Hey everyone,
I am beginning my transition and looking into the legal side of changing name and gender. Is it possible to do both at the same time? I am just thinking why go through all the trouble of changing my name on all these documents when I am going to have to change it all again for the gender marker? Or does it have to be one, then the other? Do most file name changes first and then gender marker?
I checked the documentation on this site for legal gender change but it was kind of vague. I was born in the US, in the state of Illinois and lived here my whole life. If anyone has some insight I'd appreciate it.

Yeah, it has a lot of info about the name change in IL, but the gender change was kind of vague:

To change the gender marker, requires a report from a medical clinic to indicate that genital realignment surgery has taken place or the applicant is in the process of undergoing treatment, however a court order is preferred.
Within 10 days of changing your name or address, you are required by law to notify the Secretary of State of the change. If you change your name, you must obtain a corrected driver's license, corrected title, and corrected registration ID card before the Secretary of State records can be changed. A corrected driver's license must be obtained at a driver services facility. You will be required to show identification with your new name and identification that links your old and new names. Vehicle registration forms may also be completed at the driver services facility, or these forms can be mailed to you.
The current fee for a corrected card is $5 for a driver's license and $10 for an identification card.
I feel like the first sentence is the only one even talking about the gender change and even then the way it's worded I am not sure what it's saying. Other than I guess the name change is connected to the gender change somehow... ???

Yes it's possible to change both at the same time. It will require more proofs to be submitted to the court (since that is how name changes are done).

Thanks for the link but it doesn't really tell me how to go about the process. XD
Since the original question wasn't really answered, no you don't have to change name twice. Most start with name change because of being unable to change gender marker at the same time (complicated by real id act some states use to "verify" identity since SSA demands surgery). most of the time name change is via the courts and may include publishing a legal notice. Birth cert is usually the standard for identity although passport is more usable in getting a job or whatever.
as such the process roughly would be name change, name/gender change on driver's license (?), and maybe birth cert at the same time using a certified copy of name change order to reduce costs of copies.
