Title: Laptop or Tablet?
Post by: vivienne on October 01, 2012, 12:42:53 PM
Which is better for after srs? I'm guessing a tablet.. Just wanna make sure because I have a small notebook but I'd have to buy a tablet.

I can't for the life of me figure this one out, what does SRS and a laptop or tablet have to do with one or the other??

I figured that when recovering from srs a laptop on your lap isn't a very good idea?

Tablet. It was a month before my wife could use her giant laptop. Heck, I had to hold the tablet for her for the first 3 days. :) However, she was up to using my netbook sitting up for brief periods after a week, and since you'd have to actually *buy* a tablet... you could probably get by with a laptop small enough to balance on your chest (my netbook is ~2 lbs and I can easily hold it one-handed). You will WANT something to do/look at while dilating! Everyone in Brassard's residence was complaining about the boredom, and several envied her the tablet.

(For me, I brought my own tablet, netbook, 2 e-readers, a phone, and a dozen print books. Can you tell I don't like to be bored...)

do you get wifi in taiwan? Rather does it cost you an arm and a leg for such an amenity during your stay?  If I am paying $11k for SRS, a $200 tablet sounds like a good investment.

I'm going to Thailand Rita, Suporn, and from what I understand there is wifi at both the hospital and the hotel.

def a tablet.

BTW, nook is coming out with a Nook Tablet HD+ next month. More powerful than the I-Pad and 400 dollars cheaper...its more powerful than the new google tablet and cheaper too. If you haven't bought a tablet yet, it's worth looking into

I don't understand. Why does SRS make using a laptop harder?

I was able to do cartwheels 5 minutes after SRS. I would just buy the one that I preferred. Myself I would go with a laptop  ;)

Are you serious?

Not really, but I could have. I felt no pain and had full range of motion as soon as I woke up from SRS. I am not sure how normal that is

???

Five minutes after SRS I was still under anesthesia.

How were you able to do cartwheels with a catheter?

I mean 5 minutes after I woke up. I felt good. I didn't really do cartwheels because as you say I had a catheter and second I did not want to rip any stitches. I was aching to go for a nice long walk though. I was not allowed, but I felt well enough after surgery.

Ive worked in an electronics store for the last 4 years. I dont know what would be better for srs, but i would highly recommend waiting at least a month before you make your purchase. As all of the windows tablets and hybrid devices will be out on the market. Having had training on all of the tablet operating system, windows 8 is really the only intuitive tablet operating system, where you do not have to sacrifice any of the previous windows 7 functions. Its not just a browsing device like the ipad or the andriod. Its a fully functioning windows operating system. Most of these new devices will even run previous version windows programs.

All Microsoft have done is change the layout of windows 8 to fit tablet users who want to do everything a laptop can do, and then some.

So its basically not a huge ipod touch.

I assume its the heat under the laptop.  Those things get way too hot often to be on someones lap for extended periods, I  can only imagine out of surgery.

@Above windows RT won't have a normal desktop, but a windows 8 notebook will most likely be a hybrid but very expensive.

Well, I've never used my laptop on my lap. I always use it on a tray. Often, I set it on a wheeled table and work on it lying on my side in bed. There are trays you can buy for 20 or 30 bucks. Though a kindle or tablet might be even better if you could just hold it with one hand. Good luck with your surgery!

Heat? But can't you put it on a tray, or table (that table at the hospital that rolls under the bed), or cushion, or your belly, or...

I really don't understand why laptops and SRS don't go well together.

By the way, unless you're a very limited user of computers who just does browsing, reading, watching and a little bit of interacting, I wouldn't suggest buying a tablet. They're mostly just big smartphones, from what I've seen. Of course, I'd figure they're a bit more comfortable for reading and watching activities, but even then, is it really worth it? Unless you get the best of both worlds with one of the hybrid Windows 8 tablets like the Microsoft Surface that are to come, yeah, but then, I have a feeling you get less battery life/RAM/etc. for the same price than if you bought a laptop...
