Title: Hysterectomy/oopherectomy concerns
Post by: burnallthemaps on April 28, 2013, 02:55:57 PM
Hi, guys! New poster here, hoping to hear about others' experiences with hysto/oopho surgery and recovery.

I'm a 26yo trans person, have been on testosterone for 2.5 years, and have been uninsured and way too broke to even conceptualize surgical options for most of my transition. I recently moved to San Francisco, though, and since they lifted restrictions on surgeries covered by Healthy SF, I have the option of getting my hysterectomy and oopherectomy covered.  :o I expected it to be a lengthy planning process but my doc just referred me to the hospital and said it could take anywhere from two weeks to six months to have my consult and schedule surgery. Either way, not much time at all!

I've been reading every study and story I can find about trans patients in particular, but there just isn't much out there that addresses some of my concerns, so I wanted to check here. I'm really curious as to how surgery will affect my sexual options and sensation, and would love to hear how these operations have impacted people's experience in that arena. (I know it's personal, I'm just terrified to sign on for this surgery without any opinions or information about how it might change my sexual experience.) I really enjoy penetrative sex, although I've cut way down on it since starting T, and am shaky at the thought of compromising my ability/enjoyment when it comes to that. I also wonder if it impairs/inhibits G-spot stimulation. Because this isn't something everyone wants to discuss publicly, I'm open to e-mailing/PMing/arranging to chat about this elsewhere.

Mostly, I'm just overwhelmed by the lack of relevant information I'm turning up and really want to make informed decisions when it comes to surgery. I'll be able to ask about these matters at my consultation, I know, but doubt that my surgeon is going to be a post-op FTM (although that would be rad as hell) and would appreciate as much information as I can get as I start planning and preparing for my first trans surgery. You guys are fantastic - thanks for sharing your experiences so candidly here!

I've had my hysto but I don't have penetrative sex sooo not sure if I can be much help.

As far as orgasm by stimulating my "member" it's the same as before (throbbing and everything).

Thanks for the response, both of you! I hope you keep us posted, Robert - must be exciting to have a date set! How did your consultation go?

And Simon, thanks, that's definitely helpful. The side effects of T, as well as the particulars of my current relationship, have already made penetrative sex WAY less frequent and significantly more frustrating anyway, so I know I can go without. It's just strange to think about giving up that capacity, more than anything - but then, I've chosen to take that risk with HRT, and will choose it again for top surgery, so I have to accept it as part of my process. Just would rather know as much as I can up-front so I'm not hit with a bunch of sad surprises post-op!

I have sorta had my consultation .... my doctor and I have been talking about it for month b/c orgasms have gotten increasingly more painful the higher the dosage of T that I am on.  We also can't get my ovaries to shut down .... I have been on depo provera for two years and T for 1.5 years so I should have gone through menopause by now but I still am getting a cycle and have had internal ultra sounds and I am still producing eggs and ovulating.  So, the main reason for my hysto is b/c of the painful orgasms - which she says is a common problem with ftm's and no one is sure what causes it but in her experience after the hysto I will be able to have orgasms without pain.

The thing that sux is she said I have to wait six weeks to have an orgasms to make sure my insides have healed.  I have another friend who had a hysto a couple years back - not trans medical reasons - and was told the same thing

Really? I had a complete hysto (with cervix removal/vaginal cuff) that was an open procedure (cut almost hip to hip). I started T four days after my op and was masturbating less than a week after that, lol. Didn't bother me or hinder my healing at all.

Ya, my doc said it can interfere with the healing process of the insides and pull on the stitches.  My friend only made it three weeks.

I am going a complete hysto but I getting the devience (robotic arm controlled by the doc) and will only have four small incisions on me-- which she said will not impact my top surgery and should heal nicely and not be very noticeable

Pre-T, when I was going through menopause and experiencing all sorts of weird symptoms (visual disturbances, dizziness when I stood up, extreme allergies), I did a lot of reading about "female" stuff, including hysto. I was naturally attracted to the idea of getting rid of the innards.

Some of the women claimed that after hysto, their orgasms were completely different, unsatisfying, less intense, stuff like that. I know that all of these parts are connected, so I have worried about having a less intense climax after hysto. My orgasms are much more intense after T, so I don't want to lose that.

I don't remember reading anything about the G-spot. I thought its existence was a myth, actually.

I don't know whether anyone has done any research papers on orgasms after hysto, but you might poke around and see what you can turn up. Do you have access to a university library?
