Title: Susan's Meetup in Portland
Post by: sigmafan on July 21, 2012, 11:26:36 PM
After a successful meetup in Seattle, we are now planning one in Portland.  The planned date for this is someday in Late August and Early September on a weekend.  It's shaping up to be an overnight affair with plans to do an outdoor concert or movie screening or something like that.  There is also nightlife to scope out as well, along with other fun things.  For those that want in, just post in here and give your ideal date and thoughts about what to do.

A meet up sounds like a great time.  As for me, in August and September, I shall be at extern.  I think it might by in Vancouver, by I should find out in a week.

Depending on my schedule, I should be able to go on Sundays.

This sounds like fun! I have no idea where I'll be by late August but I'm living in Portland now and I'd be sure to make it to the GTG.

I haven't seen felix post lately, what did you all do to him on your last "get together," huh?  Or do we wait for the news story?

To Crazy Old Bat:  He hasn't posted lately because of the trip.  I'm certain he's home safe and sound.  I'll give him a call later on to see if he is.

To Tamaki:  Yay for living in Portland.  We'd love to have you over in Portland.  I know there are others who live in portland who wanted to come to Seattle, but couldn't because of distance, or other reasons.  I'm thinking about either a big meetup at some restaurant for dinner and like an outdoor concert or movie screening.  Miharu and her wife have plans for this meetup as well, so this should help out as well.

To Ms. O'Brien.  I'm thinking this lasting for a full weekend.  Maybe start on Saturday and come back on Monday.  Either way, it should be a great time.  If you have any ideas on what we all should do, let me know on here or through PM.

I'm in!

Weekends (Days = Sat/Sun/Mon) to choose from:

18/19/20 August

25/26/27 August

1/2/3 September

8/9/10 September

Any would be ok, but my choice would be 1/2/3 Sept., which may conflict with those with school-age kids.

For me, Sat Sept 1-Mon Sept 3 are ideal since I have a 3 day weekend from work. But some may have family commitments.
Sat Aug 25-Sun Aug 26 also good. :)

Wanted to mention for those of you in Portland area, I just posted an event to the calendar. On Monday August 13 Kate Bornstein is doing a free reading at Powell's City of Books. It will be filmed for her upcoming documentary 'Kate Bornstein Is a Queer and Pleasant Danger':

Hi Sigmafan,

I'm sorry that I missed your phone call last night.  Peaches and I were at the pool hall until late.... we had the stuffing beat out of us in a long drawn out match.  So it goes.

I will give you a call this evening so we can chit chat about this upcoming meet up.

See you soon!

It looks like we have a set date for the meetup in Portland.  The plan is to have it a full weekend starting on September 1st and ending on September the 3rd on Labor Day.

I am thinking about how should all of us start off the meetup?  I know that Miharu and her wife are willing to make dinner for night 1.  I'm thinking that if there is an outdoor concert or a movie, that would be a good place.  Also on day 2, a big trek to Voodoo Doughnuts to get some of their delicious doughnuts would be in order.  The rest of the time is still being discussed.  If you're interested, just respond to this post or message me privately.

Well, now I need to figure out a way to get to Portland to attend said meetup.  If anybody else who is coming from Seattle to Portland for the meetup and is willing to give me a ride, just let me know.

I would give you a ride but you'd arrive a month early.  ;D  I'm heading up to gender odyssey in Seattle this weekend then back to Portland. It also gives me a chance to see my sister for the first time since I've transitioned. A full weekend is anticipated.

I would like to attend but not sure how I'd get there, plus I have a hidden agenda  :icon_suspicious:  I've been thinking about moving to either the Portland or Seattle area and so I'd be looking for a place to move to

LOL... Kinda hard to have a hidden agenda if you tell everyone what it is

I also don't have a place to stay in Portland, and since it seems like I can't make it either, which sucks unless I can stay at someone's home and I'll help pay for food and gas and whatnot.  I can afford the greyhound down, but not any money for hotel room.

Well, I unfortunately have no ride and no money to go down there with.  So, I'm unfortunately going to have to bow out.  Maybe in the future I can go down to hang out with various susans members, but for right now it's not there.

OK, congratulations to everyone in the Northwest for the end of one of the driest Augusts in history. Take that, soggy detractors!

