Title: Facial Hair Advice
Post by: Nygeel on September 20, 2012, 08:45:16 PM
Hey, sooo I'm in a bit of a situation, wanted to see if there were folks in the same/similar situation and find out hat they did, or what people would do.

I'm getting kinda beard-ish. It's patchy, and the result of not shaving for a long time. I feel like I need at least some facial hair to get seen as male more often, but trying to determine what to do in this specific case is a little confusing. I just got a job (woohoo!) that has somewhat vague standards when it comes to hair. The standards are basically "don't look weird" when it comes to hair. No weird colors, or shapes, I guess. I also guess it continues for facial hair. I want to look good and make a good impression but I don't want to get rid of all of my facial hair. What would you do? Or, if you work where there's vague standards (this is a job related to best buy) what have you done?

What I got:

I don't know about regulations on hair, but if they're not going to let you have it on the neck/under the chin then I'd just go with crazy long sideburns.  I've never seen a female with sideburns so it would probably still help people gender you correctly like a beard does.

Hey Nygeel, at the very most square it out so its a solid chin strap. But your hairs are too spaced out to really do anything else right now because you're going to want to keep as much of what you got now as possible. I think your facial hair growth is coming along great! I get really excited for you when I see your changes going well. I can't wait to see you with a nice thick beard someday :) Congratulations on the new job and let us know with a pic what you end up doing!

I'm sorry, Nygeel, but that's a little patchy to wear to a workplace, don't you think?

I would shave, as that kind of looks really unprofessional and might actually prevent you from getting a job. Someone might assume you had just forgotten to shave for a couple of days and to most employers, that sort of look would come across as lazy. Most guys, in general, who are allowed to keep their facial hair have it growing in more fully.

Again, sorry, dude.
I edited this because I know it might come across as harsh, but it's the truth. I'm looking for a job right now too, so I understand where you're at though.

The situation is that I already have the job, but their standards for the dress code are kind of vague when it comes to facial hair.

Anyways...I ended up shaving most everything off (kept my sideburns long). Decided to name my beard Mr. Scruffleupagus.

Your facial hair is just like mine is. Sometimes I think it's better to be clean shaven, but in order to pass it's best to keep what you have. I would just say, shape it up as neatly as possible or trim it...? But since it's not thick I don't think you can trim it...? But the way you have it in your avatar, that looks neat. It's shaped up very nicely. I like that.

I was misgendered a whole bunch of times with this facial hair.

I don't know. I'm in the same boat although you've been on T longer than I have. Maybe try to keep the hair on your chin really short so only like some of it is there rather than shave it off completely? Oh, and keep the side burns. I find having facial hair helps me pass better.

i'd say let it grow back and only shave it if they say something about it.
