So, it is like I have been in the so-called RLE but had mange to avoid having to wear a panty hose, I always consider them "matronly." But, yesterday, it is like I had to brief my division head (the gal oversees about 70,000 engineers and scientists), so I was told it was a "dress up" function.
So, I got this sheer pantyhose (nude) to go with my sexy yet elegant dress. This is the very first time I had to wear a pantyhose, and you know what? what a pain in the ass, I was hot, my dress was cling to it, and finally I got a "run" So, shortly after brief, I went to the ladies room, and got rid of the damn hose.
I hate pantyhoses, how about you?
Plain hose are out unless you are over 65. However, ones with a print are in. As long as they go with your outfit which can be tricky depending on your style.
I am not saying that you have to wear them at any age. I personally like to see a womans legs. But, to me, hose look funny on a young woman (young based on personality, not physical age).
I wore hose a few times years ago when I wore a skirt or dress and it was cold. But not having even put on a dress or a skirt in about 6 years now, I don't think I even have a single pair in my drawer.
my oldest daughter just chime in,
Daughter: what brand did you buy Dad?
Me: hum, I do not remember, kind like in a little box, sheer something!
Daughter: where did you buy it
Me: the drug store
Daughter: no, no, no, you have to buy good quality hoses, like the ones Mom gets at Macy's
Really, is there a quality difference?

Most definitely. A really good pair tends to be hard to cause them to run and reduces the chances of sagging in some spots while not moving around on you any.
if you need to wear pantyhose you need to shop for the quality. It's like any other article of clothing when it comes to finding the size, style, brand, etc.
Drugstore brands are the worse out there. They don't fight right, they itch, they run easily and there not very attractive. Oh yes, there is a difference between drugstore and department store brands. It's like getting a hotdog you found on a Picnic Table and eating at a four star restaurant (bad analogy but you get the picture :) The drugstore pantyhose, in my opinion do not even look like hosiery...more like a sheer web of mess to me
The hosiery in the department stores is what you want. You know you have a decent pair when you can't even feel them on you. I have to wear them often because of where I work if I wear skirts or dresses. I had to do it through trial and error too. It sucks at first but it improves.
Hosiery is coming back. I've seen lots of people wearing them now. Tights are commonplace now. One of those fashion cycles that's back
Don't know about the matronly and they do take some care and attention but nothing beats the feeling of pantyhose. It's like having your legs hugged.
You probably didn't expect a dude to chime in here but I actually really like wearing tights :D They're so snug and cosey and make my legs feel...I dunno...safe? o_0 Not sure how to describe what I mean.
I've often wondered if I could get away with wearing tights and shorts when I pass better because I think it looks really cool when girls do it :P patterned or coloured ones like, not sheer ones. I do wear sheer ones under my jeans when it's nippy though, so does my partner.
I wear them in the winter and they def help keep my legs warm wearing a skirt + make my legs look great. Quality does matter. Also you either need to have a skirt with a smooth liner or wear a slip else it does turn into a clingy mess.
Also do NOT wear open toe shoes with hose. Maybe with colored tight it would be doable depending on the shoes and how funky you are aiming for but sheer panty hose + open toes shoes = nasty!

I totally understand..tights do make your legs safer....also theyre great for long hours on your feet
And avoid the ones that come in little plastic eggs.
High quality hoses are less likely to snag or run.
I love wearing them. Especially in the winter. And quality does make a difference.
I love wearing pantyhose also :) They have a certain elegance to them that makes me feel very feminine and ladylike
But as mentioned, you get what you pay for so buy quality :) I usually wait for a good sale, but if you're in a pinch and plan to toss them out afterwards anyway, just about any brand will do
So, it seems from the un-scientific Mom research reported below that VS or DK hoses are the best,
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/shopping/2005/12/hosed.html (http://www.slate.com/articles/life/shopping/2005/12/hosed.html)
and the very most expensive. I couldn't spend 40 bucks on a pair of pantyhose.
I vote for yes when in formal meetings. I wear Vogue. Never wear cheap panty hose or you get all of the problems. They have to be sheer and well fitting (IMO). In winter sheer black panty hose is common, but the last winter season here (just finishing) tight and coloured or patterned leggings were very popular. Wear them with a hip length sweater etc. Or even with a mini skirt. A really short skirt and leggings looked quite cute.
Popular during our winter were boots, as usual, no heel was common.
One fashion that did come through (sorry for going off topic) was tall girls wearing boots with high heels. It seemed to be a bit of a statement, 'Look at me my legs go on for ever'
In summer the dress sense in Australia is not to wear hose unless it is to sex up. Few things do weird things to a male brain than garter belts and stockings ;D
During the day tanned legs, even if it is fake tan is preferable than hose. Many moisturisers have a fake tanning component so the more you use them the more tanned your legs are.
Summer fashion is just coming in here, short, very short and colour, pastels and aztec prints are popular. For young woman T-s with gothic style prints, even as raised embossed styles are in. I just saw today very tight black leggings with heavy embossed jewellery all over them. Looked awesome.
Sorry I'd better shut up before I go into shopping frenzy.
OH! I got it! For me pantyhose are the female equivalent of ties! There are places where they are expected, but I'd prefer to not have to wear them.
Leggings on the other hand... last year winter I put together an outfit with a mini-skirt and leggings. I did it because I saw girls on campus dressed that way and I thought, "Why?!? Aren't you cold?!" But then I did it anyway...
...
...
OMG! I felt so alive!
I ♥ winter!
I was once preoccupied with pantyhose and silk stockings, but no longer after I could wear them frequently. They help my legs warm while exposing my leg lines in winter. Nowadays leggings are more popular, but I still see many college students wearing nude pantyhose under short pants or mini skirts in September. I have many pairs of pantyhose whose quality is nice, but still can be purchased at conveninet stores (here in my country, the quality of pantyhoses is better than those in the US.) In the US, my favorite brand was Hue.
My only wish is to war fishnet stockings in public. I have several pairs of fishnet from Leg avenue, but have never tried them outdoors. Probably I may try this fall.
barbie~~
Given the changeablity of Tasmania's weather (stop giggling Cindy!) I, like most local women, am likely to be wearing tights or hose any time of the year. Lots of women were wearing faux leather tights with a mini skirt this winter, and boots are popular all year round. Except when the Sun actually comes out, and we get to wear sandals.
Karen.
i hate pantyhose to death, and only wear them if i can't find any stockings that are long enough, when wearing a skirt or a dress. though in summer i don't wear them at all. i don't tights either, but footless ones are ok some times

