In recent years transgender people have made huge strides in gaining visibility. However, there is still much work to be done in terms of mainstream society reaching a true understanding of the nuances of the many different kinds of transgender experiences. For instance, while many might be familiar with those individuals who transition from one end of the gender spectrum to the other, there are also those who are perfectly happy -- and intent on -- existing somewhere in the middle.
One of those people is Chris Tina Bruce, a personal trainer and bodybuilding competitor who is featured on National Geographic Channel's "Taboo" on Sunday night. Chris Tina recently made headlines as the first trans person to compete in a body building competition in San Diego. On "Taboo" she discusses the challenges of being trans -- especially as someone who is content to exist somewhat in between genders -- and we have a special clip of the show above.
Chris Tina was also kind enough to answer a few questions for The Huffington Post. Check out our interview below and make sure to tune in to National Geographic Channel's "Taboo: Changing Gender" this Sunday, September 30 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
Congratulations to one of our own Susans' members, ChrisTinaBruce. Can't wait to see the show!
Good for her! We don't tend to see many visible non-binary people in the media.
The site also has a slideshow, "20 Transgender Pioneers"...but I would be more impressed if they hadn't misspelled Lou Sullivan's name.
Really enjoyed watching the program with my family. Chris Tina did a wonderful job.
I also saw it. Good Job Chris Tina.
I thought she had posted here that she did go to Thailand for SRS, but that was after the show. I could be wrong.
I really want to watch this show!!!
I wonder if they would also make it an article on their magazine so that I can show folks here to get an idea on their reactions as well as help them learn and understand what we transfolk are going through
We watched it last night and thought they did a great job!
I was wondering if any of them were members here :)
Chris Tina seems like a nice person...would be fun to meet her one day :)
I watched it! Most of it, at least. Someone had posted it on ->-bleeped-<-, which I noticed about 10 minutes after it started. I liked it for the most part; there were a couple little nitpicky things I thought could have been done differently.
Good morning and thank you for the sweet comments about the Taboo episode. I am very lucky to have an amazing and support mom and sister who not only have been by my side as you can see she was willing to fly from Atlanta to San Diego for the filming.
We filmed this episode back in January and since that time I did go to Bangkok for SRS which I came to a point in my life that I wanted to continue on my path. It still does not change my perspective that being transgender does not define me and each of us should be proud of who we are regardless.
Again THANK YOU for all the wonderful messages and support from my sisters. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Wow! A lot has happened since January in your life! Congratulations :)
Your attitude and outlook on life is quite an inspiration for me (thank you), and it was so sweet to see your mother :) I wish my family would be that understanding!

Thank you Chris Tina for sharing your story and your personal progress in being your unique person. I am glad your family is so supportive as well.
Hi Chris Tina,
From way down under I hadn't heard of your very interesting and fascinating career and life.
Congratulations and love to you and your family

I managed to watch part of it before my PC crashed. Very interesting and inspiring ChrisTina, as I am moving away from the Binary too, to somewhere else. Not sure where yet but it is an interesting ride so far.
Karen.
