I have picked up a name change packet but i was wondering how i go about changing my gender marker on my DL when the time comes is it fairly easy in the state of North Carolina? Is it required to have SRS first?
In NC, you have to change things first with SS, then the DMV. The rules on gender markers in our state is also surgery required, just as it is with SS. My therapist told me a few years ago that they did have a rule change for the state at one time a number or years ago, but it was killed off about a day after it went into effect and no changes for the better since.
But luckily, so far, it hasn't been much of an issue for me to have M on my license with my female name, most people seem to overlook that since they're looking at it to verify your name or age, not your sex.
Thank you for the info ^_^
You are quite welcome:) By the way, I live at the coast, Downeast Carteret County.
I love the coast =) but i am stuck in the triad area :/ small town called Lexington
I also live in NC. And was hoping to get my gender marker changed for marriage. Was wandering of either of you have had any luck? I been on T since 2007, name change in 2006. Now it's 2014 and really need the gender marker ASAP. No surgeries as of yet. Just haven't had the money. Hope you have had some luck?
North Carolina law on Changing Gender Marker
See Statute 130A-118:
"A written request from an individual is received by the State Registrar to change the sex on that individual's birth record because of sex reassignment surgery, if the request is accompanied by a notarized statement from the physician who performed the sex reassignment surgery or from a physician licensed to practice medicine who has examined the individual and can certify that the person has undergone sex reassignment surgery."
North Carolina will then issue a new birth certificate.
I also found this and might give some light on DMV

Looks like yes you will need GRS. but at what point or degree i guess would be the question.
