Title: Well, looks like that decision is made...
Post by: seebs on January 20, 2013, 07:25:51 PM
Wasn't sure whether to mention that I'm married to one of the trans people I know, but since he got curious and wanted to register, I might as well point that out.

I wrote about this for the newspaper because we had proposed anti-gay legislation on the ballot last year. (http://www.startribune.com/opinion/commentaries/160073175.html)

Long story short, we'd been married about 12 years when he figured out why he hated the word "wife". We thought about it a bit, and decided that "are we a gay couple or a straight couple" was comfortably within our tolerances for agree-to-disagree. That was about 6 years ago, and we're pretty happy, so I guess that was the right call. :)

I'm ... well, either I'm straight, or I'm a lesbian, or something, but in any event, I am attracted to girls, so he's been non-transitioning so far, and that seems to work out. I am fine with the male identity, I just like boobs. :)

My marriage situation isn't all that different from yours, but is a little.

But one thing I've learnt and which you both seem well on your way to is that, there is nothing in the universe worse than loneliness.

Sex, physicality, we can and may, experience these without that emotional connection. Masturbation becomes more attractive by comparison.

But that emotional connection, that's everything.

I tell my nieces that they must never settle for anything other than perfection. If he isn't perfect now, he won't get any better.

Equally, when they find that soul mate, that's perfection. But it's never what we are expecting. It's better.

Thanks!

For what it's worth: We won. The anti-gay amendment got shot down, making it the first time in the US that such an amendment was subject to a popular vote, and got shot down. (There were also three states which passed, by popular vote, pro-marriage-equality things.)
