Why the heck can't I cross my legs like most cis women can? I have fairly wide hips. I don't start HRT until next month and wonder if my thigh and leg muscles will shrink to allow my legs to cross easier or what??

Most likely.
I find it much easier and more natural when i'm tucked.
Um ya guess that might me why. Thanks, Kay

No, no, no! Do not pay attention to her, she does not know what she is talking about.
The reason is because the angle of insertion of the femur on cis female has a higher convergence than in cis-males, irrespective of how wide the pelvis is...so, this translate in an easy cross over dear
Dr. Peky (I know the stuff because I am a "book worm")
.
Also.... what kind of leg crossing are we talking about here?

No I'm pretty sure its the junk.
muuu: peky is known for being quite hard to understand, but I can hazard a guess here. Translation to normal language:
"The reason is that in cis-females, no matter the actual width of the pelvis, femurs are inserted in the pelvis with an angle towards the inside, compared to males."
In short, women naturally have their knees closer to each other, as well as the other end of the femur farther from the center of their body, so it's less effort to cross their legs.
As for me, I think one of the main factors for my difficulties in crossing my legs is that my legs' muscles are HUGE and get in the way, working in splendid teamwork with the fat there. Combine that to my sorta-wide-for-a-male-but-definitely-not-female hips, and there you have the difficulty already. And I suppose the thing about the femur's angle is true too.
Though unless you're super obese or have zero flexibility, crossing your legs relatively comfortably should be possible for everyone, even if you need to pull your leg over the other with your hands a little. Many guys do it. Just gotta make sure you don't put your genitalia just in the wrong spot, because obviously there might be a problem.

MaidOfOrleans: Seriously, I'm pretty sure one would notice right away if it were that, and not even ask. I mean, there's a huge difference between "ugh, it's hard to reach" and "eek, my junk is being squeezed!" Besides, junk-squeezing doesn't prevent anything physically, does it? It just makes it more painful, I guess. Dunno, I've never really managed to get hurt down there. Either mine are much less sensitive, either they're evasive to blows and squeezing. :p
Before learning how to tuck, there was no way I could cross my legs thigh-over-thigh. After tucking, I could, but could feel a squeeze on The Boys...after about a month on HRT it was effortless.
YMMV

Huh, ok well I can do that >.< I actually have never sat like a guy. I am always in some sort of ball, crossed leg, sitting on feet, etc position when im in a chair. Very rarely have i put my foot on my knee in the traditional guy pose.
The only sitting position i have a hard time with is sitting with my feet folded on my sides like this:
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fidrawgirls.com%2Fimages%2F2010Q4%2Fhow-to-draw-anime-sit-pose.jpg&hash=8cb2e2f1db8a6e56fbf43e554579571d5d6f2e85)
Flexibility definitely plays a part. When I was..fat.. I didn't have the flexibility that I do now having lost weight, exercise, and stretch.
I think most of it is flexibility. I can cross my legs and sit in a ball and out my legs to the side. Funny how the only position that hurts is the normal guy position with the foot on the knee. But then again when ever I sit down my legs just kinda naturally want to cross. To make it not look so bad I just cross them again so that foot with leg over goes behind the other leg ( which I also do get questioned on how I do that, funny how it is usually cis women that ask that.).
What everybody said is correct! No disagreements, there is just more than one factor.
1. Girls who have male style bone structure in the pelvis and hips, always have a tougher time with the knee over knee cross, because the tendons have to stretch more to achieve that angle.
2. Girls who have especially large junk, always have a tougher time with the knee over knee cross, because even a full tuck doesn't clear the way completely.
3. Girls who have larger than typical thighs muscles, always have a tougher time with the knee over knee cross because the muscle tissue gets in the way.
4. Girls who have more fat in the thigh area, always have a tougher time with the knee over knee cross, because the chub gets in the way.
I used to suffer from all four. I cross comfortably now. What changed?
1. Still have the same bones, but I practiced without pushing it, and over time I got more flexible there. Stretch...
2. Thank you shrinkage! Thank you very much.
3. Being off of T shrunk my thigh muscles to the velociraptor size typical of girls in my family, instead of the T-rex size typical of boys in my family.
4. Lost 30 lbs.
So there!
I'm quite certain some cis-women will have equal problems crossing legs. I'm not convinced there is a gender bias, only cultural. As an aside, my older brother has always crossed his legs. His "junk" is normal size, doesn't have girlish bone structure, and neither is he gay. He's a physicist. I've never had a problem crossing my legs, but I don't do it because I worry about blood circulation and DVT.
I don't know what's so difficult about it... I can cross my legs just fine tucked and not tucked ( and often do ). Then again, I've been doing that all my life.
It's not the junk..
I've always been able to do it - and my junk wasn't small... It's a little smaller these days. :)
It's a combination of flexibility and weight in the legs as far as I can tell. I have several cis female friends that are overweight and can't do it at all. I also have cis female friends that are not overweight and can't do it, so they do it "like a guy". I know guys that are in unbelievable shape that can do it with ease. So I deduce it's flexibility and weight, but really can't tell cause I'm one of the ones that can't do it either.
I was able to do it before puberty.
Idk why you guys are saying it's not your junk. I can totally tell that that's the only reason I can't. >.<
Theres a few things that helped me keep my legs shut, weight loss, hormones, and what I am wearing.
In female jeans I find it way easier to keep them shut...
As far as crossing, I am getting there slowly but its definitely not easy if its not something your accustomed to.

