Title: See my mom uses blue eye shadow
Post by: Shawn Sunshine on January 05, 2013, 09:49:13 PM
I don't know why people are saying blue eye shadow is not in anymore. I think it looks great I mean my mom uses it all the time and "yes" she uses it during the day. So why all the fuss about blue eye shadow?

Here is my mom who is in her 60s and I think she looks great!

Wear whatever shade of eye shadow you like, Sunshine. :)

I don't think there is a problem with blue eye shadow. Heck, I love wearing mine. I use blue/purple on a daily basis. The thing is, a lot of people over do it. There is a point that you go from having nice eyeshadow to over-caked Mimi from Drew Carey look. You just have to be using it right. That is my 2 cents

Well, opinions vary. Pretty much every make-up expert I have heard from, however, has the opinion that blue eyeshadow is something that shouldn't ever be worn, unless you're dressing up into something special for Halloween or a carnival. And I sort of agree with them.

I think your mom looks great -despite- the blue eyeshadow, not -with- it.

But in the end, if everyone did only what is generally considered okay, the world would be a bit boring, wouldn't it? If you really want to wear blue eyeshadow and don't need the approval of people, do it.

I've always liked a light bluey silvery one I have, looks pretty good when blended with darker shade imo.

Whatever you like and think looks good, it's just your style afterall  ;D

Some people feel like they need to really blend in and stick with what's usual, but as long as it's age appropriate I see no problem. And when your young, you can get away with a lot  :P

no one wears blue eyeshadow like that unless they r in photoshoots cause on a regular day basis it can look a bit drag queenish. blue eyeshadow looks best wen its only appied on the top lid  and a tiny bit on the bottom with black eyeliner on the top lid and the top and bottom waterline. pretty much how kim kardashians has her eyes done in this picture.

Actually my sister in law wears blue eyeshadow to work... but sometimes I question her makeup artistry :P And I agree with you on the best way to apply it.

Pretty sure the phobia about blue eyeshadow came from just this ad campaign. It lasted into the 90s, but you don't hear it expressed as a hard and fast rule any more. Even my ex, who's pretty phobic about looking like a drag queen (as long as you don't count her penchant for gold lame) seems to think blue eyeshadow is just fine these days, as long as you don't go for the racoon or headlights sort of look with it.

A lot also depends on the shade. You don't see much of that light, greenish-blue shade anymore, do you? That color really looks more like it belongs in an appliance ad, or one for family sedans that get 12 miles to the gallon.

It's a choice thing.I wouldn't wear it but I was given loads of the stuff for free when I came out.Girls off loaded all their old make up on me and there was a lot of blue.Never wear it if you have red hair!I never thought of it as an appliance or car colour but there was a Plymouth Fury in that light blue I used to see a lot when I was at school

I'm not partial to eye-shadow, myself. I have rather deep-set eyes, so there's a lot of "shadow" there already (ha-ha). I prefer a more plain look.

I guess it's just me. I have one of those Kitchenaid stand mixers with the enamel coating. Mine is the standard white model, but I always wanted one in one of those cute pastel colors they offer from time to time.

Something like:

It depends on how deep-set they are, but a lighter shade of eyeshadow can actually help with that issue a little bit. Very true that those of us with significant brow bossing are best off avoiding the darker shades, except in moderation. I really need to be wearing contacts more, myself. My extreme prescription tends to make my eyes look very tiny, when with contacts they aren't nearly so bad.

Well it would really depend on how it's applied and if it suits a person's personality.

Blue is probably one of the most difficult colours to get right for makeup.

If you get it right it's awesome

that first pic really looks like drag queen wear or night clubbing wear. You wont really see any girl wearing blue eye shadow like that during the day out and about.

I wear blue eye shadow but its DARK blue and its only on the eyelid....you can only see it if I blink. Blue to the eyebrows like in that 70s pic is a great big no no

Oh really Now?

there's a difference between every day makeup wear and dressing up like Supergirl.

Red and blue does clash in fashion...you can only get away with it comic con.

Just like you wont see people going to classes in a full spandex body suit with underwear on the outside wearing a cape....but its ok in a comic book. Same concept.

The reality of this world doesn't necessarily aligns to the fantasy world of a comic book.

Car decor is probably not the best analogy. My mother has red hair similar to mine, but it actually is more auburn, or even orange-tinged than anything like a pure red.  Most natural reds are really closer to an orange or red-orange, making their complimentaries between pure blue to blue-green. And with cosmetics, and clothing too, so much depends on skin tone too. Most redheads have a hard time, if their complexion is very fair, of pulling off a pure red, especially in clothing, my mom hates it, not flattering to her.  I only have a few red garments in my wardrobe, and can count on one hand how often I've worn them. Shawn's example of red is anything but natural.

The top one isn't SO bad (I wouldn't wear it)
The middle two are horrible! Whoever designed those could've been outdone by your every day manly man that works in construction and womanizes anything that looks remotely female.

Most of the places I looked at when trying to relearn makeup actually mentioned the usage of blue eyeshadow with brown eyes to make them "pop". I actually use purple though. But I've also heard that you're not supposed to copy other people's makeup so if everybody is saying no to the blue, why not have some fun with it? They don't have to wear it. You do.

And I agree that looking at someone from another generation is not a good idea when it comes to makeup. My grandmother uses a vastly different style than my mother or niece and it works because it's common for her generation.

I have nothing against natural colors at all, in fact I think this right here looks good.

Perfect for those days out in the woods.

I just noticed one of my favorite singers Debbie (Deborah) Gibson sometimes sports blue as well

Yeah I think green eye shadow actually works better for red hair types

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia-cache-ec4.pinterest.com%2Fupload%2F178666310188265658_tEUt5DHJ_b.jpg&hash=aa7317e9401567ad7c7992b3f486d88e5d3378ed)

Green always gets me compliments. And not just in eye shadow, which I tend to use sparingly unless I'm wearing contacts.

I would note, though, the red in that photo is like nothing I've seen in nature, and color matching can be very tricky with real hair colors. I do sometimes find the fashion mag DOs and DON'Ts features a little annoying at times, but I make sure to remember that they're usually expressed in percentages, which often means that 40% or more  of those looking at an outfit marked as a DON'T actually considered it a DO. Life is too short to be a sheep; unless that's something you're really, really into.

No, seriously. Especially not during or near hunting season...and not in severely impoverished areas. It was amazing--and scary--how many single rifle shots I heard all year round when i lived in north Idaho...
