I thought this was very interesting.
I absolutely loved the book. It holds so much meaning for me. When I reflect on it it makes me :'(
I remember the movie. Roberta gave me hope. Even though John Lithgow is not trans. To see a character on the screen who was never 'passable" helped me immensely.

Yes, thanks for posting. I loved Garp (except the last 3 minutes) and I liked Lithgow's performance way better than Felicity Huffman in TransAmerica, who, despite all her efforts, couldn't succeed in convincing me she had ever been male-bodied. I know why they did that - to underscore that her character WAS a woman, not a man pretending, but it just couldn't bring me there.
