Sis I forgot the festive iron branding season. You are now the Mistress of the Festival Iron, first in first user. Feel free. Use your powers freely and with great pain and fun.
I hear and I can't tell anyone so keep it quiet but CS has a new bikini and is going to the beach this weekend. She may need a 'hello sailor' brand to attract the life guards when they are stunned by her beauty.
Don't let anyone know I told you.

I think Christmas is a lot like Transgender. People who've never experienced it can't understand it.
I wasn't raised in a Christian house and the entire phenomenon baffles me. I can't begin to comprehend why Christian people go through so much effort and experience so much exhaustion just to be festive.
Must be the same thing cis people wonder when they see us doing electroloysis/hormones/surgery etc.

Actually 'Ag' I was alluding to Ebenezer Scrooge in Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". Scrooge's standard reply to anything he does not like is "Bah! Humbug!!" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebenezer_Scrooge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebenezer_Scrooge)
Christmas here is less about presents (kids are older now) and more about parties and food and so on, but we try to stay very relaxed...
It should be Christmas Time every day of the year!
I actually celebrate Christmas in July as well.
I celebrate it because Its the day people picked to recognize the birth of Christ, yes it is a blend of pagan things and commercialized things but i don't care i like everything about the Holidays.
Yay!! Christmas!
One of my favorite things is my son and I go and get a new ornament for our tree, every year. We spend the whole day finding the perfect ornament.
I also love watching peoples faces as they open up the gifts I got them. Seeing their eyes light up and a huge smile go across their face makes me the happiest girl in the world.
I celebrate it because Its the day people picked to recognize the birth of Christ,
And those people would be?...Idiots? Because, if this happened like the account suggests (the 4 Gospels), then we do know exactly when it happened - A decree went forth from Caesar Augustus & all, and if the Romans were nothing else, they were meticulous about records - or at least in the ball park. And it ain't December, or July.
Well as usual (it's one of my new traditions) I'll head off to Vegas for some R&R before the actual holiday and the 'hell week' that follows it. Things stay pretty calm from early December to the 26th, then it's prep for all the NYE shows and festivities. So taking off before Xmas makes sense. Doing Mandalay Bay this year, hell of a deal and all, and I can't wait to spend some quality time on the outdoor balcony of the bar on the 65th floor. And its' currently a toss up as to which Cirque show we'll be attending ("Love" (the Beatle's one) or "Zoomanity" (the sexual one)) - we, and by 'we' I mean my GF, have not done one of the Cirque shows yet (in the past I took her to a big magic show and a traditional Vegas floor show). I guess I'll have to make up my mind this week as I'd want something hot and sensual to wear to Zoomanity, but I'd want to flying all my freak flags and finest psychedelic clothing if I went to Love.
And - as always, but not the last two years - I'm hoping for a clear, bright Xmas morning so I can participate in The Apocalypse Project. It's were a bunch of photographers get up at dawn in their respective towns and photograph the city/town with nothing moving. I always ride Xmas afternoon, rain or shine.
But it's always a no drama day, all that other stuff, that huge deal about expectations, disappointment, family crap and all - that only happens when you buy into it, and you don't have to.
I really would appreciate it if you would stop bashing people tekla, i felt like you were calling me an idiot as well just because I choose to celebrate that event on a certain day.
We all know Christ wasn't born on Christmas day, but that is the day that was choosen to celebrate His birth.
Let's be careful calling people idiots.
I celebrate Christmas in 2 distinct ways.
First, there is the religious holiday which is about Peace, Joy, Hope, and Love. It is a solemn but joyous thing.
Second, there is cultural holiday which is (for me) about my family and making them happy.
And for the record, only 2 of the 4 Gospels describe Jesus' birth.
I also love the music this time of year. Both the religious, and the commercialized. I think it is all good. It's just so cheary! ;D
Especially the music!
I love those commercials!! They are so cute!
even though I had lots of hell growing up as a kid, my fondest memories of Christmas was actually the specials on cbs of ruldoplh and frosty, these cartoons brought tears to my eyes and much joy. I still watch them to this day.

I completely cover the inside of my condo with lights and other decorations.
Last year I was moving around Christmas time so I didn't decorate. I still don't have anything, and I usually don't start decorating until after Advent starts anyway.
My apartment is a bit small, so I was thinking of getting one of those Christmas tree flags and just hanging it on a wall.
We'll probably drag our stuff down from the attic in a day, or so... Mostly just the tree and stockings - we don't put up any outdoor decorations or lights...
Then pictures of the cats, and a picture of the dog with something Christmasy strapped to his head - and it's a wrap!
Today I put the computer by the piano and set up the microphones and recorded The Rebel Jesus by Jackson Browne. BEST CHRISTMAS SONG EVER!
One of these years I'm gonna have a sloth Christmas tree ornament that clings to a branch.

