I'm not sure if any of you have small wrists and this, but it's worth a shot.
I broke my last watch stupidly by putting it through the washing machine (although it worked for two weeks after that before dying so I'm not sure if that's the reason) and now really need a new watch. As there are no shops around here short of about an hours drive I'm looking to buy one online, but I have no idea how to find one that's likely to fit without looking stupidly big or one that's obviously a kids watch.
Where do you guys get watches (if you wear them)? And how big are "mens standard size" straps?
My wife bought my watch. It has links in it so we could take links out to fit my wrist. She compared the watches and found one with the smallest face so it wouldn't look large on me.
My wrists are small at 7 inches.
Big watches are in. The biggest I have is 40 mm, with my wrists I wouldn't go bigger.
Men's watches are generally between 34mm-50mm.
And here is a printable sizing guide.
You can print them out and see how they look on your wrist.

I'm jealous, one of my leather bracelets is 6inches and that's a little looser than I'd like to wear a watch at. I have a huge problem trying to buy watches, and have had bad luck with them over the last few years. I'll look at that link, thanks.

I've looked at a few which I might be able to take the links out of, but they all seem to only let you easily take out only a few links, and I'd rather not have to pay for a jeweler to do it if I can help it.
I got a medium size watch that was by Fossil and the lady that sold me the watch was able to take a two of the links outs for me.
I got a sort of 3/4 size Casio watch. I don't actually know if it is a men's or women's. But I think men's as it is large. It has a plastic band. I need an awl to make another hole. My wrist is pretty tiny, I heard that a really large watch makes your wrist look bigger.

im actually thinking of geting a new watch as my old one broke and the one i got still needs to be adjusted and it not great for day to day. im thinking about getting a timex weekender the type with the interchangeable straps. i have skinny wrists not just because im FAAB but it runs in the fam so my bros have skinny wrists too. also they are unisex so they are made to be worn by men and women so they wont be huge and if the face is to big you can get a girls one and replace the strap. in addition they are timeless and the fact that they have interchangeable straps means you can switch it up if you get bored or it gets worn out or a diff color for a diff season or outfit.

I've worn the Timex Triathlon men's ever since i was 14 and started running track. I have small-ish wrists & the adjustable strap works just fine.
Thanks for the Timex suggestions, I've just ordered a Timex Weekender with metal strap (I'm not a huge fan of fabric straps as they tend to get filthy if I wear them to work and wash up) as it was on sale and I found a website where they add/remove links from pretty much any metal strap if you ask them.

Thanks again, I was starting to go a little crazy after seeing loads of really nice watches that were just going to be way to big for me.
Here is a tip for you.
If you happen to wash your watch, cell phone, blackberry, or any other small electronic - try this.
Removed the battery from the device (and chip if it is a cellphone).
Place the device in a baggie full of dried white rice.
Leave it there for three days.
The rice tends to soak up all of the moisture.
It also helps prevent later oxidation, which may be why the OP's watch stopped a couple of weeks later.

I did the rice thing, but it did take about a week before we found it and put it in rice, and it was about a week or so after that it stopped, so I think it probably was oxidisation, as the digital part is still working but the hands aren't. Actually, sometimes they do move, but it keeps severely loosing time (i.e. fifteen minutes over a three hour period) so it's just not practical to use.
The issue is that if you can't see them IRL, you're going to have a hard time knowing how it's going to look on your wrist. I had the same issue - luckily there are heaps of jewellry stores around here.
This is my watch (JAG):

Some of the guys here at Susan's recommended I have some of the links removed to help it to fit - the lady at the jewellry store was happy to remove 4 links and it fits fine. Not too big at all. I went with an "odd" watch face as the big chunky round ones looked like they were swallowing my wrist. I always liked the wide metal bands, too - leather bands just remind me of the teeny watches I've worn my whole life.