So I don't know if we are doing anything for a get together this weekend in PDX, with chief instigators Sigmafan and Beth Andrea unable to come. From posts, it looks like the following were yesses or maybes:
Tamaki
Ms. OBrien (Sunday)
Miharu Barbie
Me
Butterflyhugs
and we have several more in the Portland contingent.
Looks like if it happens it will just be an Oregon thing this time. If anybody wants to get together I'm game, and have a minivan that seats six. Probably nothing grand since we're all jaded locals? We could keep it to free or low budget stuff.
I'm a lousy social organizer, any volunteers? Or message me and tell me what you wanna do. I can never commit in advance but my caretakee is doing good so I'm free for the weekend.
If not, enjoy the fabulous 70's dry weather. I know I will. :)

OK. Great free stuff going on in Portland area, accessible by Max and streetcar, #1, or Maddiecar, #2. Any day/event sound good to you? Or a better suggestion? Like I said. :D When nobody suggests stuff, I just suggest what I like. ;)

Art in the Pearl: Fine Arts and Crafts Festival (Saturday, Sunday, Monday)
http://www.artinthepearl.com/festival-information/general-info/ (http://www.artinthepearl.com/festival-information/general-info/)
ok, I'm an absolute sucker for fine arts, crafts, seeing artists artifying, and live free world music and dance in a park setting. Just a couple blocks down the hill from the streetcar line.
Quote*Over one hundred artists showing and selling their work
*A World Music Stage with a variety of music and theater
*An Education Pavillion featuring hands-on art activities for children and adults
*Delicious food to enjoy
I am celebrating my new legal name this week, so I could buy anybody a meal who is short on bucks. I'd suggest a potluck picnic in the park, but I haven't been to this event before and don't know if we can smuggle in buckets of food (or have a place to eat it)

#2: Monday:
I was thinking about driving up to Timberline Lodge on Monday for the Timberline's 75th birthday party and free tribute to folk singer/activist Woodie Guthrie. I will reserve a seat for my wife in case she's up to going, but I could take up to 4 people who wanna ride. I don't think I'm up to the full 8 hours, maybe try to get there before 3 pm.
Here's the link:

QuoteA variety of tasty food and beverage offerings will be available along with face painting and other children's activities. Starting at 7 p.m. Senator Jeff Merkley is hoping to join us to introduce the event's main attraction, "Walking Woody's Road." This show celebrates American songwriter and poet Woody Guthrie. All of the artists performing have a real connection to Guthrie
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Live Music in the Outdoor Amphitheater
1pm – Moe Dixon
2pm – Eliza Gilkyson & Slaid Cleaves
3pm – Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion
4:30pm – Jimmy LaFave

Thanks, I couldn't have named me better if I did myself, which I did. ;)

So, should we Carpe Saturdum and set it up for Saturday so at least two of us will GTG, or set it up for Sunday in case others not online can come too?

I'm suggesting to meet at the Powell's City of Books entrance on the NW corner (that's 10th and Couch St, which is a streetcar stop) either at high noon on Saturday or high noon on Sunday. Then we can walk the two blocks down the hill to the Party.

It's .3 or .4 mile walk from the Red/Blue max line to that corner, or a 4 minute ride on the Streetcar. (The last Streetcar to make the Couch by Noon Saturday leaves the Library at 11:50; the last Streetcar to make the Couch by Noon Sunday leaves the Library at 11:55.)

OK, Tamaki said she could make Sunday but not Saturday. Three would be awesome, so let's go ahead and make it for Noon on Sunday at the NW corner of Powell's City of Books. I'll be the red head in the polka dot dress if you need a landmark. PM me for my mobile phone# if you like.

Just a remember, Saturday is the first day of the TriMet changeover. Get yourself a day pass (there are no longer 1 2 or all zone fares, and no more free rail zone).

P.S. so I don't forget to mention it, there is a great trans-friendly vintage clothing store (CHEAP!) called Fat Fancy! that is 30 yards NW from the westbound Max stop at the Galleria/10th Ave. The owners are part of the rainbow and all staff are very LGBTQI friendly.

Hey sorry for being incommunicado yall. I've been so carefully rationing my non-Leah energies and I kinda assumed somebody would text or call if I forgot about this for too long. I'm terrible with anything that isn't sharpied onto my calendar. And I've turtled up pretty hardcore lately.

I know some of you have my number. If I don't show up feel free to call. I don't have to pick up my kid until 4pm Sunday, and even after that I'm free for family-friendly stuff.

Anybody who doesn't mind roughing it a bit is welcome to crash at my house for a day or two. I have a floor, a couch, and on Saturday night there's my daughter's bunk beds if you aren't squeamish about being in a kid space. And my bed is huge if you aren't a rapist or psychopath. If you are I'll gut you. :D

For what it's worth, my half-assededly imagined plans this weekend were going to be to go to a trans/gay/sexual minorities meetup at McMenamins (which i'd need to ask about bringing ppl to) and to possibly comply with my roommate's insistence that I go see Beasts of the Southern Wild at the beer and pizza theatre.

I really feel icky about the Pearl district but I'll go there if that's where my lovely NW Susan's people are.