This particular astronomer needs to get her finger out and fix up the mount on her 10" Dobsonion. Maybe over the Xmas break....?
As for "Scrooge" I always liked most of the Bill Murray version (Scrooged) though I find the ending very weak and OTT. The main sequences are brilliant especially the Ghost of Xmas Present.

Dobsonian is a dirty word around here! I do have a 10" scope, but on a GEM plus two cameras! That mount had been fixed years ago and has been used this past summer. My friends have Dobs, I look through their scopes and they get to see my images!
An old one with the Teflon/Ebony Star bearings? Got the right amount of "sticktion"?

I live on the outskirts of city and have well 'developed' gardens around me. I need a scope I can move easily and that is light because I no longer have the strength to move the old mount so I made my own, but I need to finish the mount. It is f/5.5 and on low power I get down to 13th mag with a 0.6 deg field. Good for variables, the moon and planet gazing. DSOs are not that good round here even with narrow band filters.

In my case, steel bearings with worm screws to lock and adjust. Its only a dobber....
What should we buy as a basic to look at planets type telescope?

Most small telescope sold in dept stores and the like are junk with a meniscus lens and a wobbly mount. Most amateur astronomers use reflecting telescopes because they are considerably cheaper for a given size, but they are harder to maintain and operate than a refractor (has lenses rather than mirrors). Unfortunately refractors are more expensive because a really good lens is far harder to make than a really good mirror.
There are also "mixed" optical systems and they can be really good for general astronomical use, so here are some links
For a refractor, no less than 3" lens, preferably a 4" lens http://store.meade.com/terrastar-90-altazimuth-refractor.html (http://store.meade.com/terrastar-90-altazimuth-refractor.html)
For a portable "mixed" catadioptric system, something like a Celestron or Meade but these are not cheap http://store.meade.com/lx80-schmidt-cassegrain-6-f-10-with-multi-mount.html (http://store.meade.com/lx80-schmidt-cassegrain-6-f-10-with-multi-mount.html)
Bev,
I was just teasing about that scope. That 10" of mine was a old Meade DS-10 I bought new. It does not resemble the Meade I bought since I modified the mount with a larger drive gear, the new mirror cell, new sonotube with three 1/8" thick aluminum rolled sheet armatures to hold the mirror cell and the focuser. The middle armature inside the paper sonotube is the hard point for the mount cradle and the counterweight bracket.
The secondary mirror mount was a straight bar across the inside the tube, the new one a regular spider. This improves the roundness of the star image. The old bar produced two diffraction spikes on bright stars and made the dimmer stars ovate. A regular 4 vane spider produces 4 spikes and the stars appear more rounder.
The drive corrector was of a "Muntz" design, so I gutted out the cheap electronics after it stripped out the gears in a motor by overheating it and I made a new circuit with an additional autoguider port.
The Ebony Star was a textured Formica glued on surface used in the bearing with Teflon blocks as the other surface in a Dob mount. This was used by the do-it-your-selfers (ATMs or Amateur Telescope Makers) to make their own. These surfaces were on the older manufactured scopes until the Ebony Star surface was no longer manufactured. Various other bearing surfaces have been used since.
Cindy,
A Dob in the 6" to 8" range is a good beginner scope. They are cheaper and easy to break down and transport. If you can find a telescope shop, buy it from them. They are likely have good used scopes on sale as well at a reduced price. They can even teach you how to align and use it. An astronomy club may also help you. My club has a "Beginners's corner" for teaching the newbies how to use them. They can even get you to get that cheap scope to work, otherwise you might have to get another one if it is junk.
We have Open Houses with the various scopes and binoculars on the lawn owned by the members. You can choose what type of scope from the variety of scopes being used. We also have an Open House in January titled "How to use your telescope". The public would come in and we do a free alignment and give advice on how to use it properly. Keep away from the internet and the big box stores on these.
Joelene
Well, I love, love , love Christmas. Because
I work every day of year except Thanksgiving Easter and Christmas. So it is a wonderful day off. We always have friends and family over on Christmas eve. I have more than my share of eggnog and other spirits. I spend the whole day doing nothing and it's great.
I also love giving presents, singing Christmas carols (out of key), watching Christmas movies ( fav is Scrooge played by Alister cook in black and white and miracle on 34th st also in black and white) I don't know why they have to colorize old movies. And lastly it is the only day of the year I want it to snow.

