Title: Social Security/SSI and transition.
Post by: Darrin Scott on August 19, 2012, 10:51:02 PM
Hello all,

I receive SSI benefits and I plan on getting a legal gender and name change. As far as I know, with this whole process I also need to change my SS number as well to not be linked to my female name. Does anyone have any experience with SSI or receiving any kind-of social security benefits and transitioning? Will I have to reapply? I rely on this money to pay rent and other expenses. I just need an idea of how this process works. Thanks.

When I changed my name the number did not change.  The same thing when I changed my gender.  As far as I know the is no linking to a "other" gender, "other" name file.

If there is a reason, you can ask that your name change court record be sealed, as well as your gender change. But it's extremely difficult to sever all links between your former name and the one you will change it to.

I know I'm not in the States but here in Aus the centre link (SS) officer that changed my records only needed the change of name birth certificate to change my details and amended my gender marker without the surgery after I asked to speak with her in a private room explaining my situation and said anything related to my old name would be locked or changed to conform with my new details,
She said if I ever have to reapply in the future my ID# will stay the same but my old name and gender will not appear in there search records...

I've yet to meet a non-supportive SSA person.  It is all out there, but you will be Mr X once it is all changed unless they go digging.

Thanks all!

I'm kind-of wondering if they'd delay my benefits due to a name and gender change. I guess I should call a local SS office?
