I find is so very anoying when I recieve a piece of mail with my old name come to my current address (I have had my name now for 12 years!!!!) and I have roommates >:( Completly anoyed by this, and of course i know i shouldnt be concerned because we get mail for the wrong person here ever so often but I still worry that one of my roommates might be like huh? thats her last name I wonder..... prob not going to happen like that but, my oh crap meter goes off the deep end and paranoia kicks in.. well back in the mailbox that goes with a not here writtten on thee front!
I know what you mean. It's only happened to me once, at about 5 years post op, from a superannuation company. They had been sending me mail by my correct name for years before. So I emailed them threatening to sue for slander if they didn't fix the issue. I pointed out the consequences that this could cause me. I got a snail mail letter back from them a few weeks later appologising and they said it was a computer error. Haven't had a problem since.
That would be extremely irritating and scary as well I would think. I agree with AusBelle, you should tell them that the name they are addressing you as is not your name and they should not be calling you that. More than likely it is a computer error but make sure they know you are serious about them not calling you by that or they may not care to fix the mistake. Sorry again that you were put in that uncomfortable situation :(
My old phone company does this to me. I haven't been with them since my before name change like 4 years ago....been through many house moves since then.
Yet still I get mail from them offering me various discounts to sign back up with them. I called them once to tell them a: I'm not interested, and B: I have changed my name/gender since then, if you're going to send me crap can you at least get it right.
Their response was to tell me I can't get my name changed on the system because I'm not a current customer .. bbbuuutt if I'd like to sign up ... ::) (while the whole time saying "ma'am" at the end of every sentence) I just hung up, I still occasionally get mail from them.
It would really suck if I was in the same situation as you though with room mates who might connect the dots, I'd be on edge every time the mail came :-\
I believe there is a do not mail list that you can sign up on that would stop junk mail being sent to you. If there is sign up with your old name, unless there is some reason that would be unlawful.

Not sure if that site is legit or not. so please be careful.
Try this for annoying: I received on Friday a letter from the DVLA - the British government department that handles vehicle and drivers' licences. About a month ago I submitted a form to notify them of my name change for the registration of my car and Friday's response from them was pretty much as follows:
Dear Mrs OldName
We notice you've sold the car. We can't send the new owner any documentation because you haven't provided their address. Please provide this info.
AARRGH!
I sent her back a very snotty letter, pointing out that I haven't sold the car. I filled in their form precisely as instructed and didn't tick the box to say there was a new owner, so she has no business thinking that it has been sold. (She'd even included a photocopy of my form, which proved my point). ;)
I pointed out that I doubt I would've received this letter if I'd merely changed my name due to marriage etc. and that I believe I only received it because the title & gender of my new name is different than my old name.
In the UK, it is unlawful to treat people less favourably on the grounds of gender reassignment so I pointed out that she's breaking the law by treating me less favourably than someone who isn't trans. I said I expect a letter of apology to accompany my new documentation, and I asked that her department be more considerate of the needs of their trans customers in future.
Thanks for the bout of dysphoria, DVLA lady. :(

Reminds me of when I went to the tag place to change the title on my car, the lady there asked me where so and so(male name) was and I raised my hand and she looked at me like I was an idiot. It took a few minutes to get her to understand what was going on and then she had to go to the supervisor to find out if it could even be done, lol. I ran into similar difficulties getting my name changed on my cell phone contract too.
A lot of these people don't often run into the situation and it does throw them off. I try to cut them some slack when it happens.
