Title: Speedos?
Post by: ty.to.the.man on May 11, 2013, 11:21:27 PM
so the summer is coming up and I was wondering what are your guys' thoughts on speedos?
Im starting to feel a little better about my body and i just recently got top surgery so i was thinking of getting one.
I know not many people (especially teens) wear them to the beach and stuff but i know people who do.
And in general do you think wearing speedos to the beach/pool is okay? or keep it to the swim team?
I'm interested to see peoples opinions, thanks!

Completely depends on your body.  Surfer shorts might be a more conservative choice.

Edit:  Saw this on Yahoo and thought about all you guys

Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable! Don't worry about what other people consider "cool" swimwear. If you wanna wear one, wear one.

As unpopular as they are, Speedos actually look great on a lot of guys. They will definitely make your bum look good! ;P

As another guy I can tell you banana hammocks are laughable in most situations.

I can understand for swim team but other than that it just looks like a guy is walking around in panties.

Edit: Ok, maybe that's a bit harsh. You should wear whatever makes you comfortable. Have you thought about packing in one though? It would be a must in one. It would be easy for sunbathing but any sort of activity could cause shifting.

Ok, this is a bug bear of mine... I really don't understand the strange conservatism of some people these days when it comes to swimming trunks. When and where I grew up everyone wore 'speedos'; there weren't any swimming shorts. It's only in recent years people have become so prudish. I just think it's pathetic. So, if you want to wear 'speedos', my opinion is you should wear them and tell anyone who comments about it to grow up.  :)

i bring this up because i was looking at the suits on tranzwear.net, im tired of super long swim trunks (which are basically the only thing sold anywhere). tranzwear sells speedos and other trunks for packing, im trying to decide between a speedo and these mid-thigh length swim trunks. the reason i was leaning toward the speedo is it's much cheaper lol

ive worn speedos before.. theyre fun. it's also cultural. Ive seen them more with french people and europeans than westerners. who cares? Wear what you want.

I would be too worried about my packer running off to play in the sand to wear them.  There's much less coverage, and they're tight, so there's much less of a chance of being able to get away with it if something went wrong in the packing department.

I think it very much depends on what the norms are for your area. In my area, a guy wouldn't be seen dead in speedos, but somewhere else there's plenty of guys in speedos. If you feel comfortable I say go for it. I doubt anyone would say anything anyway. Also, congrats on the top surgery man, it looks great.

I just remembered someone talking about packers holding water longer than skin, and that making it look like you'd pissed yourself because the wetness was coming through their trunks.  It might still show up with board shorts on, but they tend to be more patterned and would cover it up a bit more than speedos, which reveal pretty much everything (think back to the Olympics and all the teen girls going crazy because they could see the outline of Tom Daley's penis...)  I think it would depend on what your packer is made out of, I could imagine that silicone would be okay.  The size of your packer might be another thing to consider, cis guys don't generally have a 5" flaccid penis.

This is the video which briefly mentions this point, but they also talk more in general about swimming and being trans if anyone's interested.

A speedo isn't my kinda thing. The tight shorts or square cuts seem a bit better than briefs.

I liked the Dots Short Board swim trunks from that page. Nice if a guy is looking for something not knee length.

I don't pack while swimming (I don't pack at all). I understand if guys are doing it from a dysphoria standpoint but if someone is doing it just because they think other people will notice nothing is down there, don't. People don't stare at guy's crotches and it would only be noticeable if a guy is wearing tight jeans, a speedo, biking shorts, or something else tight. Not saying that is the reason you pack...just saying in case any guys here worry about a lack of bulge.

PERSONALLY I don't think speedos look good on any guy. For swim team, I don't mind them much, but I prefer those tight mid-thigh ones. But this is just my opinion, I know plenty of other guys disagree.

But, it's up to you. If you think that's what you want, then go for it. Looking at the description of the pocket on that one, I think it depends on whether you'd be comfortable packing in that or not. I'd be too worried about losing my dick, but I'm also pretty paranoid about that even when there's no way it will fall out.