I have to agree with this. As a biological woman (and morbidly obese to add) I cannot cross my legs any it feels more natural for me have them spread at the knees so it's definately a combination of weight and flexibility....for me at least.
I am one of the least flexible people I know, and my junk is not small. I don't have any problem putting one leg over the other. I can even twist them around one another for one more cross.
I think it's mostly that I have very thin legs, though maybe my hip geometry has some female element to it.

Yes absolutely, one of the many physical and emotional perks of an orchiectomy!
I think Peky has a point. It's probably that the top of the femur is situated further apart on females than on males.
That said, I always cross my legs in public even without thinking about it. Junk size may be part of it because mine is tiny and I've never pinched even when untucked. Thigh fat may have something to do with it when they get to a certain point because my mom has HUGE thighs and I never see her cross her legs. But mine are big and fat and... like I said I don't have much problem.
I'm really flexible though... I can put my legs behind my head and, while laying on my back, bring my knee up to my chest and even down to the floor if I want to.
Doctors recommend against crossing your legs, it can raise your blood pressure.

I can do a "double cross" too...at the thighs, then again at the ankles. The odd thing is, it's painful (at the knees) if I do it when
not having sex. During sex for some reason it's a LOT easier and much more...enjoyable. ;)
I have always crossed my legs like this ever since I was younger, it just feels so natural. The boy parts never get in the way...maybe it helps to be on the small side down there?
I just took this as I sit here watching mindless morning tv ;)

The sockets of the leg bone (femur) are father away in cis-females relative to a simliar size cis male
In cis females the socket faces inwards, and thus the femurs veer towrds the center (midline)
Now, and to the delight of many. Many TS folks have ci-female pelvises! sya what? yeah ladies, the same genes and hormones that caused some -if not all- the parts of your brain to turn "female," tend to express in other parts of your body.

You see how your right calf rest near the top of your left knee? that is because you may have a cis-male pelvis. Note that in most cis females the calf sits on the top of the tight...

Your junk is flexible. You can put it up so it sits "on top" of your legs when you cross them, or down so it's underneath, in both cases avoiding the squishing. If you tuck, the testes are completely protected, too.
Really, mine isn't huge but still pretty average - not that I've compared, but I guess so - yet I've never had the slightest problem. Just have to move it away. Well, actually, mine pretty much slide away on their own if they're in the way.
I've never smashed my stuff with my own thighs... It must suck!
pretty sure it's just a person to person thing, dealing with weight and flexibility. like me? I'm a slender male at the moment and have no issue with it. My junk does not impede me regardless of it's *ahem* generous (although unwanted obviously) size.

