Indeed, when used in conjunction with skin lotion and Bacitracin ointment.
I use a 120 grit sandpaper drum at low speed and judiciously and carefully abrade the dry skin layer from the surface of the face, apply the skin lotion and finally the Bacitracin ointment.
These need to be monitored and reapplied as necessary, during the healing phase.
It seems to work very well and my skin looks good.

Although I can imagine that this technique would be quite effective, I wonder about the safety of the process. It seems to me that one small slip could get cause the abrasion to go below the first layer and cause injury. Extreme care seems to be a requirement with this endeavor.
But, hey, it's your face to do with as you please!

I have the neutrogena system at home too. My skin at one point had just suddenly dried and got "reptile-like", so I bought the stuff and after a week, my skin was back to normal. I'm thinking I might use it again soon. The neutrogena system is quite safe and you just scrub until the skin turns red.

rhonda, SO brought "Neutrogena's (advanced solutions) Body Resurfacing Cream" home for me the other day and it seems to work very well. I doubt it is very expensive. It's a gritty paste with a course applicator I suppose you could liken to a sandpaper treatment and there appears to be no restrictions on where one can use it.

It sounds like it would be effective at 'dermabrasion' and less 'tricky' to apply.
The Moto-Tool is OK for occasional [weekly] use and is very effective but it does leave the skin a bit irritated for a couple of hours and this isn't an activity in which you can afford a lapse in attention while engaged in. :o
Ouch! I beg your pardon Rhonda, but I dont think it is safe to use sandpaper on your face. Wouldnt it be easier and safer to use a dermabrasion cream?
My sister had horrible scars from acne and chicken pox. She had dermabrasion and looks fabulous! It was very expensive and made her face look really badly burned for a while, the results were amazing! Now her confidence in her outward beauty is as high as her inner beauty! Be careful with that sandpaper!
Funny you should mention that.
My epilator came with a dermabrasion attachment -- it's a little super-fine sanding block that vibrates like a detail sander. And it's VERY good and totally painless. But I get this fine white dust sloughing of the patchy dry areas (I have eczema and am very prone to dry patchy skin, moisturize as I might.)
So I know just where you're coming from ;)

P.S., my makeup and jewelery boxes are plastic Plano tackle boxes -- lots of separate compartments for foundation, pencils, brushes, earrings, necklaces, &c, &c... And CHEAP!, too ;D
They do have a sandpaper thingy for shaving the legs. It's like a mouse sander with a maglight sized handle and goes around and around and around sanding the legs or wherever you use it. There have also been sandpaper products for use on the face/ legs etc. I never was fond of any of them due to I have a extremely high pain tolerance and don't notice it with the result that I'd be damaged for awhile lol.
