Just sharing!! I bought some lovely purple polish and a real neat blue/purple flip polish and some clear for my hands! I'm quite pleased!! I went in and just did it. No shame!<3 my toes look lovely...though I did have a liiitle application trouble, they turned out ok! is there a way to get super smooth application?
Love and kisses <3 Zoey
Wow, congrats! That's a big first step into the open!
Smooth finish...start with freshly washed hands...apply a base coat...apply the color (better to have 2 light layers, than 1 heavy/thick one)...apply top coat.
Key tip: Try to get it right on the first pass, at most on the second pass. If you start "scrubbing" the polish on (especially if it's to smoothen out a rough spot in the polish), it will have gotten tacky and will totally FUBAR your polish.
Another tip: Allow at least a few minutes between the clear coats and the color. I apply one coat to one hand, then apply the first coat of color to the other, and by then the first hand is ready for the second coat. (I do take my time when applying, no splashing/scrubbing of the brush).
Then, DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERTIPS FOR ANYTHING for at least one-two hours. I'm told you can run ice-cold water over the nails and it'll "set" the polish, but once you start using your fingers again you'll forget how soft the polish is when it's not yet "dry".
Again, congrats on the purchase!!
Thank You! ! I'll try that next time i apply! My heart was pounding the whole time hehe! <3
I feel so lovely right now!

:)
Painted nails are a "must-have" for me too!

Painted toenails make me feel sexy, painted fingernails make me feel beautiful!
I so agree! Just wish i could match my nails too but life won't let me currently
*sigh*

You can get a professional spray that is used to set the polish. You can find it at Sally's Beauty Supply. And best of all, you don't need to be a professional. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsmileys.on-my-web.com%2Frepository%2FAnimals%2Fferret-3.gif&hash=f49e2f86761323f2abd9c33941920389dbb3b10f)
Also you can use a Q-tip and a little remover to clean up around the nails for that finished look.
Hmm! Might look into that! Just feels lovely in general though!

That's HUGE Joey!! Congrats!!
I remember being terrified the first time I bought some femme stuff, but it gets easier and easier each time you do it.
Be mentally prepared for that moment when a cashier tries to embarrass you by holding up your item in front of the whole line and asks "Is this yours, SIR?"; i've found that will eventually happen and a quippy comeback silences them.
Thanks so much! ! What was your response? :-*

Heard in an ambulance: "Cancel the Code 12, that transgendered girl is back on her feet again." Hugs, Devlyn
:D hugs <3 today was Good! Let's hope for tomorrow to be Just as good

See...its not all that bad :)
I have been buying nail polish for years and using it to touch up art projects, so me going in the store in "boy mode" to buy polish is really no big deal, in fact its easy to go dress and top shopping in boy mode as well, I have always bought clothes as gifts for my girls and sister, just keep your head high and be proud of who you are :)
I'm getting better at that!! Thank you all for the support! I actually feel like i belong somewhere <3 love and hugs <3

Giving people a place where they belong, just another service we offer! Hugs, Devlyn
I got polish for the first time last month, I think. Terrified, of course, I spent days trying to come up with some reason to justify it in case someone questioned me- I decided I was going to use it to fix some scratches on my bike if someone asked. So I stood in front of the display trying to find a good color, nervous and sweating, until I found a red, then grabbed a snack to distract the teller.
A few weeks later I went in to another store (I don't want people to recognise me) and got some pink- still nervous, because touching up my sister's bike seemed less believable, and trying to find a good shade I liked. I felt less nervous that time, though.
I do see it becoming easier each time, though.
I haven't had anyone ask me what I was buying it for yet they just get a weird look on their face. This just makes me laugh to myself.
Best thing I've used so far for those odd looks is a simple smile, and have a gleam in your eye.
Let them think whatever they want, at least we have fun with it.
Lol Beth, I love doing that ;)
Yea I just smile and have fun with it.
You can get some really cheap wild shine clear nail protector and add a really thick coat of that once the color is all dried. It makes it nice and smooth, and it's only $2ish
Hi switchZoEy,
Be proud for yourself! I am happy for you achieving your first small step that is for you a big step. I meant to mention in your trouble post about make up, that purchasing a feminine item in male mode in a store, all that matters to a sales person is making the sale, it matters not who you are. It isn't their business to know who the item is for. It could be for a family member. I do remember buying a bikini top in a sporting goods store and a young sales lady said, "this isn't for you?" I said, "no," and we both laughed. Don't sweat it, most of my experience has been serious business transaction and it can be fun. Sometimes you have positive comments from female staff, "saying this is so pretty, I didn't know we had that, I think I will get one for myself." All my female purchases have been in male mode.
Enjoy.
Jamie
I did give the lady a little grin. I couldn't help myself! I'll most definitiatly put a clear coat over them when I get a chance!!! :-* i think I could totally do that again sometime lol

