Title: Need ideas for charitable giving
Post by: Valerie on May 01, 2013, 05:38:31 AM
Hi, y'all,

I'm compiling a list of organizations to be included in my donation rotation, and would like one of them to an organization that focuses on transgender rights/advocacy.  I know there are lots of LGBT agencies out there, but because the 'T' is often overlooked, I want to put my monies to an agency specifically devoted to trans* rights, healthcare, and eliminating violence against trans-peoples.

Ideally, I'd hope for the organization I choose to be secular (probably won't be an issue), and transparent about the monies received and where it goes.

Any ideas?

I hope the mods don't get upset about this, but I will make a suggestion which would be top of my list.

One that comes to mind is K-Step, Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project http://k-step.org/about/index.html (http://k-step.org/about/index.html)

The National Center for Transgender Equality http://transequality.org/ (http://transequality.org/)

The Transgender Law and Policy Institute has a links to a bunch of organizations that may be promising  http://www.transgenderlaw.org/links.htm (http://www.transgenderlaw.org/links.htm)

Also, the human rights campaign does great work.  I know they are most known for fighting for lgb, but I have seen the work they've done for transgender people and it is promising.  Currently, they are working with progressive groups to try and pass anti-discrimination policies in the work place.  Though I understand that the focus is not geared towards the trans community as much as we would hope.

1) PFLAG in general, specifically the Baltimore, MD  group is fantastic with TG youth
2) Not sure of their funding, Whitman-Walker in DC is a fantastic TG resource for all ages. Medical, therapy, legal etc.. Everyone in my group who's gone to them can't say enough good things.
3) Same again for Callen-Lord in NYC from what I read
