A JAIL is allowing a male prisoner to dress as a woman... and order dresses and bras from Argos.
The prisoner orders items from the store's catalogue and other mail order firms and pays with his own money.
The pre-op transsexual, who was jailed for sex offences, wears his hair in pigtails and must be called "Miss" by staff, who can be disciplined if they refuse.
He is housed in all-male Albany Prison on the Isle of Wight, which holds sex offenders. A source said: "The fact he's allowed to wear women's clothes and have pigtails takes the mick. Staff and inmates aren't happy. It's a joke."
Don't they force prisoners to wear orange jumpsuits or something?
No. Most prisoners in the UK and all women inmates, wear their own clothes. They have quite a lot of their identity encouraged. The loss of freedom is seen to be the objective.
Personally, If I were to be locked up in a jail cell for years, I think I'd take the least amount of personal stuff. I wouldn't want to think about what I'd thrown away.
Albany prison houses very long term inmates, most of whom, but not all, have little outside contact. It does house sex offenders as do all jails, where appropriate. But that is not its purpose at all.