I like the Dots short trunks too, but mostly because the guy's body is incredible and I haven't seen my husband in almost two weeks....

Might be a bit risky. I think shorts look fantastic, Just find yourself a nice pattern or theme and go for It! If you want a speedo, Wear a speedo :)

I don't swim, but I'm thinking of going to the local trans swimming sessions at some point. I personally would choose to wear longer swimming trunks because I'm generally quite body conscious and then if you throw in the trans stuff as well I just wouldn't feel comfortable in them. About speedos in general, I know quite a few cis guys who have worn them, including my dad, and it's all personal preference. I don't see why you shouldn't wear them, especially since you found ones specifically for packing.

I grew up in South America -from WWII-refuge parents- where only old and/or fat men wear trunks or shorts. I also been to European beaches were few shorts are worn.

But in America nothing spooks the girls faster than a dude in speedos...they go running away screaming "eeew!"  As far as most American men, nothing screams more than I am "gay" that a pair of speedos. Only in competition swimming you will see American men in speedos

So, why the difference? Well Dr. Peky's theory of the "Great Speedo Divide" can be summarized as follows:
"American men do not wear speedos in two accounts: 1) they think the speedo makes their junk look to small, and/or 2) they think the speedo make their asses look very fem, and therefore they are going to become: a) a target for the attention of gay men (Horror), and/or b) the ladies are going to be making fun about their tiny junk (more Horror),"AND
"American women will never allow their men in speedo (except for swimming competition) because: 1) the thought that their boyfriends/husbands looking more sexy that themselves in a bathing suite sends shivers down their spines, and 2) they have been socialize to believe that penises are gross"

So, for both American males and females the origin of this attitude comes from their "puritanical" ancestry, a culture in which sex is associated with shame and guilt. This attitude breed insecurity.. so there you have it

Other theories abound http://ask.metafilter.com/31942/Why-do-Europeans-wear-Speedos (http://ask.metafilter.com/31942/Why-do-Europeans-wear-Speedos)

I can't say I've ever met a straight American woman who actually LIKED men that thought penises are gross. In fact, the talk they talk would make a man blush.

I think speedos can look okay on someone who's really in shape. If you've got even a little bit of 'fluffy' I think they make you look fatter than you might actually be. I've seen very trim men wearing speedos and I thought it looked okay. I have never considered men wearing speedos as 'sexy'. I always found them incredibly attractive based on what their body and face looks like. They could be wearing a turban and a kilt for all I care.

What kind of packer are people using when they wear speedos? I'd think most stuff out there would be way too big. Right now I wear some shorter boardshorts but they create so much drag, they're more for the beach than swimming laps. I'd like to get something tighter but not packing would be VERY noticeable...

Rossiter, i'd use something around 4 or 4.5 inches (i think thats like the national average in the U.S.). and yeah thats why i was considering a speedo too, i would like to go to the gym just to do laps in the pool but most of the swim trunks ive found are way too baggy and long.

3.5 inches is the average length for a flaccid penis.

I got a pair of diesel trunks that are like speedo material but in a boy-short cut.  Trust me, no packer is going to move in those, yet they are so comfortable.  I have not worn them in public, but wear them in the yard if I am sunbathing.  If I lost another 15 pounds i'd wear them with the matching tank I bought (to hide my scars).

Wear what works for you and don't worry about anyone else.

I think if you have the confidence to wear one then go for it. It's just like a girl wearing a two piece bikini thong, revealing. But most men are used to that, not wearing much and walking around in underwear. If I had the body and top surgery I'd wear one. I told my friends a couple of years ago, if the day ever comes that I get a nice body and good top surgery results that they'd see me in a Speedo instead of trunks. And I'd shave my body hair to go with it lol. I don't care what others think. I'm not gay and I'm American, I see guys with Speedos all the time. If you feel good about yourself flaunt it! It's okay to wear what you want when you want to. And with regular Speedos you don't have to worry about losing your packer, they're tight and hold things in place. I actually wear a Speedo under my trunks for that reason. Plus they dry quicker than regular cotton underwear.
