Lo Wei

A transgender person awaiting surgery to become a woman has complained to the equality watchdog about a nurse who insisted on loudly calling her "Mr".

Angel, who dresses and regards herself as a woman, says the nurse's loud use of the male honorific had drawn attention to her gender identity disorder and made her feel humiliated.

The transgender-rights advocate in her 20s went last Friday to the psychiatric unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital, where her disorder was diagnosed in 2010.

To me, the way that this article addresses transgender people is humiliating and offensive...lol

They so just had to keep repeating the word "disorder"...just wow lol

"regards herself as a woman" is just provocative journalism. Feh.

Uh... this is from South China Morning Post, an English-language Hong Kong publication. The style of English and the way they address transgender/transsexual folks is going to be somewhat different to Western papers.

I'd say that given they address her as "she" throughout despite her having a male birth certificate, and that it is tagged as "Equal Rights," the paper is pretty strongly on the pro-LGBT side of things given the context. And a quick survey of prior articles supports this.

I forgot about that...thanks for pointing that out :)

From what I can tell from the nurses attitude and the way the paper is phrased...China has a long way to go till being transgender is viewed as it is in North America...

At least someone is acknowledging that what happened to her was wrong...so that's a step in the right direction.
