Republicans in the House of Representatives Friday introduced a modified version of the Violence Against Women Act that strips the bill of its express protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity, which would enable states to exclude lesbian, bisexual, transgender and transsexual women from receiving benefits under the grant. The House version of the VAWA also modifies language concerning Native American women, adjusting the capability of tribal authority to prosecute perpetrators of domestic violence on reservations. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has denounced the bill, which is radically different from the all-inclusive version that passed the Senate last week with bipartisan support.

WASHINGTON — The House and Senate appeared headed for another partisan battle as the House prepared to take up its version of the once-noncontroversial Violence Against Women Act.
The Republican-crafted House bill to renew the popular 1994 act, which expired in 2011, was introduced Friday to instant criticism from Senate Democrats, who said it fell short in fulfilling the law's mission of protecting women from domestic violence.
The office of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., defended the bill, saying Cantor was committed to reauthorizing the law and had worked hard to build consensus between the two parties and with advocacy groups.

House GOP Unveils Competing Violence Against Women Act

House Republicans released their version of the Violence Against Women Act on Friday and are poised to fast-track it to a floor vote next Tuesday during a Rules Committee hearing.
The House GOP's legislation doesn't go as far as the reauthorization that passed the Senate on an overwhelming bipartisan vote earlier this month. It reflects some movement in that direction but falls short of a breakthrough on the central disputes that scuttled reauthorization of VAWA last year, namely, coverage for gay, Native American and illegal immigrant women. Democrats quickly rejected the bill and advocates against domestic violence expressed concerns with it.
[...]
Unlike the Senate-passed version, the House GOP's proposed legislation does not explicitly guarantee equal coverage for gay and lesbian victims of domestic violence, and it would create a hurdle for tribal courts to prosecute non-Native Americans charged with assaulting women on tribal lands. It also includes stricter criteria for abused illegal immigrants to gain legal status.
I'm actually surprised they didn't cut cis women out of the bill as well. :-\
It won't go past the Senate Democrat majority and the President will no doubt veto it if it did which is unlikely.
so much for the "kind and fair GOP"
what was that hread we discuss recently....'the conservative transgender".....

It's all about the costs, everything the GOP is doing is about cost cutting even if they alienate their constituency and shoot themselves in the foot doing it.

Considering the way people in Congress have been acting lately, I'm surprised the bill is even getting floor time. :-\

I think that the way they are going to let "sequestration" take effect is treasonous....Sequestration is going to bring about the biggest recession the world has seen...
In that case the transgender protections from violence against women act will become such a moot point when there will no doubt be violence against everyone as collateral damage by an army of disenfranchised and desperate people.

Me too! I was under the impression that the GOP doesn't believe in the existance of women...

We get that one as well from our political glory hunters.
The hypocrisy of their demands seems to be as lost on them as it is on their supporters.
So if a transgender woman is beaten, raped, or even hospitalized, it doesn't matter because she's not a "real" woman? Sick...

The only thing standing in the way of you getting beaten or raped is the VAWA?
No. To clarify, what I'm saying is that there are no legal ramifications for when these things happen to transgender women, at least under this act. Such a thing implies that transgender women are somehow viewed as "fake" women who don't apply. That's sick.
No one's saying that this act will be your savior. It obviously won't be, which is why rapists are called criminals. :P It just describes the procedures designed to punish such miscreants.
Nonetheless, I can still take offense to not being counted as a woman. :(

it really is a shame that this legislation can even pass, but I figure we'll find a workaround when the time comes. That's traditionally how this whole unfair process works.
There is no reasonable justification for their stupidity on this. I used to be able to understand reasons why some LGBT people were R's, not anymore. Shameful, disgraceful.