I do love Woody Guthrie but my kid isn't good for road trips.

I know lots of parks and free stuff and I'm in a financial hole but it we do something that costs money I might could cover a person or two. I usually spend at least 40 dollars a month on alcohol or broccoli or some other luxury, and I can put this toward you guys if need be.

Good morning y'all.  I just rolled out of my cocoon... I'm surprised to see you all organizing here.  I had assumed that the plan to get together fizzled out with Sigmafan's change of availability.

I don't really have any plans this weekend, except that a friend is coming over to play pool with me at 3:00 on Saturday.

Peaches and I are down for Art in the Pearl.  We can be at Powell's at noon.  Felix and Janet already have my phone number.  I'll PM my cell phone number to Madeline.  This will be fun!

Thank you Madeline for stepping in and making this happen.  You rock!

Hugs!

Next get together planned is a 'Carpe Solarum' (Sunburn the Carp?) picnic in one of Portland's free parks accessible by mass transit, on Sunday September 23rd. Details to follow.

Initial plans is for a free event, BROTHAS ('bring rour own tofu, hummous, and stuff') with at least one sun umbrella for the solarphobic, a croquet match for the Alice in Wonderland set, possible cowboy golf (if we can find some cowboys ;) )and lots of great conversation. Family members and significant others always welcome.

Post in this forum if you couldn't make the first get together and want to be sure to be kept in the loop on the details for this one on the 23rd.

Email me or PM me if you want to be included in the event planning.

If someone wants to make or bring something for everybody, that's cool, but let's avoid the stress of a full blown potluck (I still get jello casserole flashbacks!) At minimum, if you plan to share, please bring an ingredient list at least in your head, and make sure what needs to stay cold stays cold and what needs to stay hot stays hot. I know we have vegans, vegetarians, at least one tree nut allergy, and probably a few compromised immune systems, so no Haggus-and-Mayonaisse Macadamia Sun Salad.

If someone has a transportation challenge, an injury or handicap, or is just a mass transit in portland newbie, let me know. We can carpool and/or maxpool to get you there, either the whole way or the the last 100 yards/meters/cubits.

I was so looking forward to see you all again.  (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsmileys.on-my-web.com%2Frepository%2FAnimals%2Fferret-1.gif&hash=4a7edb8e10f639196821bd403e6dc36860459f64)
Title: Susan's Meetup in Portland - Second Edition
Post by: MadelineB on September 24, 2012, 12:35:57 AM
We had a wonderful time today picnic-ing, lounging, lollygagging, gabbing, and generally flinging our balls around in public (very closely bowled game of Bocce/lawn bowling; well rolled everybody!).  ;D
We looked just like this:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.btinternet.com%2F%7Ebagatelle%2F1674_cottone_gamester_bocce_or_bowls.jpg&hash=268aa607e0968bc10ba3c3edf067da795773eaa7)

I only broke one tree with my wild throws. :(

To those who couldn't make it today, hope your family, work, and personal situations are all ok, and look forward to seeing you next time!

Couldn't have asked for better company or better weather. :D

It was a really fun day. I had such a fun time just hanging with the girls. I am already looking forward to the next time we can meet.

I had a lot of fun yesterday... :)

Darn hills and balls = increasing velocity + nearby pedestrians = OMG!! Stop stop stop! LOL

Unfortunately, that random passerby I pressed into service as a photographer managed, in spite of her friendly demeanor, to take two very clear pictures of people who were out-of-focus...here's the better of the two:

From L to R: Myself, Brooke, Madeline, and Ms. OBrien.

I may very well be taking a closer look at Portland in the next couple/3 years. I really liked the feel of it, it's better than Seattle for what little I saw. I'd like to check out jobs, rent, fun places to go/people to do, etc.

It was great fun...and thanks to Brooke for non-stop talking the entire trip home; she was just making sure I wasn't asleep at the wheel!

Interesting...at ( PM I was calling out of work for today. I actually got home at about 2250, got a good night's sleep, and the descent into Hell has stopped. But, enough about that!  :-\

It was just such a perfect day! Good weather, odd people, and the occasional dog-horse... :)

It is nice when my constant chattering is appreciated. Normally people just wish I would be quiet.  ;D

Glad to hear that all of you had a fantastic time.  Hopefully the next Seattle Meetup will be just as fun.

I found a few other pics, but they were all either overexposed (phone was set to "night vision" + taking pics in the day...who'd've thunk? LOL) but there was one more that's usable:

Brings back great memories...

Yes, they are my older sister's balls. She let me borrow them since she was in Utah and couldn't use them. That reminds me, I need to find out how much it will cost to get a set of my own!

A good set of Bocce Balls do cost quite a bit.  Maybe about $50 for a good set, according to Amazon.
