Transgender is an umbrella term for anyone whose internal gender identity doesn't match their sex at birth.

Transsexual is someone whose gender identity is exactly opposite to their birth sex, leading them to transition to living as that sex.

These days, transsexual is used to refer to someone whose gender dysphoria leads them to intervene with hormones and surgery to change their primary or secondary sexual characteristics (breasts, genitalia, etc.)

Depends on who's defining primary/secondary. Opinions differ widely as to the scope of "transsexual", so I was covering as many of the bases as possible.

But if you meant hormones/surgery, then yes, to some extent and/or too.

Yeah I was referring to the hormones and surgery part.

I personally agree with you there, though you will find that many people limit their definition of transsexual to transition involving surgery.

There's no one universally accepted definition of either term.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if "transexual" was defined by surgery or just "medical treatment of gender dysphoria".

Sadly, it depends who you ask ::).

I don't like the word myself - but since it's in such common usage, I tend to think of it as meaning "someone whose gender dysphoria leads them to want to change their anatomy away from their current sexual characteristics, via hormones and/or surgery." This is a bit wordy, but it includes people who are transsexual but non-binary, and doesn't assume "from this gender to that gender".
