I was supposed to change my name and gender on my ID before January, but that's not going to happen now because my family failed to be able to give me the money in time needed for everything (about $350 in my state :O). College starts January 11... and there is no way that I will be able to do everything before then. I can't enter college with my female name (not to mention it is an EXTREMELY old-fashioned name that only today's kids' grandparents or great grandparents have...ugh).
If I go to college with my current name and gender, will it permanently be on my records when I transfer to a 4 year university? Has anyone had anything to deal with like this?
I graduated high school during the middle of my junior year, but now I am 18, and I feel like I wasted so much time...I can't continue waiting...yet, at the same time, I never, ever want anyone to know I was anything other than a male my entire life.
My name change just went through right when the semester ended so this semester was pretty awkward for me in regards to my highly feminine previous legal name. You can easily change your current name by bringing a court order name change documentation to the registrar's office.
When filling out applications to transfer to a 4 year university, you can check the male box as your gender if that is what you prefer. I was worried about the gender thing on the application just because of the college checking with social security but there was a law passed a few years ago so now colleges can't do that. I filled out my applications as my new name except for one, but I did mark male as my gender on all applications.
Before doing this, my lawyer called each school just to make sure of their policies for me in case there would be any trouble, so what I did wasn't illegal. I will easily be able to change the name on my records at the college I applied to with my previous legal name just by mailing a copy of the court order form. I don't think you have anything to be worried about.
You can also email your professors before school starts in January and just tell them you are in the process of changing your name for legal and personal reasons and that you would prefer to be called by a different name that isn't in the school's system and I'm sure they would accommodate you.
