The consulate, according to funeral director Ruth Maltez, received word that a community viewing was going to take place. According to Maltez, who already had Ordeñana dressed in the dress suit that her friends purchased for her, Ordeñana's father contacted the consulate and requested that she be dressed as a boy.

Maltez said that she complied with the father's request due to legal concerns. Maltez changed Ordeñana's clothing and pulled back her hair into a ponytail to make her appear as a boy. She did not cut her hair.

That's sad. Sounds as if the family wasn't too accepting of her. But couldn't they at least respect her wishes in death?

And for the rest of us, that means having a will, naming an executor you trust, and giving your executor the sole control over memorial services.

That's horrible, but the funeral director had to do it in the absence of any document or legal spouse.

This makes me feel physically ill. How dare her family be so cold and callous in their selfishness.

This is one of my two greatest nightmares.  I do not not not want to be buried as "Robert."

as a living person, i am horrified. it is like the desecration of a corpse. luckily, her soul is free now, and no longer connected to that body. she is most probably at peace, and doesn't care. still, it is very sad that her own family has so little understanding...

All the same, it has happened more times than can be counted.

I'll make sure to put a stipulation to be dressed as female in my will.  I will definitely be assigning it to an executor I trust as well, since I really don't trust my parents and this is exactly the kind of thing they would do.

Well, since I have it stipulated in my will that there will be NO funeral and I am to be cremated, all I need worry about is the death certificate.  And as my name is legally Sarah Louise R, that is what will be on the death certificate.

well, the real key is in letting everyone else die first. then you can dress them in clothes that are inappropriate for their gender...or not...
