Title: Joining the force and discrimination?
Post by: Biscuit_Stix on September 16, 2012, 08:27:56 PM
This is a copy post from the FTM section, but I figured this was also a good place to ask. I'm not spamming I'm just covering the best two spots to ask.

Anyway, I've always wanted to be a police officer, but I'm afraid that being FTM and pre-everything will hinder my ability to accomplish this. Not because I think men are better cops, but because I think that I might get fired if I eventually come out at work. I got my application to join the force, but now I'm hesitating. I don't want to get my hopes up, get my dream job, and then get stuck working as a woman for the rest of my life (which could be very short, what with all the bullets and such). I know its probably an oddly specific question, but are there any FTM officers out there? Or does anyone know one? And what's work like? Stories are always helpful. (BTW I'm in Oklahoma, where men are men and cows are afraid, so there's that, too.)

I am putting this note in the topic to let other modetators know I have seen this post.

Generally, we don't allow cross posting.  However, I think this is important enough that I want you to get answers.  In a day or two, I will merge the posts in the most popular location.

With that said, applying to a PD as a female may be an advantage in this economy.  And depending on the HR rules of the Department, and the local discrimination laws, you may not be hindered in transition.  Do your research.  And live your dreams.

Depending on your municipality they may want a TS police officer to act as a liaison to the LGBT community. I've wanted to be a police officer since I was little and gave up my dream some time ago (though I may try again in about 100 lbs) and have seen some cities actively looking for LGBT folks to provide better interactions with the community.

As Jamie said, look at the rules protecting you in your city and state and go from there. There's always departments outside of OK. When I was actively trying to get into law enforcement I looked all over the country.

I think its' a lot easier to do it where it's already been done.
