Title: The Passport Office, the Final Outrage?
Post by: melissa90299 on May 23, 2007, 11:33:01 PM
I have a DL with an F, a birth cert in my female name but an M not an F and an unquestionably female face, presence and demeanor, I bring my documents up to the window, where this middle-eastern, probably Muslim guy, helps me, he looks at my documents and asks why I am going to Thailand, ma'am, (calling me ma'am, ma'am, ma'am right from the intro) I told him for surgery, he says, I see bit there is a problem and he points to the F on DL and the M on my birth cert...anyway, he says I can bring a surgery letter in later so I can travel with an F on my passport, he didn't say this directly because he seemed uncomfortable with discussing it but I understood that's what he was getting at, so he gives me a number and tells me to wait then when I leave he says real Loud "Thank you sir...oh, excuse me, ma'am" like he said it on purpose just to insult me, I was hurt and humiliated so bad---I have never had this happen to me since FFS, I burst into tears and walked off, some women said "Don;t pay attention to him, he is a real jerk, I know I am here everyday"

Anyway, I wait all day, come to find out I need the surgeon's letter before they process my application! So the jerk not only insulted me, he wasted my whole day, I had planned on going to the gym, working on my music and going to this way cool woman's AA meeting in Noe Valley, instead, I have just been surfing the net in between bouts of crying and feeling abused
...and even worse, I didn't workout and, instead, went on a mini card binge, at least< I binged out on low fat barley bread from Trader Joe's but I ate the whole loaf!

Melissa, did you get his name?  The name of his supervisor?

Anybody, what are the current rules for US passports?  If there's a way to get a temporary passport with an 'F' on it, what is it?

Melissa, you may be able to contact Transgender Law Center on the passport information.

I feel it's time for constructive complaining here.  That clerk needs to feel the heat.  Once you get your ducks in a row, who is your congressional representative?  They have people on staff just for helping constituents with crap from the bureaucracy (I used a 'congressional' to get the military to cough up $3,000+ I was owed in back pay when they changed my Pay Entry Basic Date near the end of my career.  they had been dragging their feet for two years.)

Carb-coma won't make it better, Melissa.  Constructively insisting you be treated with dignity will benefit you, and the rest of the community in the long run.

We're here to help!

Karen

 :(

C'mon sweetie, try to calm down.

I know that it hurts hon, but consign it to the past, for your sake, for you are worth that kind of effort.

Ignorant and immature people are not worth stressing out over; it will not change them and you will be torturing a beautiful woman who does not deserve such.  :)

You've been through enough in this life, Melissa. It is time for you to LIVE!!  :)

Melissa,

If that's your "final outrage" you should consider yourself very fortunate.  Somehow I think you will encounter more.  So sorry the guy was a total jerk.  Just hang on, work your program and drop a note to a friend of Bill.

Peace,
Kristi

Yeah, they really need to re-train all their employees; it is an outrage!  so when are you leaving San Francisco, homie girl?  Let us know to send you good karma. :)

Sorry you had to endure that humiliation.  >:( Too bad some clown can ruin your whole day like that, not to mention your figure. I think complaining to the appropriate supervisor/manager/congressional rep is the way to go. They should make him write a personal apology letter to you.

Hugs,

Rhonda
