OK, this might come off as kind of an odd question...
I've been/am told constantly that I'm "too skinny," etc. This may be the case for men, since people usually consider the ideal to be lean but muscular (I'm just plain skinny and soft, but I have a satisfactory BMI of ~19). I'm not a man though, so ultimately I don't think this kind of image applies (and it's a stereotype/idealization anyway).
But what I am curious about (now that I'm undergoing HRT) - would it actually help my feminization if I put on a little padding? Has anyone ever experimented with something like that? I'm not exactly looking to go all tummy-tastic, but I'd do it if it would mean I wasn't seen as anything else but a girl to the observer (or at least facilitated the process).

The body does need something to work with. But I will advise you to put on weight. I was down to 140 lbs and someone talked me into gain weight. I have yoyo'd between 160 and 180 lbs since.
Remember that you will lose muscle mass thus you BMI will go down.
Alright, I've been trying to eat higher calorie foods lately. So I'll find out sooner or later ;)
I do find myself loosing weight a little quicker than usual (I think). So this might actually be a change for the better.
I am in the 160-170 range as well.
Puberty makes you hungry, just an extra layer of baby fat that I will burn away sooner or later but not within the first 2 years. Plenty of people do their best to maintain their weight lower, and do just fine.
If you research spirol and food though on the first page theres this study that talks about your body taking it better during a meal. I am not a chemist, doctor, or biologist though. Honestly would never be able to make heads/tails of the full study beyond that basic level.
A friend of mine who is transitioning as well said her doctor recommended eating an egg. That one of the fatty compounds in it are good for the T-Blocking functionality. Forgot what it was though.
Don't go overboard in high caloric foods though, don't want to put yourself at risk for other problems.
BMI's are really just a super quick/simple tool for people to check if they're within a healthy weight range. There's far more to determining the shape your body is in than a simple height divided by weight squared equation. It's handy to know but, you should also know your body fat percentage, your waist to hip ratio, blood pressure and resting heart rate. These are all super simple things to work out though :) there are a lot of calculators online for figuring the numbers out but for the most part the numbers vary across a binary gender standard... When I use them I'm never sure if I'm supposed to click the m or f box, hormonaly I'm a girl, with feminized fat distribution, so that might mess with the male numbers, but my lack of female hips/pelvis would mess wth the female numbers Lol... You can't win some days :) lol anyway sorry for rambling... Its not going to hurt of you put a bit of fat on, if anything it's just going to help feminize you.. Fat bum, thighs and breasts :) it's hard to be curvy when you've got no stuffing :)
Since I've been on HRT, I've been craving greasy food like I never did before. This is landing on my hips, bum, and boobs, mostly. Bread goes straight to the belly :(. It's definitely helping with the curve-profile, but I find I need a bit more exercise to be able to carry the extra well.

Yeah for the first year my diet and tastes changed a bit.. I've never been into shell fish at all... now days I cannot get enough mussels. I've never had a particularly healthy relationship with food, as a teen I used anorexia as a coping strategy, now days though I take pretty good care of myself, my dr tells me I need to eat a lot more carbs to help breast development but I think I was just unlucky in the breast development lottery..
Gods, me too - after 30 years being vegetarian, since being on HRT I can't go more than a couple of days without eating fish. Very weird. And when my T level spiked a few months ago (because my doc inadvisedly took me off anti-androgens) I found myself having to eat salami every day for a month, the thought of which disgusts me now. Basically just like being pregnant, from what my cis women friends tell me.
hmm, if anything hrt made me more inclined to go veggie.. I'm not a total veggie, I still eat seafood, and the occasional chicken but I dont cook it for myself. since hrt I lost interest in most red meats... with the exception of venison.. omnomnomon venison

I keep getting the same "too skinny" comments every day (if we follow the old online calculators, I have a 21.1 on 173 cm and 138 pounds), and is a pain when they ask why do I want to be like this... I swapped my diet to "more or less the same, minus the unneeded junk foods" + extra exercising. I wonder what adjusts I will need to make on HRT to keep the fit status.
Any ways, If I get to be on HRT I won't be cutting on exercise to get a bit mode "desirable fat" or extra eating. I need to keep a decent level of strenght to do my job or keep a "security" feeling (If a rapist was to appear, I want to be able to send his teeth flying), and I am not that much interested on big boobs (i'd like them, but... Mobility goes first).

