus those scars and skin irritation caused by shaving don't help either :(

Yeah you can cover it, but if someone gets close enough to your face, they can tell. Plus if someone is making out with you, they're gonna feel that stubble or roughness. Not cool!!!

BTW I'm not coming down on anybody, so please don't get defensive...

Kudos to keira for having the confidence and guts to go full time. Every pic I see shows improvement too.

I've seen ciswomen who have thicker and darker facial hair than I had pre-HRT.
Sure, I want to get rid of this crap as much as any woman. But I don't let it hold me back in living my life. And the first time I went and had laser hair removal, it was only $90 a session.
That's a huge jump in price to get to $300.

But you can go though and have all the FFS done, laser hair removal, SRS, the works and still be clocked. So holding others to their own standards when they don't even know that person is no better than being judged less than a woman by a ciswoman. I know that one thing I am tired of is having to fight for everything in my life. But I will never roll over and give up. I went full time after 3 months on HRT btw
-shrugs-

That's about the same as I spend on laser per session (£150.00 U.K money) and I don't have much money. I also drive 70 miles round trip (so there's a fuel cost on top) but it's the best place I've been to for laser.

For me personally laser was very important and getting rid of any traces of facial hair is also very important, especially being out everyday and people seeing you at close quarters.  For me these priorities were and still are way in front of procedures like SRS.

Some of the folks where I live pass in the morning, but the police investigators and the morgue usually have it all tidied up by the afternoon  :-\

Laser hair removal was a lower priority to my name usage at work problem. Now that that is taken care of, I can use the money I was saving for court fees towards hair removal. Besides, I deserve the right to look like hell in the morning.  so neh :P
