Title: Question about top surgery?
Post by: CursedFireDean on January 06, 2013, 09:15:28 AM
It's a long way off for me and I know a doctor can give me more specific info than most of you, but I was wondering if anyone has gotten top surgery but was not able to take pain killers? I've just wondered this for a while.

I've got an extreme sensitivity to Morphine and all of it's derivatives, so pretty much every prescription painkiller in the US. Just a small dose in the morning will make me vomit all day, and I imagine that's not a good thing to do recovering from surgery. Several years ago I was given a med, it was still a codeine derivative, but it was made for people with sensitivities and I still had a bad reaction to it. So if any of you had a similar issue, how did you deal with it? Did your doctor find you a different med, did you go without, or did you just suffer through it?

Tell your doctor re: your sensitivity. I think there are other alternatives or maybe you won't need anything. But I would tell the doctor.

I've had multiple surgeries (brain, spinal, kidney, hysto) and can't have morphine for the same reasons you can't. I take dilaudid which is 3 times stronger than morphine without the nauseating effects. If nausea still sets in they can give you phenergan which helps. I'm also a fan of keeping a bowl of ice water with a wet wash cloth in it near me for awhile after surgery. When nausea hits just wring it out a bit and rub it on your face, neck, and upper chest. Always works for me.
