Today makes twenty seven years since I quit drinking. Alcohol nearly killed me, as any addiction will. If you are having substance abuse issues, please take whatever steps are necessary to take your life back. You will thank yourself for it. Hugs, Devlyn
That's amazing Devlyn, and truly inspirational. :) I have a number of people in my family who have struggled with alcohol addiction (most of them aren't alive anymore), so it's always wonderful to hear how someone else has managed to overcome.
congratulations :-) :-) :-)

Congratulations, Hon
Congrats!
Its been 38 years for me since I quit both alcohol and smoking. I started around 12 quit at 30.
I was raised around alcoholic parents, they went to the Moose Club every night, I went there with them about 3 nights a week, so I was always exposed. One night I found myself waiting for my kids to go to bed so I could have a drink.
For some reason due to my upbringing, I didn't like to have a drink until after they were in bed.
When I realized I was trying to get them to go to bed early one night I said, Thats Enough.
I brought them into the kitchen and had them watch me pour all my alcohol (beer, vodka and Bourbon) down the drain and have never taken a drink since.
You are a true inspiration to all of us!!!
Congratulations Dear Devlyn, may you see many years fill with joy and prosperity!!!
Thanks, everybody! Your support means a lot to me.
@Sarah, I started at 12 and quit at 24. Congratulations to you on your success!

@Devlyn,
A year ago my bro-in-law almost succeeded for the 3rd time as an alcoholic in losing his life Dec 2011, it was gut wrenching to see him on life support, but over three months the hospital staff worked there tricks & got him back a year ago in March. It was awful seeing what he did to himself, emotional ups and downs for the family.
So, for you Dear Devlyn, you saw your way through the haze, had the courage to take control of your life. You must be proud of yourself for staying sober and I am proud of you too, and for posting to help others, that is not easy to admit. Bless you for giving yourself another day and look at yourself, if you hadn't made it you wouldn't have gotten to live your other gender as Devlyn, that is something to live for & Honor.
@Sarah Louise & everyone's Aunty Shan, congratulations for seeing life for what it is, coming back from the brink, you have my respect and appreciation.
For all of you, I am Happy you are here & in my life, you are of value to everyone here. Fortunately I have never let the demon Rum get to me, only have one or two on Saturday night & rarely anything else the rest of the week.
My fav song that is a theme for my life is "I Will Survive."
Love
Jamie
Aw, thanks, Jamie! You have a way with words. Hugs, Devlyn
Hi Devlyn,
Thank you, I think I am too wordy and should learn to be more concise.
I have never been in an alcoholics shoes but may have the sense of what it takes to stay clear of alcohol. From about 1993 to about 2007 I had acid reflux, my GP didn't tell me food diet may be a factor & didn't mention alcohol could trigger my throat constriction & inhalers could dilate the air passage open. After a year and half I stopped taking a medication. I figured out the triggers on my own, alcohol was one, so I stopped alcohol until the symptoms went away & I very carefully worked my way back to alcohol from 2007 on. This takes a lot of will power to not drink when out with friends that are drinking. So I have been in your shoes briefly to have the courage to not take that drink.
Keep strong.
Hugs
Jamie
Congratulations my friends.
Devlyn and Sarah Louise you are both an inspiration that have kept me going in some dark times.
My younger sister drank herself to death after a sexual assault.
I had a pretty good go at it.
I will never be cured but I hold you with me when I need strength.
Love and Congratulations
Cindy
Thanks, Cindy! It's a shame that addiction is wired into some of us, it turns life into a minefield. Hugs, Devlyn

If it isn't alcohol, it's food, drugs, tobacco or sex just to touch the tip of the addiction-berg.
Congratulations! x
Thanks, Rachel! Hey Shan, I'm a food addct from way back! Can't shake the stuff! Hugs, Devlyn

Me too besides being a recovering drunk, I am an eataholic, love everything that isn't good for me. You don't suppose that our basic nature is self destructive do you? ;)
I resemble that remark!

I cannot tell you how proud I am of everybody who has posted their trials and tribulations in this topic.
Dev, you especially, for being open and brave enough to set the tone. You are someone I look up to, even if you are a few years younger!
