In August 2008 I started writing a queer young adult novel. I'd recently taken to reading such books and found them absolutely fascinating. They gave me a vicarious experience as I was pretty much unaware of my gender identity and affection orientation back then.
Most of these books revolved around gay youths. While I could relate in a way, they missed the mark for me. Seeing that there wasn't much about bisexual youths, I decided to try to correct that lack.
Through the self-publishing service iUniverse, I have published my first young adult novel.
I still, however, consider writing to be a hobby. Queer YA is not the most lucrative genre so it's unlikely I'll be able to quit my day job and just write. But even if I could, I would still consider myself to be an amateur in the original sense of the word. I write for the love of it. If I break even on my investment in this process, great. If I make a profit, that will be amazing.
But my goal was to get the story out there. I as an adult derived much assistance from reading works of queer YA fiction. So I hope that maybe there might be someone out there who will find the story I've written to be helpful.
That's why I write.
That is so great! Congratulations! What is the title of your book? Are you going to be trying to sell it in any stores, or on line?
Thanks, Brooke!
The book is called Waking for Hours and it's available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iUniverse.
Heh, when I was in high school I wanted to right SciFi and fantasy. Now, I find myself writing what are in essence queer young adult novels with some romance themes.
Thank you for sharing! When the writing muse calls, I'm glad you pick up the phone and talk to hir.
Congrats!
I ordered a copy and it arrived today. I haven't had a chance to start it yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how you write. I'm immensely proud of you just for doing it. Hugs, Devlyn
Thanks, Dev!