I've been on HRT for 14 years. Prior to HRT I was skinny all over so when I wanted to put on weight I though it would distribute fat in the right places. Wrong! all the fat went on my belly while my legs, butt, hips are still stick thin and show very little sign of improvement. The HRT seems to have just targeted the belly area and no where else to distribute fat. It is a big disappointment after all these years on HRT and I have no one to advise me on how to change my fat distribution structure? I am also two sizes bigger on the top than the bottom where as cis females are usually bigger on the bottom.
Fat distribution is my biggest curse and I wish I could effect a female fat distribution pattern. My diet is very good with fresh vegtables (not potatoes or fat inducing carbs), fruit and a little lean meat like chicken or fish. I also exercise daily. I am a little angry about the myths and claims of what HRT can do.

If you've been on hrt that long, maybe that's just your body?
As someone who can and does present in both genders as I feel free, and being on HRT for 3 years, I've deliberately kept my weight low for reaasons of breast development, ie if I put on a few pounds, they go straight to my t!ts! So I don't. If you want to develop, I'd say eat a higher calorie diet for a few years to get the curves, then lose back a little.... the weight will stay more on the new bits I think.

I have also cut a lot on the daily intake of meat, getting comments like "how can you hold all the day with just that tiny meal you finished in five minutes"? Cue women eating salads and trying expensive "miracle" diets. Sometimes I miscalculate the amount of food I prepared and spend a hungry afternoon, but for a guy that expends 7 hours per day sitting and looking at a screen, I don't need a lot.
Lately I can't eat a lot without feeling guilty. For the moment most of those 7 kg lost is only fat from the belly and thighs, with only the "sitting" belly and tiny moobs remaining. And not even sure about those last ones, if it is gynecomastia caused by exercise or plain fat. At least they don't bounce anymore like before getting fit, so I guess they have improved...

Nothing unhealthy about taking a snack when you need it. I keep a can of peanuts in my desk drawer for just that occasion.

I had a similar-ish experience. In the first few weeks of HRT (premarin) I put on four inches on my butt. Over the next fourteen years I gained four stone, mainly on the belly and my waist went up by six inches.
Stopped HRT eight years ago and lost all the weight and got to the stage where I was getting far too thin and was having to eat all kinds of junk just to maintain my weight. I feel that the belly was not so much HRT as just weight gain.
I've just restarted with progynova (2 weeks) and my butt is swelling again but as yet the waist is the same. I don't feel as hungry so not eating as much. I am noticing much more feminising effect than with the Premarin but then I'm not smoking now. Still using Ecigs tho.
I still hate seafood, I wish HRT made me love it. I could use some omega lovin!
My diet has changed a little bit, but its more on variations than outright differences. I can eat cucumbers without it driving me nuts for instance so I tend not to take out the cucumbers anymore.
I have these urges for fatty foods to, but as I said I think that has more to do with puberty than being a girl. When I went through male puberty it hit me in similar ways as female puberty has. Male puberty had a more distinct effect on my diet than female thus far.
One thing I hate is now I need more candy... after my meals I tend to crave something sweet more than I ever have had. Even as a kid... but I fight it because diabetes run in my family and thats the last thing I want.
Everyone tells me that I look so much more girly now that I put on some weight. I'm not "fat" but I was always extra thin and now I'm approaching the higher end of the normal BMI scale for my height. I think extra padding helps make us more curvy and covers up the male bone structure. I do need to work off a bit of belly fat before that gets out of control :P
a little fat is like instant facial feminization surgery. The rounding of the face mixed with longer hair covering the sides is like instant femme. Mixed with a synthetic wig with decent bangs you would be surprised at how feminine you can look before getting any surgery.
Of course YMMV but still a good first step if you are not in love with your facial structure.
Maybe i'll post a picture pre-hormones with the perfect lighting conditions to blot out stubble.

Keep in mind that some of these people, many in my case, especially women, are actually extremely jealous but it comes out as criticism to hide the jealousy. I finally clued in when some of them began to admit it.

For me its not jealousy, weight loss is not impossible for anyone. As long as your not malnutrition which is the biggest fear of those very skinny you should be ok but gaining a little weight is not a bad way to go about it. In the end of the day the results don't lie.
I don't think anyone is saying to binge
My doctor's suggested to me that I eat a little more. Right now I've got like... perfect cholesterol and the like, but I'm willing to break that a bit to get a lil' prettier ;)

That's what I was kind of hoping for. Along with my hips filling out a bit. I've got a very nerdy/geeky body type atm =/

This is the profile of every person that has told me that:
- Woman
- 40+ year old
- Married
- Has children
- Slightly overweight
- Keeps trying miracle diets and paying to doctors
- Does not do any exercise. When asked, she always reply "I have children"
- Has given up trying to regain shape.
Probably they noticed because of the quick loss of fat on the face, which is slowly refilling at this time.