Quote from: Cindy James on November 29, 2012, 03:14:38 AMAre you going to be alone?
No, I'm going back home. I'm going shopping with my sister, mother and father on separate days and I'm saving money to be able to buy them some things. I love taking time and buying them little things that mean a lot. I used to write them letters just telling them how much they mean to me but the last time I did that, like right after transition, no one said anything to me about the letters, I think they were pretty emotional, so I stopped doing it. I don't know how it made them feel.
We're having a Christmas cookie party this year too! I'm so excited! We invite the whole extended family over (we have a huge family) and we have little cookie menus and everyone eats cookies, visits and has hot chocolate. It's so much fun.

For many years we had a three foot fake tree that was so realistic, it shed. By the end of its days it was nearly a Charlie Brown tree.
Our very first tree was something my son made in preschool. We had a very small apartment back then and really couldn't afford a tree. But his class took pine cones, painted them green, and glued them into Styrofoam cups. There was even a little puff-ball thing on the top as a star, and it had been sprinkled with glitter before the paint dried.

We got this tree for $20 about 9 years ago. While in the military we did not make enough to afford a real tree. It has done very good for $20.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER,
by Madeline B
12/2/2012
I'm working sixty hours a week
without any extra pay
The work load is enormous
and gets greater ever day
My little birdie done left me
and is freezing in some tree
When I should be cleaning
I sit here frozen with PTSD
I'm married to my best friend
but we'll be unmarried soon
I promised her the sun and stars
but became her feminine moon
Most of my friends are busy
and live oh so far from here
I see them on the internets
and they give me welcome cheer
I could just get in the car
and go see them of course
though I'll probably lose it
when I get the divorce
I've still got parts I do not like
and other parts that are new
I would put the cart before the horse
but my horse transitioned too
I'm still a little thin on top
ok, I'm a bald chick
And my middle isn't thin at all
its positively thick
So why is this without a doubt
the best Christmas ever by far?
It's not because I'm filled with joy;
my heart feels like one big scar.
It's not because my life is perfect;
I can point out all the flaws.
And I don't expect great presents,
or even a visit from Santa Claus.
But I've received a better gift
than was ever beneath a tree--
I've lost an awful lot this year,
but what I have gained IS ME.
For this, I am so grateful.
My heart at last is free.
All holiday trimmings are optional.
I love myself, you see.
Oh Maddie...that is beautiful! That is definitely the BEST gift of all! To bee yourself!
*hugs*

I don't celebrate Christmas since I'm an atheist. :P However, I would still like to see my dad.
Loved the Christmas poem Madeline. Awesome.
Yes, nicely done, Madeline! Hugs, Devlyn
Call me a Scrooge, but I can't wait for mulchfest! People gather old Christmas trees, and then we get to throw them in a wood chipper and spread the mulch around the public parks! ;D :) :D   :eusa_dance: :eusa_clap: :icon_biggrin: :icon_bumdance-nerd: :icon_geekdance: :icon_dance: :icon_clap: :icon_joy: :icon_razz:  :icon_woowoo: :icon_yes:
Sorry about all of the emoticons, but I'm overflowing with my own demented version of Christmas spirit. >:-)

That's why I'm choosing to celebrate the new Doctor Who companion :D
I just sent out that poem as my Christmas message to my family members (of the genetic kind) and added the following verse:
I feel great, and grateful too
that I get to share my life and days
with a most amazing family
that I love in so many ways.
This of course applies equally to my family here at Susan's.
DOWNER ALERT...
OK, I hate, detest and loathe Christmas. I dislike feeling obligated to send & receive gifts; it makes me very anxious. But the real reason why I hate it is... Christmas 1994. My mother had been suffering from breast cancer for 8 years and had just come out of hospital, where it was patently obvious that she was on her last legs. Heck, the nurses were being very sweet to her... and they're never sweet to you unless you're about to kick the bucket.
Knowing that she'd probably never see Christmas again, she decided that she didn't want to put up a Christmas tree because it would be too painful for her to see it. My youngest brother was 11 at the time so I decided to make some concessions for him. I bought two pieces of tinsel in my mother's favourite colour, draped them around a pot plant, and stuck his presents under that. Ever since then, Christmas has been tinged with sadness because I associate it with losing my mother.
She died less than a month later, aged just 48.
Christmas (and January) is my least favourite time of the year and to be honest, I can't wait until it all just goes away. Roll on February!
(Then again... February is my soon-to-be-ex wedding anniversary, so I'll soon be saying 'roll on March!')
Bah! Humbug!
One of our pals got Himself the Avengers movie. It was possibly the most consciously self-referential movie I've ever seen outside of spoofs.
And there wasn't nearly enough Mark Ruffalo.
My folks have gotten us a shower curtain, and given us money towards our new swordfighting gloves.
Himself has gotten me a ruby Trollbead, and for him, I backed a Kickstarter for a cool art book that I think he'll like.