Maybe this is a language issue, but what is the difference between tights and pantyhose?
I wear pop socks. The last time I wore tights was last year under jeans to keep my legs warm. About once every 5 years. 10 years ago I often did because my boyfriend liked it. ::)
As someone thsat lives in the United Kingdom and overseas and has to put up with different seasons, I really believe in buying and wearing good panti hose. I always buy the good brands through from the Department store and never buy them from the Supermarket as they are generally rubbish.
I always try to keep my toesnails well manicured with a fresh coluor on them so favour open toe shoes , peep toes or sandals in summer Also of course it is very important to ensure your legs and thighs (and bikini lines) are hair free. I prefer to get my legs waxed at the beauty salon:
Some brands I can recommend are Marks & Spencer Autograph range - 7 Denier (very Sheer) open Toe (nude or Cocioa colour):

During winter time I wear something like the 10 denier moisirising ladder resist: Suntan or Nude are best

Since I have done Colour Analysis - unfortunately Black is out for me, but on special occiasions I do sneek a pair of these Mock Stockings tights in 10 Denier. They are just gorgeous:

If I am in Australia I generally wear Donna Karan;
Again the toeless brand shoes of my pretty toes best: http://shop.myer.com.au/shop/ProductDisplay?urlRequestType=Base&catalogId=10051&categoryId=%5BLjava.lang.String%3B%4038443844&productId=64123&urlLangId=-1&langId=-1&top_category=&parent_category_rn=&storeId=10251. Many stores such as Myer in Sydney offer them.
In winter though I am more likely to be in stretch lycra leggings with a skirt or dress.

Tesla,
In the US:
Pantyhose are sheer nylons that are usually found in shades of nude, tan (yuck lol), white, ivory, black, off black and grey. They are very sheer.
Tights are thicker denier nylons that are opaque and you cannot see through them (for the most part). They come in every color of the rainbow and all different designs.
Where you live there all are called tights...but think of "pantyhose" as tights with a lighter (smaller) denier.
I love wearing tights, they keep my legs warm & since i've started wearing them the excema on my legs has almost completely cleared up, I think it's because irritants can't get to my skin.
As the others have said on here, quality counts.
Also before you put them on give your nails a quick going over with a file to reduce the chance of snags before you've even got them on (very annoying when it happens)
A friend advised that she always takes a spare pair in her handbag in case of a bad snag/ladder & she carries clear nail varnish so if she sees the beginnings of a ladder she can put a dab of nail varnish on it, she says that this stops the ladder getting worse but i've not had the chance to try this theory yet.
the clear nail varnish does work well. Although I never carried a spare pair of pantyhose. If they ripped or snagged i usually just go into the bathroom and throw em away.
But keeping a spare is a neat idea...although i think it would look odd keeping a spare pair of pantyhose in the purse lol

My friend carries her spare pair in her handbag, she suggested it when someone stood on my foot & destroyed the toes of my tights.
It's good to hear someone else say the nail varnish trick works, so far by the time I spot a ladder it's so big I would be wasting my time doing anything other than nipping to the bathroom to remove & dispose of them.
one day I may get lucky to catch one early enough to try this trick
Although I like nylon hose, I usually wear leggings for outdoor walking or exercise. When running, I do not wear short pants and expose the groin area. As all girls here wear short pants or miniskirt over the leggings, I also follow it.
Leggings are especially nice for me, as it helps preventing athlete's foot (I run nearly every day).
Today I walked at a scenery place with my family and guests while wearing leggings + short pants together first time in this fall. Yes. It is very comfortable to walk and run.
Barbie~~
I like hose and tights, I got these ones a while ago that had penguins on them! ;D but on my fat thighs sometimes they looked like witches. My bf said "no, your thighs are not fat" but I tell ya they looked like witches. Not penguins at all.
