Title: Avoiding potassium
Post by: Hikari on December 06, 2012, 12:10:02 PM
I have noticed that really the primary drawback to Spiro seems to be that potassium can Build up causing all kinds of problems. But how do you avoid it? It seems to be in everything I eat, particularly the brand of Greek yogurt I enjoy.

So do any of you on Spiro activity avoid potassium, or do you continue on as before as far as your diet?

I was told by my doctor that since my labs and kidneys are fine I wouldn't be able to eat enough to cause a problem. Please discuss it with your physician to see if you would have any issues.

My doctor instructed me not to eat an excessive amount, but since I am healthy I don't have to avoid it too much. Basically, I just don't eat a banana every morning.

You don't have to avoid it entirely, just learn what the real high potassium foods are and limit your intake of those. And for sure, drink plenty of water as spiro is a diuretic. You may get cravings for salty stuff too.

Like others said, simply avoid high potassium food like bananas and do NOT use salt substitute! That stuff is VERY high in potassium! When you are grocery shopping just look at lables, I changed the kind of chips I eat to try to limit my intake. Just use some common sense.
