Title: I came out to my son - and it went wonderfully!
Post by: HthrRsln on December 29, 2012, 10:47:04 PM
I finally found the nerve to come out to my youngest son today. I was terrified that he would hate me, or not want to have anything to do with me. I didn't really believe those things about him, but I wanted to be prepared for the worst case.

As it is he has been every bit the loving, compassionate, and understanding young man that I hoped and prayed he would be. He was so wonderful about it that I was nearly speechless. He understands completely, and is only concerned for my well being, and how transition will go for me. I am so proud and humble to be his parent that I could just burst! (tears welling up)    :)

He's the younger of two in his early 20s, a junior in college. I still need to talk with the oldest and my daughter-in-law. They live a few hours away, so I don't see them as often, and that is really all the immediate family that matters. My parents are both passed away. No siblings to speak of. Some close friends that can wait till I get closer to full time.

I am just so proud of how well he has taken it and how wonderful he has been to me. He really cares about how I am, and tells me he loves me, wants to know I will be okay. He's going to spend an hour with my gender therapist this week just on principle, to meet her, and I thought in case he has some questions he doesn't want to ask me.

That's just simple... Love.

You made me happy!

Delayed public congrats, now that I've followed you here. Note to others: I really am not stalking Heather at all... she invited me.  ;)

My self-introduction will be coming once I've had some sleep.

Hi RthrRsin,

Glad to hear the good news. Not wishing to rain on your parade, in a realistic environment, some people experience those they tell may back flip at some time later in the process.

How this occurs is multi factored. I hope in your case, he remains in his current state of mind over the matter. I really just needed to flag a possible issue later down the track. My eldest has back flipped, but he's still working on it.

I understand.

Not going to dwell on it, but I know it's a possibility. Wouldn't be like him.

He helped me pick a real-life name last night and was sort of into it..

He spent an hour with my GT yesterday, and has her card if he ever wants to talk with her.

I have a theory that the better I do, the better others will do.

I'm so happy for you. It is so wonderful to hear about how accepting and loving our children can be.

I have a theory that the better I do, the better others will do.

That is EVER so true. If self esteem, confidence and attitude exude from ever pore in you skin, people will appreciate and admire your commitment, irrespective of their own personal belief.

That has been proven beyond a shadow of doubt by may here alone.

Keep living and growing.

So, yesterday afternoon, and this morning were simply glorious! I finally was able to create the opportunity to come out to my older son and his wife and they were also absolutely fabulous! Every bit as wonderful as my younger son. They love me and support my transitioning, and were clearly excited for me. My daughter-in-law says she would love to help me with hair and makeup, and go clothes shopping with me.

We fixed a great dinner last night of spaghetti with Italian Sausage and fresh pressed garlic, then we went out to favorite night club for some live music, went out to the patio where we could talk some more. They both read some of my creative writing on my blog, and we talked about transition. They TOTALLY get this. It is so exciting.

I fixed breakfast this morning en femme, and we watched some trans videos together, including Lana Wachowski's HRC award acceptance speech, and selections by Jessica Tiffany, Meghan's Life, and part of I am Jazz.

How blessed am I? Both grown sons and a daughter-in-law that support my transition and are just amazing! I am deliriously happy!

We often say that you have to be prepared to lose everyone, and my heart breaks for those who do, but I am here to say it doesn't always have to be that bad.

Cheers all!

Wonderful to hear another landmark has been passed without any of the terrible incidents you might have imagined!
