Hey hey! ^_^
I like painting nails! Anyone else? I thought perhaps people could post some pictures?
Some nails that I have done:

Those are really cool. I love the jolly rodger nils... Ok maybe my inner goth likes to show up sometimes.. Keep at it!
I love reds pinks purples
Great nails! I never have luck with nail polish though:( it always is chipped within a couple of hours. I use a primer coat, color layer and then a clear protected coat. Maybe is there are brand tat doesn't chip at the ends? I have a job that involves a lot of paperwork and typing...so my nails definitely get used.
What cool designs/colors. So glad to find another girl that loves to do her nails. I just love perfect long nails. I almost cry if I break one. My colors are mostly reds & pinks. All natural! I used to go to nail salons but it looks so much better naturally.
You go girl, have fun!!! How about your toe nails???
Spring, You should not have so much trouble, make sure nails are dry & manicured, use quality polish, make sure they are fully dry, no smuges!! After dry maybe a second coat.
You should be good to go dancing/work/trying for days.
Have fun.
Thanks francisann...maybe I'm not drying all the way!
Nail foils are great for not chipping. Also, gels seem to be getting a lot of love atm (but I haven't tried these.... yet :) )
Steph :-)

Love doing my toe nails too :-) and matching them to my finger nails. There is one combined pic above :-)

So happy to find some girl friends that love to do their nails & little toes.
My mother owned a beauty shop & always loved doing my nails & toes with lots of different color polish. I was a little "boy" then but I did not care. It was & is still such fun.
Spring, good polish should not chip. If you type a lot just use the bottom of your fingers, over time it will be natural & your nails will stay perfect. Good luck girl friend.
Think I'll give my nails a new color for tonight. Love waking up with nice pink or red long nails.
I love painting my nails but they are so friggin brittle that they always break. Even when I use hard as nails and take gelatin. But paint away I do. I even love to add glitter!

Okay, I have no idea what nail foils are? What are they & are they easy to do?
Francisann, thanks...I normally just use opi....maybe that's not the best brand, what brands do you use?
Spring, I'm an older woman, I still use Revlon. I have nice red polish on right now. Please have a great day young girl friend. I hope maybe we can become friends.
Are nail foils like decals for nails? I want to do gels but need to save the $ to go and have them done right. Maybr I will get a manicure with some fakes put on.

My S.O. Laura, the consummate girly-girl painted nail lady says OPI is the only way to go with a Sally Hansen quick dry clear top coat. They will go a week easily without chipping.
Auntie shan,
Yeah I thought opi should be okay....maybe it's all the legos I'm forced to build with sebastian!
Oh and yeah are the gel nails just the gel overlay they do on top of your original nails? I had something like that done a few years ago for a wedding.....but it really made my own nails a wreck, like very thing afterwards. It took forever to get back to normal. I think I'll go to sally's and see about this foil thing you girls keep talking about. Maybe that will be the way to go!

Legos and all that construction might be tough on nails, Laura is the garden goddess and has her hands in the dirt a lot, so whatever works huh?
Steph,
Have you ever let your nails grow real long? It is a challenge to keep all 10 long, there is always that one nail that breaks. Then you have to just start over again.
Love your nails & such pretty toes.
Much love,
Francis
Steph, I want to slap you because your fingers and nails are adorable!
I love painting my nails. One of my favorite things to do but I can't go to work with them painted sadly. :(
Next chance I have, I'll snap a pic or two. Great work though, miss cute fingers ;)
Awesome nails, Steph! :D
I enjoy doing mine, but about as creative as I get is putting little decals on them (flowers, etc...), and then clear-coating over the decals.
I recently found an adequate alternative to OPI: ahhh... "Wet & Wild". It's about a third the cost, goes on well (one application coverage), and holds up well.
Wow steph! Some REALLY creative and detailed nail art! I would actually call it a "portfolio"! I hope someday I can be as good as you :) I'm definitely starting to practice, and its rrreeally fun!
I did my nails the other night- here is a pic I just took at work today. I am obsessed with French tips right now ;)

