Title: Habitual Tendencies
Post by: Anatta on March 23, 2013, 05:03:16 PM
Kia Ora,

Open topic, for lay people philosophers, scientists, spiritual, atheists, theists, nothingists,

Habits, we all have them, some good, some not so good...

So how are they formed ?

And how can one change the bad into good ?

I have a good one, swearing. It's a bad habit that seems to grow with exposure. Thankfully, there is a cure: The Navy. That's right! Join the  #*&$@!^  Navy and  $@!#*/&  sail the  % <#&*/$  ocean blue. You'll be the  &$#@!*/$  best   $@(&/!$#@ sailor to ever  $@!*&) $  in a  #@&/(&^$

Was that what you were looking for? Hugs, Devlyn

Kia Ora Kkut,

You might find this interesting....

"The process by which new behaviours become automatic is habit formation. Examples of habit formation are the following: If you instinctively reach for a cigarette the moment you wake up in the morning, you have a habit. Also, if you lace up your running shoes and hit the streets as soon as you get home, you've acquired a habit. Old habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form because the behavioural patterns we repeat are imprinted in our neural pathways. But the good news is that it is possible to form new habits through repetition."

I use to have a horrible potty mouth. It just happened for no apparent reason, maybe exposure like you say. One day a friend and I looked at each other and admitted how bad our language was and it needed to stop. We agreed to pay each other a dollar each time the other cursed. It didn't take long to cure the problem.

Well, you're not getting any money out of me, sweetheart! Unless we hit Powerball! Hugs, Devlyn

A habit is only a habit when you can stop doing it without any effort.

Otherwise it is called an addiction.

I have a bad habit of taping my fingers or my toes. I can stop that though if I need to.

On the other hand, I have an addiction to chocolate. I have no idea what it would be like to quit and I don't want to find out either.

I have a funny habit of humming when I am eating something I like. And I never hear myself doing it, but others think it is funny and cute. They can always tell if I like something.

I have other bad habits of course, not going to list all of them :)

I likely have a few other habits neither good or bad. For instance when I get dressed, my clothes need to sit on me just so. I take longer to get dressed as a result. Not a problem unless I am in need of getting it done fast.

I eat my food one item at a time, usually veggies potato meat in that order. No real reason I can think of.

The thing with habits, is the longer you do them, the more likely you don't notice you do them any more without thinking about it.

I curse something horrible. But since I have grown more in step with my female side, I seem to have gotten to hate swearing more.

It took me about 20 years to purge myself of the neat freak in order to coexist better with my slob wife. I figued better to be less like my mom, in order to have less friction with my wife. But I have no problem making her remember, she is often the reason the place looks untidy.

My habits are few..

Smoking.. I need to quit that one!
I'm too hard on myself.. Need to quit that too.
I drive too fast a lot.. Probably will continue this. I make excellent time!
I'm pretty sarcastic. Riiiight.. ;)
I avoid eating meat like the plague.. Maybe a habit or a health concern?

I'm sure there are more. My girlfriend probably could give you a novel!

Kia Ora,

The thought manifests as the word;
The word manifests as the deed;
The deed develops into habit;
And habit hardens into character;
So watch the thought and its ways with care,
And let it spring from love
Born out of concern for all beings...
As the shadow follows the body,
As we think, so we become.

The Buddha
