Just a fun poll to see what we like to drink :icon_drunk:
water on the rocks for me, in fact make it a double!
beth
None.
But if you must drink, make it wine, and only take a sip.
Normallly I don't drink but when I did I liked wine.
No alcohol for me, but if I can have some, make that whisky on rocks with minaral waetr, and only a few glasses.
i hate beers, etc. i do quite like shots of things though (like spirits, etc). i don't drink much.
I am somewhat paradoxical regarding alcohol.
- I like the flavor of mixed drinks (fuzzy navels and 7highs in particular)
- I am also quite fond of sangria.
- I tend to like dark beers as well, at least somewhat.
Not all brands of the above though, few actually.
But ironically I do NOT like what effect alcohol has on the body. Well, makes a decent old time style cold medicine (aka hot toddy), so I find it kind of amusing that while I kind of like the stuff I hardly ever touch it. Probably just as well, I don't seem to be smart enough to know when to stop.
Knowing when to stop is the important part.
I like either wine or a micro-brew beer with dinner. A nice wine can really enhance a fine meal.

Amen! I don't drink much but when I do I have one rule. I do not drive a car even if I had one drink. Me and a drunk tank wouldn't get along and police have way too much leeway in deciding if someone is drunk or not.
I prefer wine.
well i'm not really too careful of how much i drink when i get drunk. i basically think of it more of how it actually is than of what laws give the impression of it as... that when i decide to begin to get drunk... i am voluntarily deciding to use hard drugs - worse than lots of the illegal ones, in fact. this is a reckless course of action from the get-go, with no purpose other than pleasure. so if i decide to do that, then that is what i decide to do - and i do it toward its purpose, which is having a good time.
i think there's a sizeable gap between having too much alchohol to drink and having enough alchohol to drink to cause you to have a bad time. on the rare occasion i would be drinking, i'd stop somewhere beyond the former and before the latter. which isn't good. but then, neither is drinking alchohol in the first place.
i personally see no justification whatsoever for having alchohol and tobacco on a different legal status to any of the other recreational drugs. whatever argument you use to keep either of them legal, can be used to make any of the others legal. and whatever argument you use to keep any of the others illegal, can be used to make any of the legal pair illegal. if the issue of legality of recreational drugs is ever going to be resolved, i think it needs to start with at least some measure of consistency. before then, the "we're all adults, we can look after ourselves" and the "you'd be taking away our basic freedoms" will just keep butting heads with the "so many irresponsible people on these things causing havoc" and the "keep our children safe"... to no end. which i think is a shame. jmo.

So very true!
Undoubtedly why I usually abstain ;)
Mind you if it actually stopped the pain I'd be an alcoholic.
But it doesn't. Doesn't help one little bit. Heck, for that matter it doesn't even dull the pain, I just care less, and that is no good.
*shrug* Alcohol is a good thing to either burn or chase the bugs away. ;)
I am better off not driinking because jack daniels, johnny walker, and Bud Wiser are Uncles who moved into my families home and only left after my mom, dad, and step dad passed away. My two brothers and one sister welcomed them into their homes to liive. One sister only invited Bud Wiser in occationally and the other sister kicked them all out. I never really let these uncles move in except for a two - three year period when my first marriage broke up and I was a lone. Aunt Wine was my most welcome guest whom I taked to every evening when I came home. They were all kicked out two years ago.
and also speaking of alchahol..... my tollorance has been shot. used to be able to handle 18 bourbon and cokes.. ie: get up and walk away without stumbling or sluring or any other drunken actions, no hang over either, but would usualy have 6 or so when hanging out with the band.
Now if I drink 6 bourbons Im drunk and likely to be hungover the next morning... so far the only problem my band has with my transitioning...
My old friend Jose Cuervo. No salt no lime no problem. My wife and I use to drink them all the time, but had to quite HRT and all. Too risky for the liver. Now it's just an occasional glass or two of wine.

When I was more of a drinker, I would tend toward mixed drinks (I was rather fond of Long Island iced teas). If I drank beer, it was generally of the darker, heavier varieties (stouts, porters, etc.). Though I didn't typically seek out wine, I didn't usually turn it down, either. I wasn't fond of shots in general, but a shot of Wild Turkey with a pint of beer was pretty satisfying. ;D

