President Obama doesn't speak about equality for transgender people in front of LGBT audiences; it follows then that he doesn't speak about equality for transgender in front of audiences that are not primarily LGBT. President Obama certainly didn't mention trans people in his second inaugural speech in the way he mentioned gay people and Stonewall in that speech:
[...]
But words matter. By using the term "gay rights" instead of "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights," he did not take the opportunity to talk about LGBT civil rights to a national audience. President Obama — unlike with gay civil rights issues — only speaks the terms "bisexual" and "transgender" to LGBT audiences, and doesn't even mention his administration's trans specific accomplishments to LGBT audiences.
This ^^^ is exactly what I said in the "LGBT Umbrella" thread...
Considering that I feel he could be a very helpful advocate for the transgender community, I was disappointed with the speech, I'm not surprised, he played it safe, like politicians always do it seems.
Count me way jaded, but both sides of that aisle are just playing games with all of our lives. If ever we fell under a despotic government you can bet that we'd all be the first ones up the chimney. Sorry, but it's atypical of how things work in this world.
I consider a victory for gays a victory for trans. Our detractors are generally the same mindset and the more we crush their ignorance the better life will be for all of us.
We, and all of the LGBTQ tribe are used by politicians to serve their purposes. Obama has switched his position on gay marriage several times during his run for office and as President. And just like any other politician, I wouldn't trust him with a bag of cotton balls! If I had my way a wall would be built around DC like in that movie with Kurt Russell. Escape from DC! This time "Snake Pilsner" has to rescue the one non politician aka corrupt DB! :icon_lemon:
Yeah, I wish POTUS had explicitly mentioned trans folks in his second inaugural, but he's the best President ever in terms of accomplishments to help transgender people:

Also, Vice President Biden has publicly referred to transgender rights as the "next major civil rights battle of our time."
So yeah, I'm pretty happy with the current administration when it comes these issues.

I'm not an Obama fan but I can still give him credit where credit is due. FYI, even if we are not gay, the rest of the world thinks we are. Matter of fact, they consider us Super Gay or "gayer than gay. Also, there is only 1 or two of us for every gay & lesbian person. We are a very small special interest group so don't get your hopes up that that the T is going to get much of the LGBT spotlight.
It was disappointing but we just need to become more visible and educate the general public.
That's the way I approach it.

Shantel, you get it !
Too bad as I've looked at the responses on several forums concerning what our "Fearful leader " has spoken. The day we unite and stop the stupid belittling of the differences within our ranks and decide enough is enough is the day we finally tell the world , Hey WE'RE PEOPLE TOO! ellen