I love French tips too if my nails aren't red or pink.
I've fallen in love with nail art.
The other week I did a ying yang pattern which didn't turn out too bad for a first go, and the week before a dice pattern. Have tried a few other designs over the last few months too.
Am going to get some Gelish - a brand of gel polish with a LED curing light soon, and get into gels.
Brought a stamping set a few months back, but just can't get it to work :(
I looooove OPI and Revlon. Rimmel is great too.
Right now I have on OPI liquid sand. Matte finish purple with shiny bits. Soooo cool. Almost like shiny sandpaper!
Steph - did you use striping tape in some of your designs?
Did a gradient drag this afternoon.
One layer at a time, using a fan brush.
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi89.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk207%2FfluffOball%2FNail%2520art%2520gallery%2FGradientdragging_sm_zps45c163e0.jpg&hash=3a0d9a35e5e470417d7f135c62862a962613f7a1)
Taking a photo of one hand with your other hand is no mean feat! Especially with an SLR ;D

Very cute!!!
I had gels but they wrecked my nails. I've gone back to acrylics as my real nails were taking forever to recover.
Acrylics may not be good but at least my nails look reasonable, I hated the non-polished look.
I just have to be careful not to take my eyes out when putting contacts in and out.
Hints gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Never tried acrylics. Well, pre transition I did. Never since. Hated the feel.
How did gels wreck your nails? Were they real gels?
Gels are the ones that were cured on with UV? As they grew out the nail underneath was so weak that I could feel the nail bed underneath, I was frightened I would have no nails.
After a while I went to acrylics to cover the nail and give some support.
Yikes!!
Yes, they are cured with UV or LED lights.
Sounds like they weren't prepared properly. No base coat??
My toenails were all white and weak when I took the polish off a few weeks back. Had to leave polish off. But I'm sure that's because the polish was on too long. About 3 weeks. Possibly I didn't let them dry enough before putting on a base coat. They seem to be recovering now luckily.
No base they went in with a gel and then polish layers and then bake under UV..
It was my first time and I'm never going back there. The place I'm going now seem to have a totally different attitude.
I was really nervous that I'd damaged my nails - well I think I did!
In retrospect the place seemed to be a mass nail doing place with little care for the client. Just fast turn over.
yeah, they sound pretty dodgy.
A lot of those big nail places are. Better to avoid them. They are after volume. It's all slave labor too.
It's more fun to do them yourself anyway :D
Very true on all comments. I felt very sorry for the girls, it seemed like slave labour and a male boss among just female staff, all of the same ethnic background.
But I'm a high maintenance woman, - and love it!!!!
Hugs Sis

I've laid off nail polish for a while,my nails are wrecked they split like wood in layers. One of my favourite colours is black cherry.
So.... I tried painting my nails for the first time yesterday.
Or, should I say, nail.
I got one done and realized that my nails have this... I don't know what to call it... wood bark texture to it that become very prominent after the polish went on. I was immediately disgusted and took the polish off. Other than getting a nail file to help sand it down, is there anything I can do to keep that from happening?
Thanks for the compliments :-)
I am so happy that people are into nails top and I like seeing your nails. Nice french tips jenny! :-)
And liking the gradients too Ausbelle! This forum needs a like button! Mods pretty please! =^_^=
You shouldn't see the texture of the nail coming thru. I would try a thicker coat or different brand?
Steph :-)

I agree, a like reply button would be nice. Enjoying everyone's pictures. I will try & take a few pics & post them if I can.

Sounds to me like her nails need some work buffing and polishing, my nails get a rough surface when I do outdoor projects, concrete was especially bad when i constructed some steps from my patio. Those tools are available in the nail polish section of any chain pharmacy.

That's just it. I lead a pretty sessile life. I don't own a house so I don't do any kind of yard work. It's just that my nails have these really deep, close set grooves to them that make them really rough. Now, I do admit, I'm a total novice to painting my nails, and this was the first time I attempted it at all. I was just doing it on a whim to see how it would look.

Yep, Shantel is right. As well as buffing you will want to get some moisturiser, cuticle oils and nutrients into your nails.

Nice! :-) How did you do the split? Using sticky tape?
There are some pretty good effects that you can get by dropping paint into water and then submerging your nails through it. I will have to post a video. I was going to give that a try :-)
Steph :-)

Steph, I posted my hands/nails on my profile, they need to be much longer but as we all know it takes time. I should were rubber gloves when doing the work/dishes & use more moisturizer like I did in my early girl years, too many wrinkles, getting older I guess.

