Title: Pre HRT: Birthday tomorrow! Mileage for a 19 yr old?
Post by: Maribeth12 on May 11, 2013, 04:09:22 PM
Hello! My name is Maribeth and tomorrow I will be 19! yay!

Today I ran a 4:56 mile time!  :D

So I am making this post for two reasons.  I am pre hrt, I have no solid plans for HRT right now but I really, really want to at least start HRT this year, while I'm young and free!  So I was wondering about possible effects of HRT for a 19 year old.  I don't know how to post a picture but I am REALLY skinny with very muscular and toned legs (because running sub 5 miles takes a LOT of work [and murders fat in the night])  My shoulders are too broad but I don't know if they haven't finished expanding yet.

My second reason would be to see if anyone knows the effect of HRT on running (early on)
I posted a post pertaining to running on my introduction page but I am curious if different people are reading this forum board!

Oh yeah, totally forgot to say that I would be a MTF pre HRT person! :P

Love Maribeth!

To post pictures you need to set up an account at an image hosting site, they're free, quick, and easy to set up. I use photobucket, but there are lots of dfferent ones. You want the code that looks like this: (I added three asterisks to break the code up so it displays.)

Take out the asterisks, and presto!

Or, you can get a set of image tags by clicking the Mona Lisa icon above and inserting the file between them manually. Hope I made sense! Hugs, Devlyn

HRT will effect your ability to run at those type speeds! I used to be able to run a 6:00 min mile not anymore! Once your body stops being dominated by testosterone your energy level decreases rather quickly. I stopped being able to run 3 straight miles at about the month and a half point and its slowly getting worse and worse. I basically workout like the other women I see in the gym now.  Everything that seems easy now will become harder once your on E. And I haven't even got started on how sensitive developing breast are that make even a walking pace difficult to maintain some days. I hope I'm not scaring you this has just been my experience so far. Yours could be completely different and it might not effect your running as severely as it has mine.

True true...
The demuscularization and weakening is dramatic....
Mother nature made it easy for men to breed females...

I now have the strength of a 120 lb girl....the best suited exercise
For me now is yoga daily..
Like heather said the things you did with ease now take effort..
And you can't carry anything agaisnt your chest...it will umm hurt lol..

You will go into at least over a month of your body metabolizing
Your male muscle....that is deep muscle pains...

LOL you will see....

I've been on HRT for close to 3 months now. I've dropped from a muscular 67kg (alright not amazing for 5'7) down to 55.8kg. Under my arms have become flabby were my triceps have turned into fat and other areas of my body the muscles are taking on a slightly different shape, longer and lean.

Having said all that i've actually got stronger... When i was working out intensively i was curling 12.5-15kg bicep curls.  I hit the weights the other day and curled 15kg quite easily for 10 reps for a few sets. Thought i could go up to 17.5kg or even push 20kg. Maybe it's mind over matter? I was in a really messed up place, questioning transition and i guess that angst/frustration really solidified mind - muscle connection.

My form is also pretty good when i lift. I guess you never know

Don't worry about scaring me, I am totally up for a change with running ability, as long as I can maintain it on a casual basis as running is my main form of exercise.  I am finishing high school in a few days and going to college but I will not be running competitively.

I guess thats another topic I should look into... transitioning in college...
I really want to start this year and I am really apathetic to being ostracized for my transition because I have been ostracizing myself for sooo long that it will be a blessing to actually be "myself"

Also, most people pass only after their first year or after the majority of a year, right?? So I should be golden for freshman year by just being myself.

As always, I appreciate all the advice I can get because I am all about deliberating on what path I should take on life and having lots of insight is AMAZING!!!

Love Maribeth <3

Running is a FUN pass time but Being a Girl will stand to trump all pass times!!! Onwards to a better FUTURE

hey i'm 20, i've been on hrt for the better part of three years, so my experience, physiologically at least, shouldn't be too different.

here are some things about hrt:
— it takes time.  it took me six months before i saw appreciable changes.  it may take less time, it may take more time, because the thing about human bodies is that they are all different!
— your epiphyses have probably fused, which means that most of the skeletal changes to your body have completed (most of this happens by age 18 or 19), but again, everyone is different, and your particular bones may still be growing.  there are still minor changes that occur after epiphyseal fusing, which may or may not be appreciable from person to person.
— there are certain changes associated with the decreased muscle tone and oxygen-carrying capacity of an estrogen-predominated body.  however, some of the things that have been found to decrease mechanical output (especially in regards to running) in women have to do with musculoskeletal differences.  if you are mostly or wholly musculoskeletally mature, you may actually find that your running doesn't suffer dramatically.  you know how they talk about "runner's hips" in women?  male-assigned people usually-but-not-always have that by default.

transitioning in college (even though it was something i'd mostly finished by the time i arrived) is...weird and unpleasant, from the little i experienced, but i imagine it is MUCH better than doing so out of school and in a job.  it really is the sooner the better, so, pragmatically speaking, doing it now is the best time in your life to do it.