"but a shot of Wild Turkey with a pint of beer was pretty satisfying."
Wild Turkey, funny you should mention that. I never was really a drinker for my whole life and while I would drink beer on occassion, I never really liked it. that is until toward the end of the year when a Lesbian friend from work took me to her favorite girl dance bar. I had a ball and was drinking Sierra Nevada Porter and really getting into the scene, in fact aside from some months of recuperation from a medical problem, I got quite regular there, porter and all, but mostly just groving with the girls in a non male environment.
Anyway I found I liked the porter and began drinking on an almost regular basis, then found it to be to expensive and i lost my taste for it and began drinking the common domestic beers which I actually hated before and since have become quite the beer drinker.
Wild Turkey though, back in the 70's, when it was rare to see me drink anything with alcohol, I used to hang out at a little pool bar that was owned by the mother of a friend of mine. because of the ribbing I took over being basically a non drinker, (the old cop joke, about all cops being either insane, alcoholic or queer, .... want a beer?) I took to stopping off at a dairy queen on the way to the bar, ordering a strawberry milkshake and taking it with me. I would then order a double shot of Wild Turkey, mix it into the milkshake and spend my time there sipping it down. The ribbing stopped, but I got some strange looks, let me tell you. Guess they werent used to seeing a double shot sipped down with a straw. Yeah, thats it! .....
Terri
Wild Turkey and Strawberry Milkshake? And I thought I had some unusual tastes. Sounds like an Irish version of Strawberry Daquri. I don't think I've seen that in any of the bar books. Maybe you should submit it to whatever the organization is that publishes bar books. I think there's a $100,000 reward for new drinks.
You could call it Turkey in the Strawberry. ;D

I put that I don't like alcohol, but that isn't quite correct.
I was raised by parents who went to the Moose Club every night, 7 nights a week, I spent many a night there too. They drank every day and night. They did not consider themselves to be alcoholics, but by todays standards they probably were.
I drink from the age of 14 to 30 (I do consider that I was an alcoholic). One night I found myself waiting for my kids to go to bed (so I could drink hard liqour) for some reason I only drank beer while they were awake. That shocked me into quiting immediately. That very night I went through the house and emptied every bottle of vodka and bourbon that I had (also all beer). I have never had a drink since.

I'm not a drinker. No real reason why, just never liked the taste.

I understand. I can't stand strong drinks.

i chose "i don't like alcohol" which isn't entirely true. i kind of liked it too much. i tried to do the everything in moderation technique which didn't quite work for me.
yes, knowing when to stop is important unfortunately some people just can't.
i never really discuss sobriety b/c it's not something one goes around announcing (other than in meetings).

that's how it is/was for me. inhibitions are significantly lowered and suddenly it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to do that and drive home.
but i still feel compelled to answer the question. when i did drink it was jager bombs (jagermeister and red bull) or good ol' Jack Daniels.
go big or go home eh?
-tino-
I used to like Jager when I was dope sick.
Alcohol lies in the category as hard drugs for me as well. Not because I had any problem with it, or the 'alcoholic gene' or whatever. Didn't do much for me usually, didn't ever need a drink as an alchy might, but I know what it is.
This is not any different than a thread on "what recreational drugs do you like?".
It really isn't.
"What dope do you guys like ta do? Do ya like crack or regular powdered coke?" etc.
get my meaning?
good point, just b/c one is legal doesn't make it any better or worse than the other.
I don't drink beer at all; I had a horrible experience as a child (long story) and haven't been able to stomach it since.
I rarely drink at all (probably a total of 8 drinks this year), but when I do I prefer Tanqueray & 7, with a splash of Roses' lime juice. And of course, being from South Texas, a shot of the cheapest Tequila I can find on my birthday!

Nah, I think Annie gets it across well enough... ;)
I answered that I like mixed drinks, but I rarely drink. Used to not be the case. Was quite the party girl in a younger life. My favorite was Long Island Iced Teas, but those would knock me on my butt today. An occassional margarita with a Mexican meal is good.
Side note...I can honestly say that even though I was a party girl, I did not ever drive drunk!
;D Pam
Despite my dad's best efforts at making me an alcoholic ("allowed" me to sip his beer and whiskey at around 5 years old+, "awl, isn't that cute?"), I don't particularly care for the stuff. Similar to Kimberly, I don't mind the taste of some of it - beer is OK, and some wines - but I don't like the FEELING from it. I'm too messed up already to be playing with my brain functions, lol. The idea of being "out of control" or lowering my inhibitions is terrifying to me. Heck, it might even be TS-related, as I've always monitored myself for fear My Big Secret might be showing... that some slip up, some mannerism, some gesture might it give it away. The LAST thing I'd want to do is lower my inhibitions and "be myself."
So I'll drink the toasts at weddings, and have maybe have a glass of wine after dinner once every 6 six months... but that's it.
I never like the tastes of any of the stuff so I don't. :icon_blah:
;D