It's mostly attitude now, but before i was confident in purchasing femme things found it helpful to have an excuse ready to avoid the deer in the headlights/stumbling words scenario - the excuse was for me, not the cashier. I have
every right (as do you) to purchase anything in the store without getting questions from the cashier. Still, i've run across some cashiers that just can't help trying to embarrass me. Young female cashiers or cashiers from another country seem to be the worst at doing that. Guys may give you a look but otherwise don't seem to care.
Some comebacks that i had in mind:
Yes, it's mine (said with a big smile, leave 'em wondering)
It's for my wife (while pointing at my wedding ring, an imaginary wife or girlfriend will do if you don't have a real one)
Do i LOOK like someone that would wear this? (said aggressively)
Is there a problem here?
and so on.
If a cashier is being really obnoxious you can always complain to the management. It's not their place to pass judgement on you.
Eventually you'll find that you are confident enough to just buy whatever you want and damn the torpedoes.
Hehe! Awesome! ! ;D

I find something that helps with the application is to smooth your nails off with an abrasive- such as a non-metallic nail file or 400 grit wet&dry, then you get a nice smooth base to apply varnish to.
You can actually get a "polished " look without varnish by then using a 1200/1600 grit and then a cutting compound such as T-cut. ( I've spent way too long around cars)
Hehe!! I'll keep that in mind too!!! :-*

Here forest green manicure is popular. I am not quite sure whether I can try it.
I prefer very simple manicure. I once tried French manicure, but it was too tricky and I gave up. Nowadays I do not wear nail polish, but I have a blue manicure. My little daughter sometimes plays with it and tries to apply it to my nails.
Some of my toenails become black as I run outdoors regularly. I am thinking applying the blue manicure to my toenails to hide the dark toenails during this summer.

Very nice. I still remember the first time I went and got some makeup by myself. :)
I will say that I work a day or two a week at a larger retailer as a cashier and the amount of men coming through by themselves purchasing polish and/or makeup is much larger than I would've expected. I'm sure *part* of them are honestly purchasing it for their wife/girlfriend/daughter/SO/whatever, but I strongly doubt that all of them are. It's definitely more common that most people would probably think.
And there is something very nice about looking down at a polished set of toes. :)
Madison
There really is something wonderful about that! ! I just ordered some beautiful sparkling red polish...my toes are going to look like Dorthy's shoes in the wizard of oz :D I can't wait!

Go get a pedicure and manicure. It feels great.
You are paying them for a service they offer.
Every other woman in there is expecting and not even thinking about that she will not be treated with respect.
It is quite easy. Truth.
No one really cares except you. Your fear drives you. Forget it.
Head up. chest out, nice smile and be polite.
Next thing you know is that you are in shock and not scared anymore.
Tomorrow is even better.
Hugs
Cindy
Ooh that does sound lovely! I just may treat myself :)

I had my first nail polish moment last month too. was ready to say "im trans gender and its OK for us to use nail polish" but not even any eye contact from the clerk. I did white crackle on a clear base coat. since i have a lot of white in my nails i thought it would look natural.

My wearing blue manicure about 7 years ago: http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/barbie_pictures/fashion/blue20050704.jpg (http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/barbie_pictures/fashion/blue20050704.jpg)
I may try it to conceal my ugly toenails this summer.

Ooh! Awesome shade Barbie! ;D

Gourgous Barbie.. :D
Smooth finish is partly a product of smooth nails, if you have ridges, buff them out a bit!
Today I applied blue manicure to my ugly toenails. It took just 5 minutes.

Hee! I love it!! ;Heel
Nice shade of blue. I notice that you dont do your finger nails either. i did it a few times and it seemed to send the message "treat me different" but most folks dont know how to treat you different, become frightened and push you away sometimes nastily. I buff and clear coat my fingers and if anyone thinks it strange i say "i use it for my splitting nails" and if commented on my toes "In yoga, We celebrate or feet" which are both true. :D
Thanks, Joann!
So far, only person complaining about my toenails is my little daugter. She scolded me like "Are you a man or a woman? You should not wear manicure" I replied "You can not wear it, but I can." Actually she wanted to wear that manicure, but my wife did not allow it.
Barbie~~
Aw, still a lovely shade though!! :-*