OK so, out of curiosity (I forgot why it was not as comfortable to sit the way shown in the pic i posted) I tried it out. And I can sit like that fairly easily, though out of all the ways I sit it is not as comfortable. It kinda puts a little strain on my knees. Which is odd since I can usually bend my knee back and have my foot pass my thigh when standing.
I was the kid growing up who could put her feet behind her head and all that stuff :D
And now that I'm thinking of it, one fairly feminine position I can't sit in is having my legs stretched out in front of me and sitting straight up. But I kind of blame this on flexibility more than anything..
Nnngh, I'm jealous. I can barely touch my toes while sitting with my legs straight, and with much effort and pain. For that matter, most of my articulations don't even get to the point where they're truly straight, and stay a little bended no matter what, let alone bend backwards. I wish I could open myself up and correct these unnecessarily tight tendons and ligaments.
Oh, uhm, the pain is behind the knees and in the calves. It really does feel like it's the tendons and ligaments. Though with how much time I spend in front of a computer, I admit it would have been very possible.

3 months ago I had to pull one leg over the other in order to cross above the knee.

Oh my I'm envious of you getting to be in that sun! When I was little the nuns at my school taught us to sit this way......(I guess that tells you they didn't want us to have fun!) But they told us to think of the queen of england. Anytime she crosses her ankles(not her legs...oh gasp!) But you do it like knees together, back straight and ankles crossed to the side of you and like you're pulling them back toward your bottom. This way I'm sure is no where near as relaxing as your pic! Better to be relaxed and comfy, and you look like you are:)
Hmm, out of curiosity, since I'm not really comfortable actually sitting (partly because my legs if left relaxed always want to be knees apart and that's uncomfortable), I almost always kneel on my chair (alternating with periods of sitting Indian-style and/or straight).

A,
Wow, that pose in the pic you put up.....amazing posture! I sit like that all the time if I'm sitting on the floor.....the only problem I personally have sitting like that for long periods is blood flow in my legs(my feet always fall asleep!) Do you have the same problem? Maybe it's my feet placement as I'm sitting on them....who knows! I never sit indian style so I can't answer for that one:)
Sitting like that would definitely give me pins and needles in my legs and feet. Not good for my dvt paranoia either.

Uuhm, yes. After several minutes, I often start to have this problem. Sometimes, just switching my feet (the one underneath goes on top and vice versa) or slightly moving one leg aside for a few minutes fixes it. If not, that's when I alternate, so my legs stay alive. I sit straight or indian-style for a while, and when I get annoyed or conscious that my posture is not healthy (sitting on one leg for example), I go back. I move around a lot, I guess.
Though to avoid this, supposedly there's something about carefully aligning feet with the "sitting bones". The Japanese always sit like this, and they have the same problems, but most probably other tips, too. It's called seiza, or 正座.

Karate? I've done some when I was about 10-12 years old. Not much. I reached, like, orange belt, and in the only two duel thingies we did, all I did was dodge, because both hitting and blocking seemed painful. Super warrior, rwar.
Though if it's related to seiza, nope. We sat indian-style. I just sit this way because it's comfy and allows me to warm my legs while sitting, too.
For me, since I have been quite feminine all my life and some of my studies have confirmed that I have a female bone structure, is most likely the reason that I never had a problem sitting with my legs crossed or double crossed. And that I have been doing it since I was little, even to the point of being ridiculed by some extremely closed-minded people. For me it is the most natural and comfortable position.

