Honey, I wasn't born a woman...

It is frequently said that sex sells. At the onset of the Nomad phone commercial (Controversial Cell Phone Commercial for Nomad (in HQ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92rENxHQ1f0#)), it seems like what the copywriters were going for. The centerpiece is the obviously attractive couple that is getting married. They then rush off to their honeymoon suite and take part in foreplay with the wife being thrown around and the husband being pleasured. This is the turning point in the commercial since the wife goes to the bathroom and the scene "falls apart" because she stands to pee, signifying that she has a penis.  The ad ends with the a quick picture of the phone and the phrase, "Le portable sans engagement," which translates to "The cell phone without a contract."

This ad makes the point that no one wants to be tied into contracts with problems; however, it also perpetuates stereotypes regarding women, transgenders, and marriage. The point that the wife is no longer desirable to the husband after he discovers her secret is bothersome considering the idea that many people marry for love. Marriage should not be based on the idea that your spouse is a sexual object that you can exploit.

If I went to a car dealer and he sold me on the idea of a certain sports car--red, with all leather trim, etc--and he assures me the car is quick and fast...so I bought the car and drove it home (driving nicely the whole way)...then I pop the hood and see a non-turbo'd 4 cylinder engine...

I'd take it back. There's no way in heck that a non-turbo 4 will do half the things the salesman promised, leather interior be damned.

"False advertising"...the TG in the commercial should have been honest with her groom before the vows. It has nothing to do with being a sex object...when you marry "a woman", you expect certain equipment down below; just like when you buy "a quick and fast car", you expect a certain form of engine (cubic inches, and/or turbo).

imho

Actually I was a little offended.

First of all,  they would not have gotten married without at least some kind of pre-nuptial foreplay.

Secondly, it is perpetuates the myth that we are all out to fool men.

And *that*, my dear, is why visual media needs to have some form of control over who gets to present it, and/or what ideas get to be on it.

For some really stupid reason(s), people tend to think that if they see it on TV, it must be true. The potential for abuse and control is just far too easy to allow totally unregulated access to picture media (movies, TV, etc).

But wait a moment...I'm sure Hollywood and Wall Street has our best interests in mind...

I'm with you this hon. It was one of the things that came up during my "therapy" during a moment of empathy... that I never would want to wish such a "moment" on a good man, never mind one finding it a good idea to MARRY me!
I'm a lovable and a nice person – but there are boundaries, and I respect them. Period.

I'm just not into 'false advertising' as you'd put it.
It just leaves me more sorry for the guy... just look at that face!
Now why would that be?  :embarrassed:

Thankfully I don't think we will see that here, but standards are slipping.

Not a fan of the first amendment in the Bill of Rights, I take it.

I sympathize with you on the problem though I can't get on board with the proposed "solution". Cracked did a great article on the problem.

I honestly don't know whether to feel offended or sorry for the guy.

I feel sorry for the guy, but I also feel very annoyed and offended that it potray transgender women in the wrong manner.

And there are a lot of i****s out there who think anything on the TV, is the absolute truth.

Anyways I am supprised, that they even allowed an ad like that on TV.

Well, on rewatching the spot, it looks like he had a *really* good time, at least until his discovery. Hard to feel too sorry for him. I mean if she can do that every time, he might learn to overlook...

The First Amendment (and most of the Bill of Rights) was written 220+ years ago. Today's technologies, including movies, "documentaries", television, etc are far more powerful effective in influencing people and their thoughts. (Cracked specializes in satire--hardly a good resource in learning about media influence)

Very few people are capable of filtering out the effects of "mass media"...and even they are subject to it, when the message aligns with their own particular prejudices and views.

I note the problem. I do not have a workable solution....but, to quote (or mis-quote, I'm not sure) the addiction philosophy: the first step to fixing a problem, is realizing there is a problem.

Well she was obviously pre-op, now if she was post-op and peeing sitting down, well that would be a different matter, big difference in having a penis and having a vagina, being pre-op you just can hide behind a penis, thats obvious I would have thought.

I thought -and I may have been wrong in my assumption- that all preOp pee siting. I for one have been peeing siting for as long as I can remember!

the questions is then,  of how many of us pee standing up?

I don't stand up either. Even then, I've known cisgender females to "squat" before. Easily, this commercial is just the fantasy of some narrow minded cisgender male.

Maybe it's all a misunderstanding? Perhaps she was using a funnel or something because she has germaphobia and can't sit on a hotel toilet, making the guy regret marrying her because she will forever be super anal about making sure everything is as close to sterile as possible.

Then again, that may be too complicated.  ::)

lol ... although I think I've seen a similar ad for a funnel that allows women to pee standing up, where the only difference between the two is that later in the ad she smiles and then the funnel is shown in the ad.

I've forgotten the correct term for the funnel as well as what was its manufacturer as it was a long time ago.