No tape. Just used the brush. It works really well actually. Did the dots using a dotting tool.
I love the way water marbling looks. It just looks a bit too much work though with all the taping and the fact you have to do each one separately :o
Okay. Here's my second first attempt. :-\

Nice but it's gone now! My nails are short atm but only because I have been painting them without treating them to moisturising and protecting enough.
I did some great felt effect nails today! Awsome! ^_^ will have to post a picture in a bit ^_^
Me an my SO are painting each others toenails and giving each other pedicures on a pretty regular basis. I just gave her a bunch of new polishes in her Easter basket :D
I'm not out or FT or anything, so I can't really do my fingers, but I probably will next weekend for fun.
Tiffany, your look could fool me at full time. I decided I no longer care what people think.I got a nicr purple glaze on right now. But they chipped from scrubbing my stove the other day. Must repaint and post pics. I am surr that my mother in law would love to do nails with me when I see her again. She is always pushing me to do more and more girly stuff. Anyone got an opinion on the magnetic nail polish stuff? The ones that get those awesome swirls.

Yes! OMFG! YES! O.O Must have. Let me know how they work out and color me jelly.
Have any of you tried Duri Rejuvacote? I recently got into painting my nails, and they break like crazy so I can't really grow them long. I've heard Rejuvacote is good for strengthening weak nails but I don't want to bother if it doesn't work.

Best way to strengthen weak nails is 800 mg of Calcium Citrate per day because if you're on HRT calcium is being flushed out of your system every time you pee. Coffee and alcohol does it to you also. My nails get paper thin and even split vertically when I go without calcium supplements. If you are new on feminizing HRT it isn't going to show right away, I've been on it for 18 years and it had taken it's toll on my nails until I began to take the calcium supplements. Now my nails are back to a normal thickness and healthy. I will be getting a bone density test soon too because my once manly wrists are getting tiny and I've had two links removed from my watchband three times now.

I'm actually not on HRT (I'm a female-bodied androgyne), but I should probably be getting more calcium in my diet anyway. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes, regardless of birth gender it's always a good plan to stay on top of good health. I've been more interested in naturopathic ideas, they can take nail and hair samples and tell what vitamins and minerals are deficient.
Hard as nails type clear polish really works & it so easy. It dries hard & very stiff to help protect the natural nail.
Steph, thanks again for your topic. I'm letting mine grow out to normal. They can go another maybe 1/2 inch if I'm careful.
Have fun, Francis
Well my french tips are no more, after doing some work around the house I noticed my index finger nail had been broken :( first broken nail, oh no! It was bound to happen I guess ;)
Anyway here is a pic of my latest experimentation. Two coats of light pink/purple, and a clear gloss with glitter tapped into it, and then two more coats of gloss.
I didn't have any glittery nail polish to start with, but I did have a bottle of glitter so I decided to improvise :D

nail art pro over here!!!
Thanks :-) Not really ... at least not yet! I could change my career tho! lol
I am thinking a spring scene with blue sky grass and flowers for my next ones. Hopefully I will have time to do them tomorrow. :-)
So many types of nail painting!
I am usually too busy to wear manicure every weekend. I once tried French manicure, but it required too much skill for me.
In summer, I do paint my toenails to hide my worn-out toenails. I am a regular runner, and I always have at least one or two damaged toenails. I like simple blue or forest-green color, because it is very easy to paint.

Yes. Athlete's foot caused it in one toe, but now cured by anti-fungal drug. Exercise and sweat makes me prone to it.

Not fun, I shouldn't have brought it up but even though your toenails look pretty painted I recognized that you might be suffering from that occasional problem. My wife has to deal with it too and dig away at the sides where theytend to grow under the edges of her big toes. It can be painful! You have attractive feet and ankles for a tall gal, looking very pretty to me hon!

Shantel,
Opposite to our insight.
Doctor recommended not to dig away at sides. The toe shape should be flat to avoid ingrowth.Just cut from the middle, and leave the sides to keep the same length as the middle. Digging away the sides will aggravate the toe problem. Just apply anti-fungal medicine.
Fortunately I did not have any significant pain.

Oh thanks Barbie for the good info, I'll have to pass that on to the little woman!
There is a lot of information on ingrown toenails in Internet. For example, a brief one:

Are you talking the Gelish magneto polish? You apply then put a magnet over the top. Looks so cool. I'm getting some next weekend ;D

OK, so it's been 3 months, but I finally got a Gelish mini kit. This is my second attempt and I did a magnetic blue with Gelish Mini. Not too bad. Have had a lot of nice comments from people though.

