That's quite a shame... before they were taught that it was immoral, "two-spirited" individuals were largely accepted and respected.
Racism and transphobia have been a double whammy to people of color. This must be take into account and needs to be at the top of activists' priorities because the vast majority of transgender people harassed, bulied, attacked, and murdered are people of color.
I have Native American ancestry and what they have gone through is an atrocity.
Agreed it's not surprising... there's an enormous amount of not so well known prejudice against both first nation people and trans people. The fact that most people don't know about it lets it fly under the radar and helps it grow.
It doesn't 'help that first nation people tend to be poorer, the legacy of colonialism. So we have race, class, and gender oppression/discrimination all coinciding.