I'm not quite sure. My brother has a very masculine bone structure and has been crossing his legs, like Obama does, since very young. I don't think it's any one thing. It's a combination of gender biased nurture and how you're physically built, but sex may be the least of it.
Yeah, uhm, the correct seiza is this. Feet crossed, buttocks on feet. Actually, sitting with your feet outwards (basically sitting on the ground between your legs) has pretty much nothing to do with seiza. I... can do it, but it seriously strains my overly tight ligaments. Comfort: zero. Probably a posture reserved to flexible people.
As for karate... Hmm, I never got to the point of getting hit. I was too much of a scaredy-cat. I just kept jumping back and sideways until the teacher got tired of it and stopped the match.
For what it's worth I noticed that when tightly tucked I can't cross my legs properly but untucked and/or poorly tucked I can cross effortlessly and even double cross my legs lol...
The most comfortable position for me to sit is Indian style. Am I allowed to say that? If I sit too "feminine" like with my legs together my brother or mom will say something and give me a weird look. I'm 5'7 and small boned so I think that has a lot to do with it.
I can cross my legs and even wrap my legs around each other better than most cis. I attribute it to frequently cruising my legs since childhood and also low T due to my kleinfelters.
When men see me cross my legs they say that they can't do it because of their stuff.
I am double-jointed myself and can sit in some weird ways. Or at least I did when I was younger and skinnier. I remember being in school about 10 and being told that I should not be physically able to sit that way, due to the ways bones sit in the body.
Fat has limited it a bit, but I can still cross my legs and if pressed I can double cross them. But then again, I am double-jointed, so its not normal.

When men see me cross my legs they say that they can't do it because of their stuff.
Rosa may I ask how you found out you have Kelinfelters? Just curious.
Huh, well I am half Asian, so perhaps this explains some of my sitting flexibility.

I think thats more to the truth, I never really took much notice before this thread. But I had a very interesting observation last weekend. My 3brothers, my husband, my sister-in-law and her husband visited, the 5 guys watched the football on TV while my sister-in-law and myself made coffee and sandwiches. We all sat around afterwards just chatting, but myself and my sister-in-law where the only 2 that automatically crossed our legs, I just noticed the 5guys didn't cross their legs and they never do, it must be their junk, my own husband is well endowed lol I think he would find it impossible to cross his legs, maybe with great difficulty he probably finds it uncomfortable, afraid of squeezing his junk, Im just waiting for the right time to ask him, men can be very sensitive when their woman is enquiring about their junk.

LOL!!!!! Your too funny Shantel, theres 1 thing Iv learned after living over 30years as a woman and many boyfriends later, you never refer to a man's anatomy in a negative way to a man, they can get very sensitive, its ok on a girly night out, we can have a giggle on men's junk lol among ourselves.
No it has to be in a flattering way :D ''oh honey, you are so well endowed, your a real man, you certainly know how to please a girl'' that always puts a smile on his face, never never say its junk.
They love to impress a woman, but hate being put down by a woman.
I'm quite sure it's not the junk. It's more, like, the belief that their junk should prevent them from doing it, and therefore if they do it, they will appear to others as if they don't have much of it. And men tend to dislike it a lot.
Seriously, unless the person is excessively fat and/or muscular, there's obviously room for the junk to move away and avoid being squashed. I can't imagine I couldn't do it even if my stuff's size tripled or quadrupled. There's more than enough extra skin for it to go underneath or over it.
No. Most men don't do it because it's "gay".
Yeah, like I said, I can't do it because I'm too fat and the legs just don't fit together like that. The junk really doesn't enter into it. There's too much collision on the mid-thigh area for it to come even close to squeezing the family jewels. Trust me. I've tried crossing my legs like that many times, and I just can't do it.
Now the sitting with the legs together and ankles crossed... I do that all the time.

It's so obvious! Many men feel the need to occupy as much territory as possible when they sit, otherwise they feel "gay".
Some men I know, not only don't they cross their legs, but neither do they do the shopping nor the dishes nor any house work, because of the junk. Not directly, but
indirectly.
Joanna, I was into my 20's and had not started male puberty. A week in a university hospital found out why and I was put on T. They didnt do genetic testing, but everything points to kleinfelters.