I have a major dislike for nail art, so I limit myself to simple and clean. Plus I pretty much remove the polish at the end of the day since I still only go out as female a few times per week.
From Yesterday, all OPI:

Weird thumb position is weird. But I did not have time to make more shots...
I wish I had a pic, I'll have to take one next time I do it..
My last attempt were Ford blue with white stripes on the fingers and cobra's on the thumbs..
Feeling a bit rebellious today...

Totally regretting it. I really wanted to go out this OPI, but happened to require too high maintenance. Anything will damage it and the gloss disappears quickly without a top coat. On top of that, takes forever to dry (one coat!), and feels extremely heavy, so much that I removed it upon arriving home.
On the good side, every person that disliked black mail polish loved it.

OPI is generally the Cadillac of nail treatments, black wouldn't be my choice in colors. You have nice nails and very pretty feminine looking hands though!

O.P.I. Off with her red!
It should look more red, but my phone camera sucks. I though it was quite cool, but I don't feel very comfortable with it on my hands. And I don't like people to stare at my toenails (Now I know what it feels to be close to a foot fetishist). Removing it this night...
I love pinks reds purples French tip corals.

I need to keep an eye on this thread! I have part time nail obsession, somewhere between 200 and 300 nail polishes.. anything from glitters, rare polishes, konad, magnetics, other super weird special polishes.. yeah. Mostly OPI and China Glaze, with a couple of Chanels and others too.
Most of the time I keep them super super short and polish free though. But Akira and her manicures makes me squeeeee! LOVE LOVE the monsters!
Purple glitter gradient nails! Only way they could have been better would have been if they were pink instead
This is my Halloween nail! I'm more into subtlety, so rather than do candy corn etc..., I took inspiration from Halloween. Its black, with a purple/bronze iridescence, which reminds me of beetle wings and blackbirds.

Thanks :) I'm growing them a couple mm longer, back to where they were before I had a bit of a meltdown and bit them.

Did it on Wednesday night, base + two layers + top coat, already chipping on the usual suspects. Well, that's what you get for doing manual labor and handwashing dishes, but my policy is to keep it for at least one week.

I usually get a week out of a polish, unless I forget to put gloves on when doing a manicure and taking off the client's polish. Then usually it's all over at that point.
Amazing!

OK, so I haven't been back in a bit, so here are some of my more recent ones....
Wow!
You seem to be addicted to nail painting.
Anyway, enjoy it.
barbie~~
Thanks ^_^ yes I am quite addicted! The cookie monster ones were done with a soft felt finish :-) I thought after, that I should have accented the ring and thumb with a cookie design, so I may do them again but better. I love nail art! :-)
I have the stars and stripes on atm. I am a UK girl but I love the stars and stripes :-)
I just did these... What what!

My cellphone camera gets worse every day it passes... O.P.I. Amazon, Amazoff from the Spring collection. Color changes a lot based on light, but... Not really my style. I wanted to try it in order to combine with some clothes, but I don't like it. In fact, I'm only taking the photo because I will remove it this evening.

Yes you do have lovely feminine hands! My spouse is wearing that same OPI color at this moment.

Actually, it's just the blur... They feel like leather, I have burns and a serious problem of drynes I can't nearly fight.
BTW: Worst nail polish ever. I haven't been able to fully remove it and my skin looks green right now. As if I was rotting or something. I will need to purchase a remover with acetone, because this is looking awful right now.

If she knows how to successfully remove it, please let me know. Argh.

Use an acetone remover. When applying nail polish she uses chip skip as a first coat, then base coat, two coats of OPI using a hand held hair dryer on very light cool air, then super top coat and quick dry last after everything is dry. She always looks great! Personally I think it's too much work for my own interests, but for the real girly-girl it's the ultimate way to go. The chip skip keeps it from chipping on the leading edges, she's an OPI fan, it is reputed to be the very best on the market.

Some polish just soaks into the nail. It is very hard to remove. Use some clear base coat, anything clear will do. I hope you did not do your toes? For me it's terrible to remove toe nail polish if it soaks in. Good luck, it will come off maybe, just soak the nail with remover & go slow.