One time about 7 or 8 years ago, I got smashed on a fifth or whiskey. Never did that again. In fact, I can't even drink too much or I start feeling nautious. Strong drinks by themselves will do that to me too. I have a bottle of Maker's Mark that I haven't been able to drink much of because it's so strong. Fortunately, mixing with coke really helps dillute a bunch of different alcohol.
Melissa
An occasional beer (after all, I'm of German descent, it's almost mandatory!), red wine or shot of bourbon in my cola is what I like. I love cooking with alcoholic liquids, especially in glazes and marinades.
I feel that I have to watch myself, though, I tend to like it too much and will think, the day after, "That felt good yesterday, maybe I'll have another one . . ." I think that's the road down that slippery slope so I usually say no to that thought.
helen
Let's talk about hangovers:
Fortunately I haven't had a hangover in a very long time. I've drank too much alcohol before, but I know that if I drink lots of water after that and eat some deep fried foods, that can really help. Deep fried food slows down the absorbtion of alcohol and water helps with dehydration. I've also heard tomato juice helps a lot. I learned a lot of this in bartending school.
Melissa
Melissa, I've heard the very same thing. Alcohol dehydrates you, so the water helps, also the thing about deep fried foods too. The tomato juice thing is why so many people who drank the night before drink bloody marys the next morning. I love tomato juice, but just plain. I think bloody marys are disgusting!
I haven't had too many hangovers in my time, but the one doosey that I did have, it was from getting smashed on screwdrivers. That was 20 years ago and I still kind of cringe at the smell of orange juice. The other bad hangover I had was when I drank 18 of those Mike's hard lemonades. Yuck!! I've also heard that hangovers are also dependent upon how sweet the mixer is.
:icon_zombie:
Pam
18 Hard lemonades? Ouch! Just try to avoid wine hangovers. I hear they are the worst.
Melissa
Darn right Melissa. I had a two day hangover after a friend's wedding, where the red wine flowed endlessly. The first day was characterized by crawling from bed to the bathroom with a garbage can in my hand in case I wasn't crawling fast enough. By the afternoon, my garbage can and I were crawling to the kitchen to try and stuff down some plain bread to absorb the acid in my stomach.
I couldn't stand up without feeling like my head was going to explode until day two.
That was about 20 years ago and while I will have the occasional glass of red wine, I will never overdo it again.

Now this is a nice reversal... Now the only porblem Im having with the band about transitioning is being the designated driver... its soooooo boring to sit there and watch them get drunk and talk about the same things.... sadly I used to be right there with them.... its so STUPID! *shakes her head* Atleast there not mean drunks and they are gaurentied to get home safe.

When I do drink it's usually hard stuff, but I really don't drink that much anymore.
I also like to mix my own drinks(I like to experiment), though I doubt any bartender would know how to make the majority of the unique stuff I mix.
I've actually been mixing drinks(though it was only soda and juices when I young) since I was really young, like a form of self expression. I couldn't resist mixing in restaurants that let you fill your own drinks. I got a lot of strange looks but I didn't care. If things were different I probably would've made a good bartender.
I don't think I could ever touch another beer as long I live, given my past near death experience with it. Just the thought of drinking it makes me feel ill.
Um, all of the options, and none?
Beer is good. I'm slightly partial to the Czech and German darker varieties, or British real ale. In American terms, most microbreweries are on the right track. The big commercial light beers (with a receipe of roughly 1/5 beer, 3/4 tonic water, and a splash of bourbon) are out.
Mixed drinks are not really my thing, although if socially necessary I can survive.
Wine is good if it's good. If it's sufficiently bad I'm quite happy to pass.
There are some kinds of strong alcohol that are quite enjoyable, especially single malt whiskies from the islands off Scotland.
I don't think I'm that much of a snob, it's just that for me the main point in drinking alcohol is not getting drunk (even though it can sometimes be the end result). Which, I suppose, is not really the norm, especially for someone who had the misfortune of being born with male genitalia. ;)
Nfr
I prefer wine. Every once in a while I might drink an ale or some brandy.
zythyra
Spirit drinker mostly.
G&T, Moscow Mules, Martinis, Bloody Mary.
German beer/lager.
Not much of a fan of alcopops, sweet liqueurs/cocktails, or wine.
I don't drink a lot. But when I do I want quality, not paint stripper.
theres no option for beer?
I normally only drink water, coffee, and tea. In the last year I only had alcohol once, on Christmas, and that was white wine.

