Ok, so I really ought to look into finding a gender therapist, but I'm kinda unsure where/how to start. I assume finding one isn't that different from finding other sorts of therapists? Admittedly, I've never found my own therapists before, as I was a teenager when I started seeing a psychologist for depression, so my parents handled that. Given that my depression and my gender dysphoria may be intertwined, would a gender therapist likely be able to help with both?
Granted, I knew I needed to seek therapy again several months before I even realized I was in denial about gender dysphoria, but haven't done so due to lack of money. I don't have health insurance right now, and my money is all tied up with school right now. What money I do have for therapy is chewed up in order see my old psychiatrist (who is way too expensive, and am not comfortable talking about gender to) three times a year for medication maintence (I've been on antidepressants for years). I'd love to find someone else, but couldn't afford it if they demanded medical exams. Not sure what to do about this.
I know my school offers counciling services. I wonder if they would be of any help? I'm a little scared to ask, though. Perhaps I should contact my school's LGBTQ organization and see what they say?
Anyway, is there anything I need to know about gender counseling before starting? Also, if anyone knows of any good therapists in Chicago's western suburbs, please let me know. Thanks.
You can try transinstitute.org and they may be able to refer you to one in Chicago. Last time I spoke with Caroline she mentioned she was trying to build up a network nationwide.
Otherwise you should ask your school and also the Chicago LGBT center for referrals. Good luck!
There's a trans center in Chicago. I don't know the name but you could google it.
