Imagine a world where you had to look things up in dictionaries. Where you had to trudge to libraries or pick up the phone. Where you had to go to shops not to practise the national religion, but to buy things you needed.
Luckily, for most of us, this horrible vision of a neo-Neanderthal dystopia is just that. We have the internet and it's here to stay. We may spend our lives bathed in a bluish haze, but it's a small price to pay to have the world at your fingertips. We find our books, friends, partners and homes online - and in some cases new lives.
Like "Pamela", aka Stephen, a transsexual from London, whose quick search on Google resulted in a new life as a holy eunuch at an Indian temple. There is, clearly, hope for everyone.
