Today the USA Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of prop 8 from CA. The entire oral arguments are available and I listened to the whole thing. I fully believe this is going to result in a landmark decision and it is an exciting time for the entire United States. Tomorrow they hear arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act. We should have a ruling by June.
I hear this is also probably going to have an effect on other countries who are debating same-sex marriages as well. I hope the justices make something that we can all be proud of.
I doubt that they will do anything, but kick Prop 8 back down to the court of appeals in CA.
I find it weird/interesting how much different Canada and the US are on the subject of equality
yet they're right next to each other and basically besties.
Here, same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 2005. It's not even a debatable subject.
And a couple weeks ago on tv an ad campaign as launched to stop homophobia. Really good one too.
Time to catch up America!
Letting the US 9th Circuit Court Of Appeals decision stand would allow for marriage of same sex people in CA, since that was its decision. It would not do anything for other states who do not recognize same sex marriage however.
What we need in the U.S. is to get away from the political binary system that we have here that leaves no room for compromise in this day and age. A multi party system where you have to do more compromise and cooperation to get your share of the pie would help things immensly in my view.
