Alek Wilczek suffered from deep depression for as long as he could remember.

That depression led to a sense of hopelessness and eventually self-destructive behavior.

That was until Alek, born Karlyn, came to terms with what made him different — he is a transgender man.

Saylorsburg native Wilczek is a 20-year-old student at Northampton Community College.

Born with the soul of a male, but with female sex organs, Wilczek's parents raised him as a female.

That discrepancy tormented Wilczek as a young woman coming of age. And it took a chance discovery on a visit with his sister to put it all together.