I dont like Alchahol
Mixed drinks, the stronger and sweeter the better. My favourites are White Russian, rum and coke, and coke mixed with vanilla vodka.
But I also really like wine (again sweet and strong, but I like red, white and rose alike), cider and shots. Whether the alcohol is high or low quality I never quite noticed much difference in, but aged wine is quite nice.
I'm not particularly fond of beer, but some brands are rather okay. My beer loving parents sometimes make me enjoy a glass for dinner when I visit them. Same with whiskey and rum, that just some types are okay. I don't like bitterness in tastes, and absolutely can't stand sour/lemon/orange tastes. Yeah I do drink coffee and tea as well, but perhaps not surprisingly with lots of sugar in it.
I like the kind of drinks that can sneak up on you and get you in trouble because you can't tell from taste that they are alcoholic in nature. I also like a good beer and hard cider.
Don't usually drink though.
I drink tea 95% of the time. Got to keep up the British stereotype! ;) Used to be black decaf tea with milk, but Spearmint now for obvious reasons!
Have not had any alcohol for 27 years. Can't stand the stuff, the taste or the effect. Yuk!
There's only one drink I won't drink again and that's Absinthe.
Let's just say there was an "incident" last time I did, and it ended with a fight and me in a bath with someone pouring a bucket of cold water over my head.
Me and the Green Fairy don't see each other any more.
I drink sparkling water. I drank too much for to long to suppress how I felt and who I am.
No beer on the list, clearly not from the pcnw..
I do not like drinking Alcohol, beer or whatever at all. The only time I had some was when my dad forced me to drink a cup on my 21st birthday. It is a memory I'd like to forget honestly.
I can't pick one! It depends so much on the mood. Sometimes I want a glass of white wines, other times I want some gin tonic or a beer.
Drink hot water at home.
But drink coffee outside.
Beer always used to be my drink of choice, never wine unless I was at a winery and never mixed drinks. A year ago though I stopped drinking every night and the few times I did drink it was usually wine. So far this year I've had 2 drinks, one a margarita and one a mixed drink. I bought a 6 pack of beer last week but I haven't drank any yet. It's an Orange flavored beer and it looked good so I decided to buy it and drink some when I move into my new apartment, it'll be a celebration beer! The last time I bought a 6 pack was last May I believe!
Me and alcohol do not go well together. Last time I really drank was with my mom at dinner last November. We shared a bottle of wine, but I think she had a little more than me lol. After that I would just have maybe half a cup of sangria, a beer, or very little of something with alcohol.
There's something I miss about drinking that I can't put my fingers on. But I also take hrt seriously and would rather not mess up my liver.

I have never, even in college, had a taste or a desire for alcoholic beverages perhaps except for a glass of wine at a restaurant on a special dinner night.
Before I graduated from high school I saw how excessive alcohol consumption destroyed relationships, destroyed employment, and destroyed bodies.
In the large company I was in before I moved to Alaska about a year and a half ago, I was the manager of the accounting dept and I would frequently have business lunches and dinners with suppliers, associates and co-workers. If we ended up in a bar before or after a meal to socialize most everyone in our group would order a drink or 2 or 3 and I would just have juice or a soft drink... I many times got razzed about it but my reply was usually that "when I am sober I can keep up with everyone else even though they are half-drunk" ....... the bottom line is that I saw way too many destroyed lives because of excessive alcoholic consumption. Everything in moderation of course, but I don't even want to get started down that path... for me the same thing goes for smoking.
I am not trying to be a goody-two-shoes as some have told me that I am, these things are just my choices for me and my body.
When my nephew was released from active duty in the Marines, he started going to school and all I would hear was how tough it was for him to go to school. Finally, I had enough and told him that "when I went to School (No snow both ways)", I went to school full time, worked full time, and got drunk full time. Which I actually did. Had soooo much energy back then.
And while on active duty, I was drinking when I wasn't on duty. I look at some of the pictures I have that I was being awarded something or other and I can see I was so totally hungover.
It became worse when I returned to the US because our fellow citizens were offering us welcome home gestures by spitting on us and it wasn't cool to be in the service.
I hadn't been drinking at all for a few years and recently I bought that one Fosters and some Kona Beer which I've been slowly drinking one every other day with lots of salt.
Kind of messed up. But it's how I handled my issues back then by covering them up.
I voted for Wine, but I could have also voted for shots and mixed drinks. I drink Wine at more enough with dinner and shots and mixed drinks are when I go out to a party.
First got drunk at 13, I was a beer monster til 35 then my tolerance declined sharply(60 now). Had spells on & off of not drinking then having a bender then stopping for weeks. My parents were alcoholics, it killed Dad with a massive stroke, I had to sign off DNR. Currently having a glass or 2 of wine with a meal if dining out, the odd beer or cider & a bourbon on the rocks. Not been drunk for months, never drove my car or rode my bike drunk & only once had a fight drunk.
I didn't do the poll because my choice of an answer is not there. I like drinking. Beer is my drink of choice, however, it is also my nemesis. After drinking irresponsibly for far too many years I had to admit that I was an alcoholic and stop. That was over 19 years ago and I've not had a drink since. I am better for it.
Hugs,
Laurie

First got drunk at 13,
My first time was age 14. It was New Year's Eve at home and I finished off a big part of a bottle of vodka. All night long I was either bent over the toilet puking or crawling on the floor back to my bed. Walking was not an option. I was still so sick the next day that I barely ate anything. My parents never said anything but they must have known something was up. Anyway, it was months before I could even smell alcohol again without feeling nauseous.