Aww, another riddle solved finally :). I usually sit with my legs crossed, when I am relaxed, so it is mainly at home, some public places like cafeteria and such. Everywhere else I just prefer to keep my legs together or cross the ankles. I never thought why I have been doing it this way before this thread.
But I have always been annoyed by those guys in public transport, who are always sitting with their knees wide apart and not even feeling obliged to move a bit aside when somebody takes the next seat and involuntarily bumps into them. I never understood why would somebody do this, except that they probably have poor manners or just dont care how others might feel. Ok, now I got it :)
No problems! ;) The guys who I know would spread out as much as possible, no matter how they sat, whether it was on the floor or on a chair. Knees were always greater than 90 degrees apart, crotch on rude display. To me it always smacked of male insecurity and fear of being perceived as not straight. Personally, I prefer a guy who's a little more secure. And like the Neanderthal swagger, it's so ironic, it's laughable. :laugh
this is funny as I also had troubles crossing my legs for as long as I remember. I've been on HRT for 4 months now. I always blamed it on my thighs as they are larger, however at first I didn't even realize it but I was sitting in my chair at home playing Pokemon Soul Silver on my 3DS and didn't even think about doing just crossed my legs, in fact I didn't even realize that I did it at first. It was kinda a "neat" moment. However I don't know if it was the fact I'm on HRT that now allows me to be able to cross my legs or the fact I've been losing weight.
I've found that its pretty much a habit when I sit down to just right away cross my legs like this, wasnt really aware of it till this thread brought it all up lately.
I cross them at the ankles as well, but this is the automatic habit position.

I notice that I tend to want to cross my legs as well when I sit and seiza isn't possible (like those plastic hard chairs at school). But then again it might just be part of my struggle to try and get comfortable when my favourite position isn't an option, because I do move around a lot in those cases.
I find that I automatically always cross my legs at the ankles. I am getting to stiff in my old age to cross my legs tightly at the knees.
I can double cross my legs with very little effort and sit comfortably. I just tried it recently and was surprised I could do it and that it was relatively easy to do. I don't quite look like Heidi Klum but it is a decidedly feminine pose that results and makes for great look when wearing skirt.
My pelvis is not especially wide (to my dismay) which is why I am surprised I can do it. It is said that the reason women can generally do this pose is because of the geometry of wider placement of the attachment legs at the hips.

i have heard yoga lengthens the muscles, i would assume make them more slender. also the obvious make one more flexible.
remembering to cross my legs when I sat, was something I struggled to get use to.. My cis-girl roommate, would often remind me. sit like a lady.
But got into the habit, now its second nature.

Oh, is this a (minor, for sure) female trait? It's something I've done for all my life. Double crossing, even.
It sounds like the two factors are the junk as well as the difference between male/female bone structure. My guess is it's a combo of the two, and the amount that each one contributes varies from person to person.
Personally, I've found that it's much easier to cross my legs when I'm tucked. I found that my legs just don't quite want to cross that way when untucked, even though it doesn't feel like the junk is in the way.

I can do it easily with my right leg over the left, but not as easy with the left leg. Not sure why.
I've been crossing them that way for a long time.

I cross my legs all the time. I can double cross them, too. I've seen my dad crossing his legs, but non of the other women(me excluded) in my family actually like to sit with their legs crossed(I took a poll, lol).
I think it might be a heredity thing. I can double cross my legs. I think that is due to weight though. When I was heavy, that was absolutely impossible! .
I cannot double cross my legs but I think that has more to do with their size than anything else. 24.5" thighs and 15.5" calves (with little fat) makes it extremely difficult. HRT has had miniscule effect on my leg size.
I do cross them easily at the knees though. Looking around my office, a lot of guys do the same. It's a lot more comfortable than any other way.
It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.

It all about the size of your thighs. Even cis women with big thighs cannot cross their legs.

Ha - I thought it is only me. I can easily do left leg over right but right over left does not work as well. Trying to practice now and it is starting to get easier, so training plays a big role.

Quite the opposite for me (maybe I am still tucking wrong) but I can do it with ease un-tucked and depending on my luck when tucking not at all.

Thinking back - I have been doing it for years. Just became natural. Still practicing the double cross ;D
Interesting—I never realized some people are unable to.
I never was comfortable crossing my legs guy-style: ankle on knee. I always preferred knee over knee. I can double-cross mine both ways.
