Title: Passing...
Post by: Jack12 on April 09, 2007, 02:14:34 PM
Do you find it's easy or hard to pass?
Do you think I pass?
I'm open for any advice.

Do I think it's easy to pass as male? Yes.
Do I think it's easy to pass as a nearly 18 year old male? Not really. But I think most FTMs tend to have that problem.

I think you pass, yeah.

I think the problem with passing is not necessarily appearances- looking male is not too difficult, if not androgynous. It's acting appropriately male that I find difficult because I haven't been socialized as such. Plus there's the voice factor.

And yes Jack- in all appearances, you pass wonderfully!

You asked, so my opinion is that you pass 90%.  You know what makes you impassable?  the frown on your face!  without the frown you are very cute.  ;)

Passing is a pain in the ass sometimes. By that I mean I end up suffocating myself before I go out the door. Other than that, I'm good. I was blessed with a naturally deep voice that sounds male if I deepen it a bit. I was out with some friends (two of which knew I was trans) and a third person came over who didn't know of my trans status, they assumed I was a normal male until something was said (a comment about me having no balls lawl). They were cool with it though, didn't seem ignorant like most people I encounter who find out about me. Even asked me if I wanted to come to their GSA this Wednesday :)

And yes :) You pass. Its not too hard to pass. Just have a confident attitude and people won't suspect a thing.

I agree with the rest, it's more in how you carry yourself. Yeah if you're suuuuuuuuper feminine looking it's going to be a little harder to "pass". But if you feel male on the inside, it's going to show on the outside.

I'm with ya Zombie. Except now I guess I'm used to breathing with tighter lungs lol. I notice even after I unbind at night, I still breath the same as if I was binding, because I"m so used to it. Another thing about " deepening" your voice, try not to do it unless you got it down flat, otherwise people can tell you're "trying" to talk lower. I know a lot of bio males with higher voices than me, talk comfortably and you'll be fine.

And tell your friends that accept you to stop busting you out like that. It's not their place to be telling others about you.

I dont know if this will help you guys any.... but maby the reverse of learning a female voice will work for you....
Im allways telling M2F's that are new to this that pitch has nothing to do with sounding male or female... its all in the harmonics of the voice and inflection of tone....
Women speak from up high... sometimes whats called a head voice
Men speak from down low, or chest voice....  my guy voice made my chest vibrate half the time... yet I had a "higher" natural voice.... <I learned to make it go down too so people wouldnt pick on me about sounding like a girl pre transition>

Also the technique I use for the harmonics is to speak and feel the voice box... top and bottom... a females voice box mainly vibrates at the bottom with verry little up top, where as a guys voice vibrates both equaly...  I learned to make it mainly vibrate on the bottom... but maby you all could find a way to go the otherway and yeah... Im kinda rambeling....  anyways once you guys are on T there going to be no mistakeing and your not going to have to worry about voice.... ittle come naturaly...
after that its just tone inflection... speak forcefuly and in a semi monotone like a guy and thats all that youd reallly need LoL...

Hello Jack,
I think you definately pass. I also agree with everyone else to that most of it is in your attitude. I think most of the time if someone suspects something is up, they would think I was just a feminine male or gay. Try  not to worry too much about what other people are thinking...YOU KNOW who and what you are and that is all that really matters. Just continue moving forward to be the best you that you can be (regardless of any issues) Everybody has some kind of hang up...ours is just a lot different than most people's.

Yep, from photos you guys all pass. The T will change the voice and make the face even more masculine for those who aren't on it. And you're all, even the guys not on T, pretty masculine looking. Confidence in who you are will help movement and gestures look natural.

I think you pass.

I guess I pass -- it can be hard at times. I'll get called ma'am for an entire month and then get one "sir" comment, which makes things really hard for the rest of the day. I'm learning not to let it affect me so much and not worry what other people think -- after all, I'm doing this for me, not for other people, so who cares what they think.

But I heard often "Mister" too! :)