You look great. I wish I could put on weight, especially on my face (which looks a bit thin and gaunt) but the only part I seem to get fat is on my belly. It's very frustrating.
So, after eating fatty, higher cholesterol foods (i.e. pizza, burgers, Indian food, Thai curry, ice cream, etc), I've noticed that fat build up really is a bit more distributed. Still catching a slight amount at the tummy, but nothing that doesn't fast off within 1-2 days. I'm actually (finally) getting a butt! Yay!

Wow, I went from like... no butt, to more than modest butt. It's totally jiggly now, too... and my hips got a lot broader. Unfortunately, my waist is still a bit narrow, so it's kind of an awkward shape. And my face hasn't puffed out (in a feminine way, of course) as much as I'm hoping for. Overall, upping my calories/fat intake seems to be working. I think I may give it a temporary break so I don't add too much to my tummy.
My Dr swears by carbs. I eat lots of whole grain pasta and bread, I'm also mad on Thai, Japanese, Chinese noodle based dishes.

Carbs are the one of the root causes of all my problems and poor fat distribution. Carbs have caused me to have fat in my belly and no where else. Interesting. I cut out all food high in starch, gluten and dairy as an experiment to see how my body reacts to a 10,000 year old diet. So that means cutting out all grains, potatoes, pasta and almost all dairy etc. I had also been feeling tired and sluggish. However, my fat distribution isn't so bad. But I would never say no to further improvement. All those bad carbs are responsible for the higher incidence of type II diabetes we see today.
I was mostly consuming more fats and proteins (quite a bit of fried tofu as of late), as well as carbs through sugars. I'm not a nutritionist, but I suppose genetics plays a major role in breakdown and distribution of excess. Of course some is going to my tummy, so I'm moderating my intake as well.
My boyfriend... lucky bastard. His tummy stays -flat- even without exercise. He can eat McDonald's and pizza without it making any noticeable change (of course I don't let him eat either too often, being that it's dangerous in the long-term >=( ).
Within the first 4-5 months, I've gained back 8-10 pounds...but it's basically gone to my hips, butt, and breasts, not my belly (which is where it used to go). I find myself so much more hungry than I used to...I'm just accepting it. My weight is pretty stable right now, at least, and I exercise a fair amount during the week.
The best bet is to wait at least a year before gaining weight on purpose .That way it's a far safer bet that it will go to the hips, butt ,arms and back instead of becoming visceral fat (internal organs)
I put on a lot of weight on HRT.I started on a low dose of Premarin for over 18 months when I was given a high dose it piled on.As a guy I could eat like a bear and not put an inch on,I had a 26" waist.I'm overweight mainly on my waist but fat does feminize your appearance
Hell yes! The weight you put on HRT will mostly go the 'right places' :D
I can't seem to gain any friggin' weight since HRT & my appetite has been crazy since I started so I eat even more. And I seriously only eat fast, greasy, fatty junk food. IE: I ate 7 slices of pizza yesterday evening. I never work out but I do walk to & from work which is like 3 miles. I wish I could a put on a few pounds & fill out cause honestly think I'd look better.

I would also say be VERY weary of just eating a ton of carbs and sugars, they can really do a number on your immune system and overall health to say the least. Our immune system resides mainly in the gut (intestines) where all the good bacteria exist. Having too much excess sugar feeds bad bacteria and your immune system is forced to fight it, which takes away from your bodies ability to fight off colds, infection, and can even stimulate really bad stuff like cancer. White blood cell count is inversely correlated to intake of sugar and simple carbs like starches (potatoes, bread, cereals, white rice, non whole-grain pasta). Just something to keep in mind for all the fast food eaterz out there!
The healthiest way to pick up your caloric intake is to eat more high fat foods like avocados, cook with olive oil or even better coconut oil (if you aren't allergic), fatty fish like salmon/herring/mackerel, tofu, olives, nuts. They won't make your blood sugar level skyrocket. Personally avocados have been my saving grace. And who doesn't like avocados?? I eat them whole... add a little salt & pep and viola! Instant fatty snack that is really good for you!