So sorry you lost your Mom, FTM. Any time of year, at any age, that's as big a heartache as they come. You have a lifetime pass for skipping Christmas, no humbug involved, if you need to.
I don't know if this would help any, since in our culture we're taught to mourn quietly for a short period and then pretend for the rest of our life like our heart is not broken, but my experience is that other cultures know how to handle grief, loss of family, and the holidays with greater wisdom and compassion than ours does.
When I was in Korea for two years, I was fortunate enough to spend all of their holidays with local families and to participate in their traditions and rituals. One thing I found marvelous was that they do not lock away memory of those they have lost, or pretend not to think about their losses on the traditional days for families to gather. Instead, wherever they are, with family or observing alone, they will set out a plate or a glass with their loved ones favorite food or spirit, and turn to the empty seat, and offer their blessings, thanks, and wishes to their loved one. You can feel the love as the living hold each other and remember with tears and hugs the departed. Only then, when the departed have been honored and invited to participate fully in the festivities, and any grief expressed, do the happy times proceed, often while discussing without embarrassment anecdotes or memories from the life of the one in the "empty" seat that doesn't feel empty any more.
Much love this season and always. You do not grieve alone.
Thanks Madeline! That's a very heartwarming story - what a wonderful way to remember their loved ones. :)
My brothers & I tend to do little things on Mum's birthday every year (which just happens to be halfway between Christmas and the anniversary of her death). On what would've been her 60th birthday, my elder brother & I each published long blog posts about our fondest memories of her, which was really great because we reminded each other of things we'd forgotten.
Despite how I feel about the season, I've always made a huge effort to make it a special day for my kids. And I must be doing something right, because it's their favourite holiday. ;)

I'm glad you and your brothers are able to do that. :)
I get a good picture thinking of you and your kids in the middle of a happy Christmas hullaballoo. :)
Hi,
Yes it is christmas again, and I think I am starting to dislike it, One truly way I miss
it,is my wife whom I miss so much, with out her it does not mean that much to me.
They say time heals, that it is a bounch of bull, time never heals/ Sometimes I think
is it all worth it. I really believe that the only thing that keeps me going is my
kids, and grandson, maybe it is the hormones I do not know, but I hate living
this way.
But to everyone out there, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year]
Hugs, Janis

Oh, you've got that right. I was always the one sat on the floor for hours, trying to get the latest Barbie out of its packaging for my eldest. ;)
What a weekend. All the shops full of people, mostly with screaming kids in tow, and strollers as far as the eyes can see!
Get me out of this... Humbug.
Most with their heads down looking at the darn phones, not looking where they are going and going at half pace and getting in others way.
Annoying Xmas carols blaring over the speakers in the shops and it's 100 degrees outside as I fight my way to the next shop.
The smell of flesh burning as I brand myself Bah Humbug. :icon_flamed:
People not waiting their turn to be served and pushing in.
Not enough staff to serve.
Items your looking for sold out
Steam rising from my ears in frustration.
The smell of flesh burning again as I brand myself Bah Humbug. :icon_flamed: :icon_flamed:
Food places packed and nowhere to sit. More steam rising.
Idea!
Go to work and shop from there as it's close by.
Pressure easing, people dissipating.
Shopping done on line, no crowds, no waiting.
Feel much better.
Still there is the smell of freshly burnt flesh
Humbug to one and all.
Thanks that Xmas only is once a year.
I'll be alone, no big surprise, guess I'm easy to forget about
I'm alone as well so I won't forget about you.
I'll have the branding iron nice an hot for us both.
It will be an xmas burnt into your memory.
Love J
So Jenny sings:
"All I want for Christmas is a bright knew brand."
I avoided the major shopping Malls. The smaller ones were quiet and peaceful.
The nursing home my wife is in, had Santa to visit the kiddies of relatives. I took my wife to see him. She was stoked and had their picture taken together.
So far so good.
Hugs Jenny
