Roseanne Barr, the well-known comedian and actress from the popular 90′s show Roseanne is presently running for President of the United States at the head of the Peace and Justice Party. Roseanne originally ran for the nomination as a member of the Green Party, but eventually lost to the present candidate, Jill Stein.
Late last night, Roseanne wrote a few tweets challenging her former opponent for the Green Party nomination on several issues. One of the issues that came up was Jill Stein's stance in favor of trans rights (which she discusses a bit in an interview here), which was challenged in a tweet by one @ATagonist (who's twitter account has since been suspended). She tweeted:
Jill is also in favor of letting men [sic.] into spaces where young girls get changed
followed by a link to a recent local news story out of Olympia, Washington about a trans woman who, like any woman, was using the women's locker room to change at a local swim facility. Two girls from a high school swim team who also use the pool complained about sharing the facilities with a trans woman, with the result that the swim team has now been asked to use a separate locker room.
A couple of points need to be made about this story right from the start.

I'm sorry, but I actually feel there's a valid point to be raised there :/
Wow, Roseanne Barr sure knows how to make herself popular, even one of the young ladies admitted that the trans woman in question did not bother them:
QuoteIndeed, at this point, let's take a moment to review that comment that one of the girls from the swim team actually said for herself in defense of the trans woman in Olympia:
I am a captain of the swim team at Capital High School (one of the swim teams that practices at the college) I personally do not have any issue with the woman being in our locker room so to generalize that the "girls are uncomfortable" is not true. I feel this woman has just as much of a right to be there than anyone else and am annoyed how out of control this has gotten.
I've been trying to find some information on this woman. Other than that she's some minor US TV personality who seems to be involved in US politics, I can't.
She's on Twitter, but she simply tells people to ' read the article'. She apparently has a web site www.roseanneforpresident20121 (http://www.roseanneforpresident20121) but it's a dead link. Or perhaps it's blocked in my country!
Best wished to our US brothers and sisters. Not sure how important this person is.

Its not that big of a deal.
She was a big TV personality decades ago but now she is just trying to scrape up what attention she can like most washed up celebrities.
I've never put much stock in celebrities opinions anyways, they are just people who have a talent that landed them a job that pays a lot and gets them a lot of attention, it doesn't make their opinions carry any more worth than a homeless man on the street.
And to think at one time I actually liked Roseanne. Admittedly, that was a long time ago. Now she is just sad.
I blame it all on Ronald Regan. He played the role of president so well that now any washed up actor thinks they can be politicians.
Yeah, she's pretty much a has been
When I'd heard she was running for President I thought it was just another one of her stunts to try and revive her acting career
She always appealed to me as a woman with the poisonality of a sow with an extra big foot shaped mouth. I've always thought that if you can't say something reasonably nice it's best not to say anything at all, and since I don't want to emulate her I probably shouldn't have even said this! ;D
Running for President on the Peace and Freedom Party is not being in politics, it's far more a comedy gig.
Whatever, I still like her. Those tweets against her are totally exaggerated and rude.

That's the way it should be but that's not the way it is. Other people do put stock in what celebrities say. They pay more attention to what they have to say. They use those opinions to validate their own opinions, etc. This is in the news and being repeated everywhere because it's a celebrity saying these things.
The last I heard (was it here?) was she is for mandatory reversible vasectomies on infant boys to prevent unwanted pregnancies. That's just absolutely crazy.
All that said, I don't think anyone's taking her that seriously, but hearing her say the transphobic things will be validating for certain bigots out there.
