Title: Stressed about life, quiting job, and moving to new job.
Post by: Kendall on May 30, 2007, 09:39:26 PM
The last few weeks have been a struggle. After getting and feeling really low, sometimes stressed out, confused, and much negativity recently, I finally decided to look for another job. I wanted to get out on my own terms before situations lead to me quiting without notice or a job lined up, or getting fired. So I looked at the closest place right across the road. After an anxious 2 weeks of Interviews, I was able to pick up a job with better wages, and hopefully better benefits.

Now its been really hard trying to leave the current job in a decent manner, I keep getting comments like "you'll hate it there" and "you'll be back", as if I am making the wrong decision. So thats got me a little confused. But one thing I know is that after 4 years, I really want to be out of there since the management has really changed for the worst the last month to 2 months to something I really hate.

Also we got the house torn up trying to finally get around to constructing the deck that a tree fell on during Katrina. She has her son over now and the house is crowded. Also some of the rooms are being painted.

Not a lot of relaxing time atm.

Hang in there, K.  Things tend to sort themselves out whether we worry about them or not.

It sounds like you have made a very adult decision to seek employment elsewhere before quitting your current job.  It's not always easy to leave a place you have worked at for several years, even if the working conditions have become intolerable.  It also doesn't help when your co-workers make comments like that.

On the bright side...better pay is always good thing!  It also might be true that your co-workers are jealous that you found a better job...one can never tell about co-workers.   ???

Will you be doing the same type work at the new job, or will you making a career change at the same time?  Either can be stressful, but learning new things helps take your mind off the stress (even if it is just learning how the new company does the same things you've been doing for years).

It sounds like you made your decision several weeks ago, that leaving was what was best for you, and that is what prompted your job search.  People spend a significant portion of their lives on the job, so it only makes sense that they should try to be as happy there as possible.  When working conditions become such that one dreads going to work (more so than normal), it's time to change either the job or one's attitude about it.

Regarding the comments from your co-workers, who knows?  That is part of the stress, and part of the excitement, of changing to a new job.  We do our best to get a feel for how a place of business operates and what the staff is like during the interviews, but in the end, we go with what our "gut" tells us...it's really all we have.

Now...let's talk about this crazy decision to rebuild the deck, paint several rooms, have her son living with you, AND change jobs all at the same time.  ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR F'ING MIND?  Just kidding, as I'm sure you didn't plan for all this to happen at once.  If you did, see the previous comment and seek professional counselling. :o  Maybe you could diet and quit smoking along with everything else just to add a little more strain (not that either applies to you, but it seemed like the appropriate smart-aleck comment).

In any case, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi K,

Good for you. Too many people stay where they are miserable due to fear of change. I should know. I am one of them (working on it).

Your coworkers sound like dinks. I hate it when people show that "you'll be back" attitude. They should be happy for you and encouraging.

Stay busy, but don't let yourself be overwhelmed.

Peace,

Rebecca

Hey Kendra, I think your heart is telling you something if you are already lining your next job up. I like to think that without change, we're pretty much stuck in the same place. You are going through stress, but self-admittedly you are not happy at your job. Why not try it out, do something new and maybe it will give you a different perspective on things? You already know you are miserable at your current job and you KNOW the people you work with are an important part of working somewhere. Take control, leave the nay-sayers behind and carve out Ken/Kendra's path at work :)  Good Luck! Meghan

Thanks all, quit 3 days ago. With that last day came a great deal of relief from the pressures that were there. Of course now after my day of orientation and now first day of on the job, we will see how it goes. I am making as much as I was making back when I quit my prior job. If all goes well, I will feel good finally making it back to what I was once making. I had taken a huge drop down to almost nothing 4 years ago.

Thanks for all the words. I thought about them and it helped me get through the hardest part, the 2 weeks.
