It annoyed me that I had to pick "male" or "female" as a displayed gender on Facebook. But I just found a way to change your gender to neutral, so that when you're referred to in the third person, the pronoun is "they". Just a nice option for people who prefer gender-neutral pronouns.
Here's the site that explains how to do it:

I did it!!! This is so cool! I had to have my SO check from another computer to make sure it wasn't just the Greasemonkey changing it in my browser, and it's not... I'm a they now on Facebook!

Glad you also found it useful! :)
oh, i changed the language settings to japanese, it doesn't really mark gender at all. didn't realize that the english could be problematic.
sites with only two genders to choose from are a little annoying. on some it is possible to just not tell, but i've seen one where there were some really odd genders like emomale or femaleneko. i wish there were something a little more neutral like tentacle monster or something, but it's a good start.

"Tentacle monster"...definitely gender neutral...with a dash of kinky sauce lol.
All my friends..."what's a tentacle monster?"
Me... O.o
I might have to remove some "friends" and switch to gender neutral...
Excellent information, thanks Brainiac

I couldn't get this to work on Chrome.
I just realized that I am already gender-neutral on facebook. I guess I never picked a gender back when I joined facebook 7 or 8 years ago...it's been 'they' or 'their' all this time ;D
My gender has always been set as neutral (well except for one time where I thought I could get away with having it set as female and private, but the pronouns still went female in public view, so I changed that back to neutral really quickly). I don't know why it requires you to set it now. ???

Hm, that's weird. I use Chrome and it worked for me...

I'd bet dollars to donuts it has to do with advertising, so they can better find out their demographic and throw the "gender proper" ads at us. =3=
Thank you for this, I've been trying to find a way to do this for a while. Ever since my sister "hacked" my profile to make me Nicolas Cage I've been listed as male and was always on the fence about whether to change it back or not. This solves the problem quite nicely.
